Heretic said: "Maybe you think nobody should be allowed to say anything, ever?"

Well, things can certainly be improved where free speech is concerned... and in fact, has been. It seems that since Bush/Cheany have left, we've stopped the practice of putting protesters into "free speech zones" (fenced in areas, usually miles away from whatever event was going on... sort of like a portable drunk tank, or mini GITMO)

Also, we've stopped arresting people for wearing "Stop the War" t-shirts... in fact, we don't even arrest teabag nut cases when they show up armed with assault weapons at Presidential appearances.

So, I think it's safe to say that the Obama administration is beginning to bring back the idea of free political speech, instead of trying to crush it the way Bush and his cronies did.

Bush was born in Connecticut.
He's just another low i.q. "legacy admission" to "Yale".
What's really funny was that John "French" Kerry scored lower than Bush in school.
And look at Ted Kennedy's kid Patrick "Patches" Kennedy, boy congressman in R.I. He's a borderline retard, drunk and druggie.
He went to Philips - Andover academy, all the scions of the wealthy go there and many of them go on to places like Harvard, Stanford, Tufts etc and where did Patches go,....."Providence College!" lol
"Hey Mom, Dad, I got ex-cepted to Provi-dunce College!" "Whoo Hoo, I'll be killing what brain cells I have left tonight, back up that Chivas Regal truck I'm going to blotto land!!!"
To this day Phillips-Andover or Providence College still won't release young Patche's grade transcripts.
And Ted would often tell young Patches, "Hey! Go get me another drink, what do you think you're doing here?"

And yet....people vote for them, and campaigns decry the faults of the "intellectual elite."

Sad truth is, many Americans value stupidity. It's just like thinking, but easier.

Here, have a beer. NASCAR's on.

Death threats?  Those we report to the cops.  Or we reply with an equally idle threat of awful reprisal.  Depends on the individuals involved.  I mostly don't endorse using free speech that way.

Since the Dixie Chicks remarks were obviously going to stir up strong reactions, are you thinking what they said in the first place should have been banned, or, that since they were popular recording artists, they should be allowed to speak on behalf of Texas, and responses to that then would be banned?  Maybe you think nobody should be allowed to say anything, ever?

Hardly, im a firm believer in the freedom of speech. Dont you just love how a few right sided nut cases tend to take it a bit more upon themselves and decide who can speak and who cant?

Actually, Tazzy, it has been my personal experience that more of those who wish to not allow certain things to be said tend to be on the left/liberal side of things, but perceptions vary, and I'm sure there are plenty of censor wanna-be's in any political stripe.

They can all go fuck themselves, as far I'm concerned.

Music, unfortunately I think you're probably right.
It's pretty bad when the people elected to office are dumber than the ones who put them there.

Gotta love "personal experience", especially when you cant back it up.

Since Bush isnt left... and the "Chick" spoke out against Bush... and didnt you love the fact that they couldnt even get the "damning" quote correct?...its a safe reasoning to deduce the attacks came from the right. The death threats were real.

MarsBonfire -> RE: The crazies are coming out of the and they have radio to support them (10/10/2009 6:52:01 AM)

And of course there was also the case of Bill Mahr... who on a talk show said that the
"terrorists weren't pussies." (bat shit crazy, yes. But not pussies.) and for that... for just observing the fact that the attackers of 9/11 had the resolve to do suicide runs against the WTC, the Bush administration put pressure on his network and got his show cancelled. Just as Agnew kept trying to get the Smothers Brothers off the air during the Nam era.

Republicans are pro censorship of anyone who stands up to critisize them.

tazzygirl -> RE: The crazies are coming out of the and they have radio to support them (10/10/2009 6:59:09 AM)

Bill Mahr will always have a nitch. The Daily Show, The Colbert Report... lol... they at least admit they are for entertainment. And they still manage to upset the conservative set.

MarsBonfire -> RE: The crazies are coming out of the and they have radio to support them (10/10/2009 7:03:38 AM)

Mostly by just telling the unvarished truth, and making jokes about it. Funny, isn't it? If the republicans hadn't gone to the extreme, purging the moderates from their party and leaping off into teabag douchebaggery... all those comics would have no material to go after except for the Dems who are in power.

