Speaking of odd names...I was born in Japan, and my parents were hoping for a girl. My mother had decided to name me Mariko, because she loved the name and it could be westernized as Mary to spare me any teasing if need be. Well,I came out distinctly not a girl, and needless to say my mother was disappointed (they tried one more time for a girl...kid#5 and then my Dad had a vasectomy[:D]). Anyway,my Mum says she came damned close to naming me Mariko anyway, telling herself it could be westernized as Mark. Now given that I went through high schoolin Japan, I am damned glad she didn't (can anybody say a boy named Sue ?). But once I was an adult and stuck with the oh-so-originalname of Bob, I aften wish she had gone ahead and done it...at least I would be pretty certain I was the only guy in the world with my name. [:D]
