Democrats are asking if GOP is rooting against America

During the Bush era, Republicans from Karl Rove to Joe Wilson questioned — in ways both veiled and overt — the patriotism of Democrats who challenged the administration’s Iraq policy, pre-war intelligence and surveillance programs.

But the joyous reaction in some GOP quarters to the International Olympics Committee's snub of Chicago — coupled with the party’s rapid-fire reaction to bad economic data – has some Democrats turning the tables and asking if Republicans are the ones cheering against America now.

Many Democrats saw the outbursts following the IOC decision – the merry Tweets, videos of cheering conservatives and chest-thumping by party leaders like Newt Gingrich — as part of larger pattern that includes the flirtation of right-wing Texans like Gov. Rick Perry with secession and the caustic tone of right-wing talk radio, embodied by Rush Limbaugh’s “I want him to fail” comment about Obama in January.

“Some of these people are starting to put politics first and country second,” said Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), the head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, taking particular issue with Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. “The American people are starting to wonder if they are rooting against America,” he added.

Two influential progressive spokesmen, Talking Points Memo founder Josh Marshall and Markos Moulitsas of Daily Kos, hit that theme hard last week, with Marshall musing, “I wonder if right-wingers would be less stoked if Chicago were part of America.”

Moulitsas was more blunt. “So when did wingnuts start cheering against America? Their unbridled joy at losing out to Brazil is a bit unseemly, isn't it?” he asked, adding: "America, f—- yeah!" has become "F—- America, Yeah!"

...........Obama’s critics on the right openly ridiculed his lobbying trip to Copenhagen on behalf of his hometown as a major distraction from the country’s larger problems – and proof that he was losing “command focus.”

And the reaction to the city’s defeat was swift and, in some places, ecstatic. A young organizer at the conservative “Defending the American Dream Summit” interrupted a panel discussion last Friday to reads the news from a BlackBerry. A liberal tracker attending the event caught the crowd’s reaction in the Arlington, Va. hotel ballroom on video: The place erupted in hooting and wild applause, a scene perversely reminiscent of the exultation that followed the U.S. Olympic hockey team’s “Miracle on Ice” victory against the Soviets in 1980.

“[Chicago lost] on the very first vote! They did not have any chance…” the woman said to an ovation, recorded by Think Progress, an offshoot of the liberal Center for American Progress.

A blogger with the right-wing Weekly Standard reported: “Chicago loses! Chicago loses!... Cheers erupt at WEEKLY STANDARD world headquarters,” before hastily pulling down the post and replacing it with an item that omitted the newsroom reaction.

.................Democrats also point at the way the GOP has been pouncing on any scrap of economic data that shows the economy is still struggling.

Within the first 45 minutes after the Labor Department announced a worse-than-expected 263,000 jobs lost in September, POLITICO received no fewer than eight GOP press releases blasting away at Obama for failing to stem the tide of unemployment.

The office of Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) literally hit the send button at 8:30 a.m. -- the moment of the announcement. .

These people are off their rockers. It's the only plausible explanation.

Yes - because after all everyone pointing to the failure of this Administration MUST be a Republican. There are no self thinkers. So say those marching in lock-step to the party based political rhetoric.

Wow - can you be more paranoid?

Which wasn't the point.

Why would anyone be happy to see the Olympics lost to another country or hope for failure as Limbaugh did?

While you try to pretend you are non-partisan you are one of those completely marching in lock-step with this.

This isn't about agreeing or disagreeing with the administration. This is about people who cheer at the fact that the administration is facing serious problems. So, what's YOUR explanation for applauding with glee when bad shit happens? Is it a sign of mental imbalance, lack of maturity, and moral ineptitude? I reckon it is.

I'd say declaring a war lost, or coming out and saying a new strategy will fail before it's even implemented (Mr. President on the Surge) a little different than cheering the loss of the Olympic games.

