I'm in this district. It's a very, very nutty snake that runs from the Canadian border to Utica to the edge of Rochester, drawn long ago for Republican purposes to miss large urban areas, stretching across eleven counties. There is no constituency here.

This is the most Conservative part of a very liberal state. But the Republicans were nuts to have people like Newt Gingrich, universally disliked here, to fricking NY. It was a nutty move. The Conservatives aren't proposing anything embracing anything--they're running on the "Oh no watch out gay marriage and abortion" platform.

The Dems at least had the sense to run an Independent--the only way they had a chance at all (and he was narrowly leading until the Republican meltdown).

I don't know what will happen tomorrow. But there's nothing unifying about it--it's being accurately called a Conservative coup. Next redistricting, whatever party is in charge, this will be adjusted, I'm sure.

If Hoffmann wins, he'll have a mess of a time representing a district where 2/3 of the people are concerned about Conservatives taking power, not Conservative principles. And the gay marriage scare, as Karl Rove learned the hard way, only works short term.

I do not understand the question. Why should GOP waste time to duplicate the work as the Democrats came out with 1990 pages of Affordable Health Care for America Act which will solve all the problems?

To understand the question we must start at the beginning....Ours is a two party system.....in a two party system it isn't enough to just oppose the other parties ideas...your suppose to offer an alternative
Of course I'm assuming your being sarcastic but are you suggessting there are no problems with America's health care system?

I already posted the link on the Senate side.

Today on the House side a comprehensive bill will be introduced. Why now? Because Pelosi blocked it until now. 50 individual bills were introduced in the House before today.

Included: tort reform, tearing down the wall between states and high risk pools for pre-existing conditions. The things that might actually do something.

and today the GOP will begin to read the Pelosi bill on the floor. Should be fun...and the CBO tab on that bill is now over 1.2 trillion. Watch Obama do yet another about face on a promise.

Doesn't really matter, both sides are just tinkering with a broken system rather than actually trying to repair it. They don't have the cojones to stand up to the Insurance boys and do the only thing that will fix the system, so why bother presenting any sort of comprehensive plan?

I agree it's a fix piled on a system that evolved for reasons largely irrelevant today. However, the collective will--including the opinions (however perhaps misguided) of the public, not to mention the political climate--just isn't there. Starting over would never pass.

But we also can't continue to do nothing. It's costly, more and more so every year, and will crush our economy left unchecked--and then there's the ethics issue of universal coverage (which comes back to the economic argument, though, as emergency health care for the uninsured costs more than coverage for those cases). Extending coverage, getting more people in the pool, preventing being shut out or dropped even though insured--these are steps we can take that at least improve the situation.

Yes, they'll need to be adjusted later. But in an adversarial system, that's how things happen---vs. not at all.

The Democratic Bill was dead for 2009 according to Ried anyway. Senate majority leader Harry Reid sent a strong signal on Tuesday that President Obama is unlikely to be signing his top domestic priority into law this year, as Democrats had hoped. "We're not going to be bound by timelines," Reid told reporters as he emerged from a weekly lunch with Democratic Senators. He vowed to pass a bill "as expeditiously as we can," which is another way of saying it will probably be slow going over the weeks to come.

He read the polls and may have watched the results even if the White House didn't according to reports. White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told POLITICO President Barack Obama wasn't even keeping an eye on the results. "He's not watching returns," Gibbs said. According to a news report on the local LA station, he was busy looking at a documentary on HBO - about him, and the good old days of campaign rhetoric. (Sorry no written support for that representation, posted yet on-line.)

Pelosi, Ried, are now bunkering for next year's election. There will be no meaningful Health Care reform. Maybe some facade of eligibility and rejection will be written into law but no Bill, especially costing $1.2 Trillion will be voted on by bureaucrats now seeking reelection in 12 months in light of last nights results.

I remember some politician saying "It's the economy stupid!" Promising more taxation to an already overtaxed and wary working public to pay for some grandiose plan committing to another bureaucratic nightmare isn't a reelection platform plank. Not when the current economic stimulus play generates jobs at a tax payer cost of $160,000 per job. I think that's representative of the current state of bureaucratic bloated government programs. Of course the White House doesn't like how the calculator was used, it says so in the link provide. I guess simple math isn't what the White House would like any of us to focus upon; jobs, cost of the health program, or the deficit. Obviously, they don't like to focus on the bottom line.

But talk about a straw man, distraction attempting argument - why focus on a GOP program? No need for GOP input or one vote. The President said so himself a few month's ago. The Democrats and their leaders Pelossi and Reid should just pass it exactly as requested by the White House. What's stopping them except their own party member who know in doing so - their career as bureaucratic lackeys for their special interest paymasters is over twelve months from now.

Does anyone really believe that Mr. Obama didn't watch those election returns ? He campaigned in New Jersey with Corzine 5 times. Biden was there twice and Bill Clinton once. Of course he watched them.

I believe he didn't, he did what he could and prolly got down and got freaky with Michelle last night, it ain't like it ain't gonna be smeared all over the papers and televisions for the next few weeks, and he could always ask somebody on his staff what happened anyway.........

That's pretty simplistic. Among the valid concerns debated is the importance of the public option to several Democrats--an issue their supporters expect them to pursue.

And yes, it complicates the process, especially politically. But the matter has broad popular support, and ignoring it also poses problems.
