And on Yahoo, I like the comment of one fellow: I bet he wouldn't have done it if Toby Keith was the one getting an award.

Yup. (This coming from a Steve Earle fan, I'd say its ironic except his stuff is good)

He's one of the last of the true country storytellers, that's why. Nothing short of a bona fide genius.

Couldn't agree with you more. I have every album he has put out (except for Shut Up and Die Like an Aviator) as well as some cool bootlegs of him in concert. Since discovering his music I have started exploring the genre, the roots country storyteller type of music. Its really folk music in the real sense, music for and about regular folk. Guy Clark is somebody I have started listening to...not as good as Earle, but he has some good songs.

Oh and lets not forget Tom Waits[:)]

I'm not one to get excited about celebrities at all, but a few years ago while traveling I struck up a conversation in a coffee shop with a friendly man with a pleasant face and a calm demeanor, and he mentioned he was a musician on the road with his wife, also a musician/singer. Said something about how he met her when he was playing in her brother's band, and something about the way he said it made me instantly realize he was married to Steve Earle's sister. Boy, did we have something  to talk about then. Terrific guy, and I really enjoyed meeting him. It was very exciting to meet someone who'd been a part of so many albums that have meant so much to me over the years.

I'm going to see Guy Clark this Thursday, I believe. I've caught him a number of times, and the only thing that changes about him is that it's somehow an even richer experience each time. If you're really developing a taste for this genre, you should check out Townes Van Zandt, if you haven't already. He came out of that same early 70s West Texas alt-country, beat-poet-with-cowboy-boots germinator that spawned Clark, Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Jerry Jeff Walker. The last song on Earle's "El Corazon" is a tribute to him; can't recall the name at the moment, just the lyrics. Earle worshipped the guy. Said one time, "Townes Van Zandt is absolutely the best songwriter in the world, and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that to his face." To which Van Zandt commented, "I've met Bob Dylan, and I've met his bodyguards. No offense to Steve, but I don't believe he's going to get within ten feet of Bob's coffee table." Or something to that effect. If you're not familiar with him, I think you'd love the guy. "My Mother The Mountain" is a good album to start with.

As long as guys like Kanye and Vick exist... the "N word" will be alive and well in American culture as the only adjective that can possible describe their behaviour.  It's nice to know jerks exist in a variety of colors.

This is why I DREAD any time  Kanye does anything.  This RIGHT here.

the only adjective? Really?  Are you sure? Because when I first heard about it I thought, "Wow, what an unstable, egotistical, attention whoring maniac."  There's a few right there.  Does the "N"-word apply to John McEnroe for all the time's he's acted stupid, or Billybob Thornton for the interview he did on the Canadian radio show?

Think about it.  I know that you weren't trying to be a bigot.

Bolded part is pretty much what went through my head, too.  Amen to the rest of your post, VioletGray.

15 years ago my (ex) brother-in-law was calling it "rock with hats."  I liked that.

Daddysredhead -> RE: Classless - Kanye West (9/14/2009 7:52:19 PM)

Well, I'm not saying his stupid, mean actions last night were acceptable in any way, shape or form - not by a long shot... but he made a live apology on Leno just now.  Where I'm from, an apology, if sincere, is accepted.  I am not going to sit in judgment of whether or not his apology was sincere because that is not my job.  Just thought I'd mention that people often do really fucked up things that they regret later.  I have...

NuevaVida -> RE: Classless - Kanye West (9/14/2009 7:59:21 PM)

Hiya DRH :)

I think the issue I have when a drunk apologizes is, it's sincere when they say it, but then they pick up their next drink and fuck up all over again.  It's like a wife beater apologizing to his wife the next morning.  Consistent GOOD behavior is what makes an apology meaningful to me...then you can forgive a blunder here & there...

Daddysredhead -> RE: Classless - Kanye West (9/14/2009 8:06:32 PM)

Hi, NV.  [:)]

I totally understand.  I was married to an alcoholic for many years, and I've been there, heard that.  I understand completely. I just hope that a certain amount of conviction on his heart and mind will keep him from being a repeat asshat-behavior offender.

They perpetuate a stereotype is all. I'd insist the NAACP kick their ass.

Which stereotype would that be? Please, extrapolate: I'm fascinated.

It pains me to point out that four pages on, LotusSong still can't explain any more what the fuck she means about the stereotype she's talking about [:(] . This kind of shit should not be left to rest.

IMO, Kittin... there is no explanation that will justify either of the posts you reference.  I, too, am disgusted by the unrepentant bigotry in them, which is glossed over with a thin veneer of BS that smacks of a comment like, "Well, I'm not racist... as a matter of fact, I had a black friend in grade school."  [>:]    [8|]

tazzygirl -> RE: Classless - Kanye West (9/14/2009 8:55:35 PM)

This is the same man who thinks Beyonce... as good as she is... is more influential to music than Tina Turner. I think he has hit the bottle a few.. dozen.. too many times.

Lockit -> RE: Classless - Kanye West (9/14/2009 9:20:55 PM)

When he was on Leno, he nearly broke down and cried over all this. He looked very depressed. He said he would be taking some time off and basically needed to think and sort things out. Maybe rehab? I think he seemed sincere and may have gotten a wake up call... but at the same time, the jaded me wants to say... yeah right... always sorry but will do it again. I guess only time will tell and most likely, people will be watching closely after last night.

Leno asked him when he knew it was wrong. He said that he knew it was wrong when he handed the mic back to Taylor and she didn't continue talking. If that is the case... why in his apology did he sound like he was justifying what he did because he was right about her video not being the best? Humm... I think my jaded may win out here! lol

Hi babe... I'm just glad we both saw the same shit... not happy the shit exists... it's just good people can point it when it peeks its ugly head.

Daddysredhead -> RE: Classless - Kanye West (9/14/2009 9:29:20 PM)

Oui, chatton... if it smells, looks like, reads like, feels like a big steaming pile of poop... it is.

DavanKael -> RE: Classless - Kanye West (9/14/2009 9:33:05 PM)

Kanye is a douchebag, asshat, fucktard: select other insulting term of preference and I am likely to agree with it.
Beyonce did a very cool thing by turning the mic back over to the girl who was interrupted by Kanye.

Nope.  He knew it was wrong when he sobered up and saw that public sentiment was running 100% against him.

A rant... Bill Cosby and George Carlin spent years playing bars and honing their craft.  Yo-yo Ma and Yitzhak Perlman worked on their craft for years...  A rapper can be an instant star and have no appreciation of the incredible good fortune they have.  Just wear a bunch of furs and gold, and act arrogant.  If West's career came crashing down, it would be one of the best things that could happen to him.

VanIsleKnight -> RE: Classless - Kanye West (9/15/2009 1:55:14 AM)

Yeah... me and my roommate both consider this guy childish, arrogant, and truth be told, neither of us think he's remotely as talented as he thinks he is.  This kind of thing I'd expect in junior high, but I suppose any attention is good attention.
