There are exceptions - these are the exceptions though.  Why is this different than discrimination of race?  Why is it different than sexism.  If it is different I'd be curious to hear how it is different when compared to both

Arpig -> RE: Religion Discriminates (9/9/2009 11:05:16 PM)

Not sure just what you are talking about, discriminating against a given religion, a religion discriminating against non-members....its hard to discuss without knowing what we are discussing.

GotSteel -> RE: Religion Discriminates (9/10/2009 12:28:44 AM)

I agree, could you be more specific Esinn

FangsNfeet -> RE: Religion Discriminates (9/10/2009 12:31:41 AM)

It's PEOPLE and not Religions that discriminate.

Your religion or beliefs can be kept secret or proclaimed at the top of your lungs for everyone to hear. Religion can be hidden or lied about. Very few job applications ask people for their religious practice.

The beliefs of people can discriminate against others based on how they act, dress, live, diet, etc... I remember when a guy wanted to play guitar for his church. His preacher told my friend that he needed to quit smoking first. A performer for church is suppose to set an example for the rest of the congrigation.

I never liked that fact that to Muslims, I'm just an Infidel.

Based on beliefs, many think on how everyone else should act and behave. When one person is out of line, it's easy to have bias and a bad attitude towards that person.

Most religions do dectate judgement on people in the after life. Did you believe? Did you worship? Did you obey? Rather than discriminate, the All Mighty only judges in the fair sense of "Did you follow the rules?"

Rather than the religion doing the discriminating, it's the people that discriminate.

Lemme take a wild stab.

If a private company hires, they are required to hire without regard to religion, race, etc.  When a religious organization hires, they almost always hire their own religion and frequently violate other discrimination laws (e.g., the Catholic church hires priests and always hires male Catholics for them. They also discriminate on family status.  And I'll wager that they almost always hire Caucasians).

Is that what you mean, OP?

nephandi -> RE: Religion Discriminates (9/10/2009 5:49:40 AM)

Greetings

I do not really understand what you are talking about. But everything discriminates, putting members of their own group before others, that is natural, it is how we are made, our own tribe first, then others.

Be Well

I never liked the fact that to Christians, I am condemned to eternal torture in hell because I am an "Unsaved Sinner".

Let's face it, the basis of all monotheistic religions is "God exists. God loves one group of people more than any other. And my group happens to be the one he loves."

Rule -> RE: Religion Discriminates (9/10/2009 6:25:48 AM)

Religions are behavioral algorithms for populations on how to function. Internal and/or external discrimination can be a part of such algorithms. People may convert from one algorithm to another if they think it is to their advantage; usually it is the lower class that converts first, I suspect. Populations also may choose to alter the algorithm they adhere too - conversion is easier, though.

True, religious texts are so open ended the true interpretation is all in the mind of the individual.

tazzygirl -> RE: Religion Discriminates (9/10/2009 1:16:12 PM)

YAY!!! someone finally got it!!!

almost... lol

Religion has never hurt anyone. Religion has neveer killed, maimed, demeaned, belittled or anything else.

When you can seperate the person from their beliefs, then you may achieve an understanding.

A man who kills a Dr because the man is against abortion, and the Dr offers this service, is a good example of what i mean.

My mom brought us up with a phrase.... The path to hell is paved with good intentions.

Although the downside of this reasoning is that you may as well read James and the Giant peach to get an idea as to what god expects of you.

Although Roald Dahl obviously at the time didn't realise he was writing the word of god.

What makes you think "god" expects anything of me?

Tazzy, so it's kind of like "Guns don't kill people. Assholes with guns kill people." Only this time it "Religion doesn't kill, maim, demean or belittle people. Assholes with religion kill, main demean or belittle people?

The same ten commandments that atheists and others state we dont need to live a moral or good life?

They are basically written into our laws already, with maybe an exception or two.

So, again, i ask, what does "god" expect of me, that the law doesnt expect of you?

hmm... how many religions advocate such actions?

what i meant was... just because it is done in the name of religion doesnt mean it was done because of religion.

shadowowl -> RE: Religion Discriminates (9/10/2009 2:39:17 PM)

Religious discrimination is different because you choose your religion or can change it.  sex and race can not be changed well ok sex can lol but it's not exactly easy to do.
Religions also attempt to change who you are more often then not the crazed fanatics are in most religions.

Laymedown60 -> RE: Religion Discriminates (9/10/2009 2:41:02 PM)

Religions don't discriminate people do and they discriminate in every single group regardless if affiliated with religion. It is a personal choice to say I am better than you…but in this case….[:D]

ps sorry tazzygirl the response was for the op...I'll learn