But that's just me

Having the "Olympics" in Chicago would be a losing proposition.
*Who* would be paying for all the $bilions of construction? Sure, hotels and restaurants would be full, for ten days or so then back to normal and they certainly wouldn't offset the massive costs to "host" it.
Then, what do you do with the buildings afterwards, "Midnight Basketball?"

I doubt that "The Democrats" would be so worried about it if the rest of the country weren't joining in.

Unh, because some people (including a lot of Chicagoans) viewed it as a financial gamble that could blow up in our faces. Note, for example, the analysis in Time. What the fuck is so sinister about reasonable people holding different views, and being glad to see them prevail?

Joining in at what?

Rooting for someone to fail? Luckily, I think "the rest" of the country is hoping Obama will succeed.

Unless of course this was another attempt to switch the topic of a thread which seems a bit more likely.

There is nothing wrong with reasonable people holding different views and being glad to see them prevail. However, there is a perception that the GOP has decided to take every Obama failure as a personal victory. I think this will be one of their difficulties in the upcomming elections. I do not think it is only democrats who have this perception that the GOP would rather see the country get worse than Obama have a victory. I do, however, think that it will be argued by conservatives that the very idea of this perception is completely unfounded and paranoid. What remains to be seen is how the independents, who hold all modern elections in their hands, end up thinking.

Hmm. Here's someone else who is "rooting against America":

quote:

Barack Obama furious at General Stanley McChrystal speech on Afghanistan

The relationship between President Barack Obama and the commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan has been put under severe strain by Gen Stanley McChrystal's comments on strategy for the war.

According to sources close to the administration, Gen McChrystal shocked and angered presidential advisers with the bluntness of a speech given in London last week. The next day he was summoned to an awkward 25-minute face-to-face meeting on board Air Force One on the tarmac in Copenhagen, where the president had arrived to tout Chicago's unsuccessful Olympic bid.

***

In London, Gen McChrystal, who heads the 68,000 US troops in Afghanistan as well as the 100,000 Nato forces, flatly rejected proposals to switch to a strategy more reliant on drone missile strikes and special forces operations against al-Qaeda.He told the Institute of International and Strategic Studies that the formula, which is favoured by Vice-President Joe Biden, would lead to "Chaos-istan".

When asked whether he would support it, he said: "The short answer is: No."He went on to say: "Waiting does not prolong a favorable outcome. This effort will not remain winnable indefinitely, and nor will public support."

The remarks have been seen by some in the Obama administration as a barbed reference to the slow pace of debate within the White House.

***

Relations between the general and the White House began to sour when his report, which painted a grim picture of the allied mission in Afghanistan, was leaked. White House aides have since briefed against the general's recommendations.

The general has responded with a series of candid interviews as well as the speech. He told Newsweek he was firmly against half measures in Afghanistan: "You can't hope to contain the fire by letting just half the building burn."

***

Critics also pointed out that before their Copenhagen encounter Mr Obama had only met Gen McChrystal once since his appointment in June.

I don't wonder why the American media consistently fails to cover this sort of story.

Nice try at changing the subject, Sanity..but the Afghanistan discussion is down the hall to your right. Of course, I can understand why you want to get off this subject. And so does everyone else who has read your postings.

I'm glad we have you to tell us what everyone's perception is.

Gen McChrystal's views on this administration fit perfectly within with this discussion because no one is rooting against America, the premise is wildly flawed. People like Gen McChrystal and myself are rooting for Obama's failure so that the nation may be saved.

McChrystal should be taken out and summarily shot, or at the very least; like McArthur, put out to pasture.

I imagine that most of the credible CIA operatives that we once had in Afghanistan have put themselves out to pasture already and that McChrystal is half way there himself, judging by the way he's "rooting for America to fail" over there.

credible CIA is an oxymoron. Maybe if we get rid of all these oxymorons, we can concentrate on getting out of Afghanistan and Iraq, and start effectively fighting the war on terror in such places as Pakistan and Saudia Arabia.
