WFLD, the local fox affiliate, is owned by Rupert Murdoch. They've been anti olympics all along. This story was broadcast once. They don't usually rebroadcast the same news story for days on end.

I blame Obama...it's all his fault...and it's only fair to blame him because of the way that Bush was treated when he was the president.

You know, I had to try it, but I guess I don't find it as much fun as some.

See Ken...

Take a queue from Spinner... its OK to lighten up and have fun with stuff!

I wonder how ACORN's demise might impact The Windy's City's Efforts???

BTW Ken... should not Chicago's money go to providing kids with health care instead???

Where ever the olympics are held, it always seems like the tax payers of the host city end up footing the bill. No olympics and no G 20 summit in Milwaukee ever I hope..

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: Chicago Olympics 2016...Not all Chicagoans seem happy (9/28/2009 6:57:38 AM)

Yes the host nation and city in particular will foot an Olympic bill but at the same time if the focus is on regenerating an area and leaving a legacy for future generations then I don't see it as a bad thing. It forces the authorities to give something back rather than saying constantly ‘no no no we can't afford this.’

Even in the darkest days or the global economy I have no worries about London hosting the games. To think it is just one big cost and nothing positive comes from it in terms of inspiring youngsters to take up sport or convert an Olympic village into housing for local residents is very short-sighted.

Not all social progress can be measured on a financial scale. It’s funny because if the private sector didn’t realise in the past you had to spend out and take financial risks to move forward there would be no regeneration of anything and that is the current attitude sadly.

One thing I didn’t like about the Olympics is the way the decision is made as to who wins the bid and how it seemed you have to get members on side by basically bribing them with lavish dinning etc. It could easily be considered as corrupt and my personal view after hearing about the bidding process for 2012 is that those bidding could have saved themselves a lot of money if the IOC was more transparent in terms of how the members were coming to their decision and if stricter rules were made as to hosting IOC delegates.

Seems everytime I watch the Olympics, the sponsor goes all out, ready to count the procedes and profits from all the tourists who turn out.  But....nothing satisfies some, and most can find anything to complain over.

On a personal note, I refuse to support the Olympics anywhere and in any fashion until they admit that synchronized swimming and rhythmic gymnastics are not really sports.

I'd go back to that last link and look at some of those pictures from Athens.

Tons and tons of money will be made...but who really benefits?

BTW... I wonder when the Islamic counties like Syria, Saudi Arabia and several others will be banned for not allowing women to participate?

Awww c'mon.  You don't like all those pretty ribbons swirling thru the air during those gymnastic routines?  Or those water dancers?  [&:]

Spinner they are sports, you just do not want to admit you have a secret desire to do both.

*Grins down right evilly and goes hide somewhere good.*

It's up to the nation that is bidding to plan what the legacy will be and how facilities will be used. Nobody said the Olympics has to be as expensive as it was in China and only leave behind a grotesque clump of steel that hardly anyone will use. Regarding Greece I can only think the organisers in Athens didn't think to involve local authorities and or sporting bodies if they now find themselves with 21 unused venues out of 22. They should have thought about duel use design if it was hard to secure contracts for sporting bodies or local authorities to take responsibility for a structure with one purpose. Most venues can be designed for a temporary use during the Olympics and a permanent use after the Olympics, just takes a bit of foresight. Forget the venues and perhaps look at the transportation infrastructure legacy. The fact is the problems you moan about but the improvements that have come about in Athens and how that has helped their economy you take for granted as if it was always there or would have been at that stage without an Olympic bid.

There are definitely lessons to be learnt such as seeing if existing popular facilities can be renovated to Olympic standard rather than attempting everything to be in one area built as new. I don't see any reason to say 'no you shouldn't even consider an Olympic bid because of the failings in a previous Olympics i.e. in another economic time and a totally different city with different long term needs.' however. You should ask if there is a common objective for the city that could be achieved with an Olympic bid and go from there. i.e. Stratford east London had some of the poorest areas in the whole of the UK and was blighted with contaminated land that no private contractor wants to touch without some degree of Government backing. People moan about the Millennium Dome and how that was handled but it too was built on contaminated land no private contractor alone would go near and eventually it emerged as the O2 a successful entertainment venue. Things like this are small pieces of the jigsaw that there isn't a profit for government in short term but with time the impact of such improvements feed back into the economy in a good way.

I think the USA should boycott on this issue; giving the rest of us a better chance of medals especially in track and field. It always amazes me the USA is so strong in track and field when it gets such little coverage compared to other spots that nobody outside of the US can understand.

Incidentally the London Olympics will be the first that female boxers are allowed to compete in and I think that is a good thing, you speak as if the west has always treated women equally. All you can do is set an example for others to follow and the Olympics is supposed to be about the sport i.e. non political where nations can temporarily put aside their differences unlike Moscow in 1980.

I couldn't care less about swimming but any sport that encourages healthy, pretty, young women to prance around in tight skimpy outfits is okay in my book.

87% of the population is Muslim (give or take a few percentage points depending upon which source you check) - I'd say that makes them Islamic.

DomKen -> RE: Chicago Olympics 2016...Not all Chicagoans seem happy (9/28/2009 12:21:22 PM)

I'm originally from Atlanta and have many relatives in the area. I don't know how much if any debt the games produced for the city but Atlanta gained a lot. Turner Field, new dorms for Georgia Tech, the Tech aquatic center and Centennial Park to name a few. The town I grew up in got a world class equestrian center which is a nice boost to the local economy.

As to the Chicago bid, I hope we get it as most of the development is slated for the south side of the city and they could use it. It will naturally boost the economy as there are a lot of construction projects to get done in an 8 year timeframe. The guys running the local organization seem to be on pretty solid ground regarding financing the games so I'm hopeful that the city won't be stuck with any huge debt.

pahunkboy -> RE: Chicago Olympics 2016...Not all Chicagoans seem happy (9/28/2009 1:03:38 PM)

Chicago says it HAS much of the needed infastructure in place.

Years ago- I wanted Chicago to get it... even until recently.  But come on- cost over runs will add taxes to my family there and the place is already on the map.  What is there to PROVE?

We know who wins the bid in 3-4 days.....    I cant think of ANY project there that has not had fabulous cost over runs!!!

pahunkboy -> RE: Chicago Olympics 2016...Not all Chicagoans seem happy (9/28/2009 1:05:02 PM)

Cook county tho taxes are - running people out to other counties.
