Is there someplace a grown woman can go to learn how to be girly?

The details are in the profile, but here's the thing:

We figure that another woman would be just the ticket to help my girl learn about makeup, hair, how to make sure clothes fit, etc...

I confess I've seen "What Not To Wear" (and frankly, she's a candidate) but we don't have five grand.

Someone willing to 'girl it up' with my girl would be a delight.

This isn't going to be sexual.

A makeup counter's primary goal would be to sell makeup, so that seems out.

Suggestions are appreciated!

What's the problem with her fashion condition? You need to be more precise.

The main problem is that she's got kinny arms and legs, small waist/hips/butt, and a big chest.

I'm not complaining by any means. :D

But her wardrobe is all Tshirts that make her look a lot bigger than she is.

I am sure there are tips and tricks for this.  I've just got no idea what they are and reading about things is not a solution that's any fun.

Sunnyfey, we're going to be buying things a bit at a time, rather than one huge fashion spree.

Ideally, we're hoping to find a woman that will meet up with us (though I don't really have to be present after our first meeting) and the shopping can be focused on the learning and trying things on, rather than buying everything in sight.

This actually sounds like fun. :) If that's her in the left picture, she's got a lot of good basics to work with. There are many feminine looks out there that would work well with her. If I lived near you I'd be in touch. Unfortunately, I don't.

V necks, scoop necks, reveal the arms, NO T-SHIRTS! T-shirts are disgusting on any grown woman, but particularly on those endowed with big boobs. NO.

Forbid them.

It sounds like you need to take a day to go to a large department store and experiment. By your description, she got the long straw in the body-type department, so... enjoy (is it her on the left hand side of your avatar?).

It's not her at all.  It's a before/after photo that I found online and took the face out of.

She's a 36DD, with a 28-30 to follow.

Another member emailed and said that first, find a good bra.  Several good bras.

Would this be a good starting point?  Anyone in LA want to go lingerie shopping?  (these would be for use, not just my viewing pleasure)

I've no idea what that face means.

And she needs bras that fit.  It makes sense that these would be the foundation item.

If I knew what to do, or if she did, we wouldn't be in this fix. ;)

Though it was indeed a strange request, come to think of it.

A good bra will be critical. Once she had several bras that she is comfortable in, then you can start buying clothes. You don't want to buy a cute dress and discover she doesn't have a bra that she can wear with it!

Honestly, I would love to help with this. I have experience being several different body types, including H-cup and 200 pounds. Yay for breast reductions and Weight Watchers! Sadly, I am in North Carolina so the best I can offer is advice and if ya'll want to message me I will do my best for you there. Once you've got the bras, I'm going to suggest frequent trips to Goodwill. A) Because it's cheap and B) Because their stock changes all the time. Even if she doesn't find anything 9/10 times she'll see how her body looks in a lot of different styles and fabrics so she can get a better idea of what looks good on her and what her personal style is.

Please let me know if I can be of any help!

This seems highly logical to me.

It gives us a starting point.

I would expect a message sometime in the next day or two, from her or myself.

The consensus (so far) is for the bras to fit well and everything comes from there.

I'm a man, so bras I notice as being lacy and pretty, or as unnecessary obstacles.  Even for a larger chest, should the girls stay pretty level?  Is a little downturn acceptable?

A well fitting bra is critical. There are many stores that will help with this and not expect you to purchase right then. I would suggest going to a higher end store like Bloomingdales, they are not on commission and the sales people are trained well. A good bra can easily run you $60 but with good care can last a couple of years at least. I would never suggest going cheap on this item, buy the best you can. Online stores like biggerbras.com (no really, that is the name) are very good once you are a little familiar with brands and how they fit, you can do a Google search as well. I have found when I was younger that some of Fredrick's of Hollywood's bras were pretty cheap and held up well. I am out of their cup size range now so don't shop there.
Check out the community colleges in your area, see if there are any cosmetology schools, you can get your hair done, facial and makeup done for almost nothing so the student can get practice. Another trick from when I was much younger and poorer. The good thing is that they explain everything to you step-by-step, especially facials, what they are using and why, and they are not pushing $200 creams on you like in a spa.

I wish I were closer and able to help you two out, as I'm still going through the process of learning about all this stuff myself. anyhow,  here's an article I found by googleing "fashion tips for big busted women" it may be a good place to at least start.

Good luck,

Simone

As a teacher, I have an inherent distrust of anything with the words 'google' and 'breast'.

Plus, things made for a bustier woman seem to be big all around.  Law of averages, I suppose.

We're both impressed at the level of 'that sounds like fun!' that women are expressing.  We just need one here.

MEllen444, the cosmetology school is an intriguing idea.

There is one around, and I know the value of making a student explain (you remember about 95% of what you teach people to do).

And worst-case, I'm sure there will be a sink nearby to rinse off distasters.

Actually the larger the breast the more support becomes critical and you have to scarifice pretty and lacy for proper support. Cause take it from me, back problems suck. I am way too young to have trouble getting up and off the bed but that is what happens! If you have trouble finding bras, try Lane Bryant and for the love of all that is good in this way stay the hell AWAY from Victoria's Secret. Every time I used to go in there they would try to stuff my H-cups into DD bras. Be very firm about what you want and refuse to be bullied. I have found bra saleswomen to be worse than used car salesmen honestly, even telling me I didn't know what size I was when I had been told by a doctor who specializes in breast care. They refused to believe till I came out wearing an H-cup bra, pulled my shirt down and asked if that was how a bra is supposed to fit. I got a stuttered "Yes".

Edited to add: And I look forward to hearing from ya'll!

Don't knock the make-up counter. Mac for instance, which is really good make-up, will do her whole face for free if she buys 50 dollars worth of make-up. If she needs make-up anyway, why not buy some and get a free lesson while you are at it? A salon would charge 50 just to do her make-up and she would have no products to show for it. I have had really great experiences with MAC. They use a full range of products to do your make-up, but don't expect you to buy them all (as long as you buy 50 bucks worth) And they explain each step. Last time I went there I had a huge AH HA! moment regarding eye make-up. It revolutionized the way I do my eyes!

No I don't work for MAC. I just love them.

Avoid VS.  Check.

I'm reasonably certain that her bras don't fit correctly.

Since you're the one with the hellacious experience, what should we look for with a saleswoman that's doing her job right?

I know that the cup size is a ratio, the difference between the over and under of the bust.

But I've also known very differently-endowed women who wore DD cups.

There should be no overflow, and not a lot of space, right?  (forgive the obvious ignorance)

This is a valid point.

However, since she currently has no eye makeup and no idea how to use it, I would consider MAC more of the postgrad course.

The cosmetology school seems to be better for the total newbie, unless we cross paths with a woman who is here and always wanted a little sister to dress up with.