WTG, republicans! Thanks for drawing the heat off of Obama and keeping the jokes centered squarely on yourselves!

So was the clear channel boycott, and being banned from attending that year's country music awards, iirc. For all of the chanting of that "liberal media conspiracy" mantra, there's a lot of very right leaning elements to the American media.

tazzygirl -> RE: The crazies are coming out of the and they have radio to support them (10/10/2009 7:22:23 AM)

I cant even blame the boycotts. If people ddint buy tickets... then we cant blame any party for that. But when a nut case issues death threats based upon a MIS-statement....

Tazzy, if you want to put yourself in the company you are keeping, you can expect your posts to be regarded accordingly...

Was Bill Maher hauled off to prison for the incredibly stupid and offensive comments that got his TV show cancelled?  I can't speak much to Maher, anymore.  I used to watch his new show on HBO, but I found his stream if bigotry towards people of belief to be offensive, and I don't watch it anymore.  I also call him a bigot at every opportunity, including in a letter to HBO.  His speech, my speech.  Might he get the occasional death threat from an offended fundy?  Could be, but that has nothing to do with me.

Good day

tazzygirl -> RE: The crazies are coming out of the and they have radio to support them (10/10/2009 8:19:34 AM)

The company i happen to be keeping is diverse, intelligent and articulate. Most are not known to throw temper tantrums when they dont get their own way.

The personal insults are beneath you, Heretic... or so i thought. I dont believe i have passed an insult to you through any of this. Just called into question the fact that everyone screams freedom of speech, and others tend to threaten that very freedom we ALL hold so dear. Unless you were one of those who sent such a threat, why are you taking this so personally?

TheHeretic -> RE: The crazies are coming out of the and they have radio to support them (10/10/2009 8:27:34 AM)

What the fuck are you talking about, Tazzy???

Answer the question;  Was Maher hauled off to prison for his speech about the terrorists being "brave?"  Were the Dixie Dumbass Bitches arrested when they got off the plane returning to the country?

The First Amendment has nothing to do with how the consumers of a product react to the words of those who produce it.

Speakin of attempts to control, monitor, and possibly infringe on free political speech... Isn't the current White House the one that had setup a program to have citizens report other citizens for "fishy" statements? Prolly not.

The White House

There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end of life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation. Since we can’t keep track of all of them here at the White House, we’re asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to [email protected].

I won't even get into the cute photo-op last week with all the doctors in "their" white coats.....[8|] ; except to say: what some would call free speech, others would call pure political propaganda (and there is nothing wrong with that either).

Very true: if the other lot do it, it's propaganda, if your lot do it, it's free speech and should never be criticised. I always find that a bit irksome.

tazzygirl -> RE: The crazies are coming out of the and they have radio to support them (10/10/2009 12:07:10 PM)

Nor was Imus. Dont recall Rush or Beck being hauled off either. Many have voiced their "opinions" right or wrong. Their arrest or lack of it has what to do with the rest? The first admendment does protect the right to say what someone wishes to say, within reason. It also protects those who will stir up a shitstorm afterwards against someone who has said what others dont wish to hear.

Its a double edged sword... one some have learned to use with skill.

Thadius -> RE: The crazies are coming out of the and they have radio to support them (10/10/2009 12:40:43 PM)

The courts have found that people burning the American flag is covered by the First Amendment. Should I not also be allowed to express my intentions, if I witness such an action? Hell I could probably count on jury nullification to get me off the assault, battery, and possible manslaughter charges...

Some things that are said or done in the name of free expression, should expect to be met with the possible hostile response.

TheHeretic -> RE: The crazies are coming out of the and they have radio to support them (10/10/2009 12:44:12 PM)

And some just use it to fling poo, and whine when that comes with poo getting flung back.

TheHeretic -> RE: The crazies are coming out of the and they have radio to support them (10/10/2009 12:49:02 PM)

Hiya, Thadius.  Do keep in mind that your right to swing a fist comes to an end at the tip of a flagburner's nose, just as the right of a former Dixie Dumbass Bitches fan to express displeasure stops with credible threats against their lives.  If on that jury, the nullification I'm willing to grant you will stop well short of manslaughter.

Balance.
