I think he was serious or at least Dave Checkett was...Checkett is a local hero keeping the Blues in St Louis and trying to keep the Rams. Here they have been saying Limbaugh was a relatively small investor...$80,000,000 with no say in daily operations.

Because he was such a small investor they could easily drop him and replace his money. If he had been a larger investor they would have fought to keep him in the group.

I don't think so. From Sports Illustrated:

League sources told SI.com that Limbaugh's candidacy in any Rams bid had "zero chance'' of being approved by the league's owners. In his statement, Checketts said Limbaugh's participation had become "a complication and a distraction'' to the group's efforts.

According to league sources, Limbaugh comes with too much troubling baggage in terms of his outspoken views that often intersect the divisive issues of politics and race in America. In a time when the NFL is hoping to have complete uniformity among its team owners in anticipation of the tough collective bargaining negotiations to come with the players union, there was little interest within the league to associate with an owner who is paid to give his highly charged opinions on the radio for hours each week.

"The league would be on pins and needles for three hours a day, five days a week,'' one league source said. "The NFL isn't interested in having its own Mark Cuban situation, where [the Dallas Mavericks owner] is fined for something he said, but then pays the fine, moves on and doesn't care what he says the next time either. The league wants the focus to always be on the game, not the opinions of any particular owner.''

One league source told SI.com that Checketts group was never completely configured any way, and that Limbaugh's participation was never set in stone. In that sense, when word surfaced that he would potentially hold minority ownership in the Rams, it was viewed as a trial balloon of sorts that never advanced much past the potential stage. Checketts is said to be seeking to replace Limbaugh's financial participation with other interested parties.

There was swift reaction to the idea of Limbaugh being involved in NFL ownership, and much of it was not favorable. NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith last weekend sent a letter to the group's board urging players to voice their opinion of Limbaugh's participation. And on Tuesday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell made it clear that Limbaugh would face a high bar regarding approval of his potential stake in the Rams.

"Divisive comments are not what the NFL is all about,'' Goodell said at a two-day NFL owners meeting in Boston. "I've said many times before, we're all held to a high standard here. I would not want to see those comments coming from people who are in a responsible position in the NFL -- absolutely not.''

Goodell's strong comments were not just a message of sensitivity to the players in regards to Limbaugh's controversial reputation. One league source said it was a message to the league's entire customer base that the NFL would not be welcoming to a multi-platformed media figure who has a history of troubling and at times racially inflaming comments.

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay on Tuesday predicted that Limbaugh's potential ownership would face stiff opposition within the league, and said he could never vote to approve such a group. A league source went even further Wednesday, telling SI.com that even with Limbaugh no longer involved, Checketts' ownership group from here on out would face questions regarding the wisdom of having associated itself with such a divisive presence in the first place. The source said Limbaugh within the league was seen as "a drain on anyone else in the group who might have legitimacy.''

Another league source voiced puzzlement over Checketts not discerning the potential backlash of Limbaugh's participation in his group in advance of the news becoming public. "I would have assumed he would have run it up the flagpole with the league before it became known,'' a league source said. "Then a tepid response would have told him where things stood.''

Others within the league believe that Limbaugh may have viewed his participation in Checketts group as nothing more than a dose of free publicity for the radio host, no matter the outcome or the response to his involvement. "There was no downside in any of this for him,'' a league source said. "He gets a week of free publicity, and in the end, he'll frame his rejection to his benefit.''

What they are saying here in St Louis is that the average investor is contributing $250,000,000 Limbaugh’s $80,000,000 would be much easier to replace then $250,000,000. This is good news they say because if Limbaugh had contributed the full $250,000,000 they may not have been able to replace it and would have had to push forward with his participation or drop out of the bidding.

They are attributing this reasoning to an inside source in the bidding group.

I think this reasoning is sound if irrelevant.

Nonsense. Without one $250,000,000 investor there'd be no bid?

But whatever. This falls into the "Who cares" bin for me.

lol …You are throwing $250,000,000 around like it is nothing... It is a lot easier to replace 80million then 250...makes sense to me.

But it is over and who cares anymore.

Did Rush plan this all along KNOWING that his ownership hopes would be shot down? Also,  now he has something to rail about on his little radio program.  I havent listened to him yet today but Dollars to Donuts, he will be blaming someone for the fact that he couldnt spend his money to buy part of the team.  Who else thinks this is what he planned all along?

