Im not sure if this has been mentioned before. I sat through this tonight mesmerised, it was distressing, haunting, graphic and poignant. There is no presenter rambling on, just hundreds of bits of video taken on 9/11 and edited into one video.

The people of NY, especially the NYPD can all take a bow, the emergency services were braver than brave. This reminds me why we should never ever give up the fight against terrorism. I have stated clearly and often that I am against the use of torture to gain evidence, but this really made me challenge my views.

Arpig -> RE: 102 minutes that changed America (9/7/2009 4:36:07 PM)

Not available in my area....apparently its too inflammatory for my delicate Canadian sensibilities.

rulemylife -> RE: 102 minutes that changed America (9/7/2009 4:39:40 PM)

I would like to see it but apparently most of us can't.

Can I watch 4oD in another country? Rights agreements mean that our 4oD service is only available in the UK. Even if you are a citizen of the UK you cannot access the service from abroad.

Deleted (damn you guys are fast)

Yep, UK only.

Ive never said that. I said it was a terrorist attack, committed by terrorists.

sappatoti -> RE: 102 minutes that changed America (9/7/2009 5:02:32 PM)

Here's the link to the History Channel's web site for this film. They will be airing the film on 9/11 at 8PM Eastern Time here in the US.

The site also has an interactive map that shows the vantage point of all the video clips that make up this film. Click on any of the locations and you can view the entire clip submitted by the person who shot it.

luckydawg -> RE: 102 minutes that changed America (9/7/2009 5:28:33 PM)

Polite sub, that was in no way specifically directed at you.

There is a contigent of people who do insist that terrorism is simply crime. I disagree with them. Whether Terrorism is a millitary or a criminal problem has been, at least in the USA, a major political question.

pahunkboy -> RE: 102 minutes that changed America (9/7/2009 6:08:08 PM)

...as to 9-11.

I am less sad over the event, but more uptight over the implications of it all/.

C'man Politesub, you know you'd like to give a set of pliars a good twist if they were attached to the big nose of a terrorist!

I wouldn't. But then again I actually believe the stuff they taught us about the rule of law and other similar things.

Arpig, the terrorist groups aren't signataries of the Geneva Accords so they don't get any "protections" under them.
If they did then the Geneva Accords are faulty and we (The U.S.) need to get out of them.
It is the terrorists who are the ones who don't beleve in the rule of law and similar things."

And does sinking to their level help us or hurt us?

LanceHughes -> RE: 102 minutes that changed America (9/7/2009 7:30:44 PM)

Drifting, drifting...... please check-out the quilt which my sister made in the days following 911.  It is NOT patriotic, red-white-and-blue nor is it a fabric copy of  any picture - plenty of quilts were made duplicating the firemen against twisted columns, for example.

This is her own design.  Over three million hits, and it has traveled over 50,000 miles. (If I've got my numbers right.)

Be sure to click on center for more detail. Do so twice.

I'll wait......

Rule, "sinking to their level?" Is that a psychological question? The *objective* is to beat them! Twenty years or 100 years from now no-one's going to care how we did it, ya think?
To beat them you have to be "more brutal" than they are. If you're going to cut a guy to pieces what differance does it make what "religion" or "nationality" he is? At that moment in time "he" is on the losing team and will pay for it with his life.
There's no room for "social workers" in war.
You don't win wars by being "nice!"
It wouldn't make me "feel better" if we abided by some abstract "rules" before we killed a bunch of people but, it would make me "feel better" if I watched a bunch of savages being bulldozed into a common grave with pig guts while I'm eating a "Hungry Man" t.v. dinner or a big steak with the juice dripping down my chin, sippin' on a coke cola watching the News!
I don't want to "talk" to those pricks I want them all dead. If they want to have some fun with them first more power to them.
I don't want to know their names, whee they're from, I don't want to give them "lawyers", social workers, "humane conditions or anything else. D_E_A_D, that's how I want them!
They should have given those savages in GTMO Bibles wrapped up in Koran book covers just to fuck with them and taken pics of their sweet little faces when they realized what happened! I bet we'd have seen some Bible pages in the toilet, you think?

TheHeretic -> RE: 102 minutes that changed America (9/7/2009 9:31:55 PM)

Is there a reason you haven't posted the link as a link, Lance?  And that the same post seems to be getting the copy/paste routine in a least a couple of areas?

Ok, to the OP...
I could only watch a bit of the linked footage.  I still find those images cause me to get angry, almost eight years after the fact.

Irishknight -> RE: 102 minutes that changed America (9/8/2009 3:37:05 AM)

Terrorists are no better than animals and deserve to be treated as rabid animals. They need to know that they will not be held for a few years and relased if caught. They need to be wrapped in pigskins and buried in unmarked graves when captured. These monsters need to be humiliated, wrapped in pigskin and sent to hell. If we start treating them in that way, they will realize that there are no 72 virgins awaiting them when they murder our women and children.
Does the idea disgust me? You bet. Would I still do it to protect the innocents that these bastards muder? Damned right I would.

Go ahead and flame me and say what you will. As Popeye said, "There is no place for social workers in war." The longer we try the soft approach, the longer this bullshit will go on.

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: 102 minutes that changed America (9/8/2009 5:07:20 AM)

What I find most striking about the film if I'm being honest is the total inability to fight fire, despite their best efforts, in a high-rise building or to evacuate people. I'm not sure if the WTC towers had a sprinkler system but I expect it would have all most certainly been water based which would have only spread the fuel around further. No one expected a fire load of jet fuel but future systems should use foam like is used when a plane crash lands at an airport. If those fires had been brought under control sooner those towers almost certainly wouldn't have collapsed at all and this is where most people probably died, not from the initial impacts.

You know you see those heavy lifting helicopters lifting tanks, they should have some on standby containing foam tanks that could be flown adjacent to a high-rise building then a high pressure jet of foam could be directed into the fire from the outside. The outside perimeter is where the fire is being fuelled by the most oxygen. You could even spray some kind of viscous coating on the outside to remove the external source of oxygen.

In any case these buildings were designed long ago and I expect modern design philosophy would cope better under such a situation.

edited to add: I suppose the towers could have collapsed eventually due to the wind forces alone but I'm a strong believer in equilibrium of forces meaning if a structure is proven to stand up for a period of time as it is and the external forces applied to it remain more or less the same it will stand much longer. The only significant thing affected the structure in my view was the heat from the fire and if the fire had been at the very top of the buildings rather than a few floors down that obviously also would have helped the situation.