From rikigrl's link in post #168:

"This is not about the NFL, it's not about the St. Louis Rams, it's not about me," Limbaugh said. "This is about the ongoing effort by the left in this country, wherever you find them, in the media, the Democrat Party, or wherever, to destroy conservatism, to prevent the mainstreaming of anyone who is prominent as a conservative.

"Therefore, this is about the future of the United States of America and what kind of country we're going to have."

This couldn't have worked out better for Rush if he had scripted it himself(not sure I want to give him credit for being a fucking genius or not). His participation was never going to fly,but the reaction to it,especially the totaly superfolous Sharpton letter gives him material for a months worth of shows no to mention painting him in a sympathetic light amongst fellow right wingers.....a win win for Rush.

Michael Vick is talent(talent has allways been subject to different rules...not nice, but it is what it is) went to jail ...paid his debt to society.Found a team willing to employ him....I don't see the problem(I don't like it....but it is what it is)
Where's PacMan Jones playing?
Jerry Jones is a well respected owner....whats your problem with him?
Al Davis would never be allowed to buy a team today......but seeing as he allready owns one.....this isn't a problem for him...but has most certainly been a headache for every Commisioner since Rozelle. But again ...whats your problem with him?
There's no denying that Michael Vick has talent...that does not excuse his actions.  As for paying for his crime...he did that also.  That doesn't mean he is entitled to a job in the N.F.L..  Personally, I am one of those who would have been just as happy or happier if he'd not been allowed back in.
As for Pac-Man Jones, he may well not be playing right now but he certainly did play while going through all his legal troubles and those legal issues were not small issues.
Jerry Jones may well be a respected team owner by some but many consider him to be a fast-talking shyster who built "JerryWorld" with taxpayer dollars (hmmmm, that would make him a liberal, wouldn't it?  Taking what the Government gives you, even when it comes from someone else's hard work).
Al Davis...I suppose I could go on and on about Al Davis but you yourself stated it...He wouldn't be an owner today if he was applying so why doesn't the NFL...in their attempts to avoid controversy...force him out?
Vick....Not entitled, obviously no one is "entitled"...on the other hand there was no legal bar to him playing. He found an owner and a franchise which was willing to take the p.r heat for hiring him and did so,I don't see the problem. Its the American way....just as it is your right to grab a sign and boycott or just refuse to watch.
PacMan also was suspended numerous times during his oh so short career ...till finally he was too much of an embarressment.....and had too little talent left in his tank....ergo no longer playing.
Jerry Jones- well if you wish to remove every owner who has convinced a municipality to bankroll their palaces........your going to need a whole new slew of owners.
Al Davis.....just try to get him out! This is why 75% of the owners must agree to potential buyers.....once their in it's not so easy to get them out.
Surely a good conserative like yourself can understand the difference between keeping a man out of an ownership position...and stripping a man of what he owns?

I sure can...I watch it happen every April 15th...June 15th...Sept 15th...Jan 15th.  And I didn't say "strip him" which would imply taking his ownership away unlawfully, I suggested they find a way to "force him out"...in much the same way they found a way to KEEP Rush out.

slvemike4u -> RE: Sharpton has asked the NFL to nix Limbaugh's purchase of the Rams (10/15/2009 3:09:35 PM)

Creative are you seriously telling me you can not see the difference between keeping someone out.......and kicking someone out.
There is a mechanism in place(the 75% requirement) for ensuring that someone like Rush doesn't sit at the table.......there is no such ability in the league bylaws for forcing him out.Al aint going nowhere till he wants to go......for that matter neither or the Raiders(they suck....lol)

Michael Vick is an ASS that yes was caught, convicted....and as others have been done in other sports, Vick should have been BANNED for life from football.........what message does allowing him back in say to all? yeah sure you made it, you are making millions playing a game, one of the best, now convict............then continue to praise him, sheeze!

Butch,

When multiple people have $250,000,000 to pool to buy a sports team, there's only so many options:

*they have disposal income to drop on things like this--it IS nothing.
*it's a sound investment (it isn't--or people would borrow to invest).

Or, if nobody's left with $250,000,000 (there are several, though), then the team is priced out of the market.

We do at least still pretend we do things via markets in this country.

You're also ignoring practical solutions--three $80,000,000ish investors would replace the $250,000,000 investor.

This is, after all, an economy worth trillions.
