If there's no "diety" how can it be a religion?

Wiccans have deities.

Does wiccan count as a proper/official religion then?

Well I never knew that. Cheers!

Buddhism has no deities in the way that most people understand deities.

I still have a soft spot for neopagans.

Happy Samhain.

It's more a philosophy than religion, yes.

However, americanized buddhism has taken its occidental fascination with monotheistic systems to where it somehow identifies "buddha" as a deity. *shrug*

for those in it propably..yes...for the rest it doesn't matter ( untill they try to influence the world outside their religion).

I see it as;
BDSM is normal for those in the lifestyle....while others call us weird and sick.
Nobody should care as long as anyone doesn't do harm to outsiders.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/religion
(no need to invent the meaning of religion again)

I was just pointing out that (I'm fairly certain) it's accepted as a religion in the US while not having an actual deity.

If Buddism has no deity..why is it called afther Buddha? And why do they bow to those cute little fat men.
(just wondering or is this more soemthing they do for tourists)

Always thought he had a similar "role" as Jesus...

And I was just agreeing with you in a somewhat convoluted fashion.

Coz calling it not-really-wanting-to-decide-on-a-figurehead-and-or-diety-thank-you-ism would have looked silly

Buddha-nature isn't an individual but a state of enlightenment. The fat buddha images come from geographical sects that drew connections between buddha and nobility/success. Gautama is pictured as a slender man.

But Buddha was a person not?
(you answered that already).

It is funny to hear it beeing said we have no diety..and still they kinda "worship" him. At least I personally don't see much difference with other religions....besides the followers acting differently.
And that last is ofcourse the most important.

He's not so much a deity as an example to follow. He transcended the normal mortal human realm and achieved enlightenment.

Because Jesus was (supposedly) the son of god, whereas Buddha was just a bloke.

Godlike vs mortal. Jesus wins by TKO, but Buddha doesn't care, coz he's totally chilled about everything

And Jesus wasn't meant to be the same?

I am not religious..so I have no clue. From the outside they look the same.

But thank you for answering.

According to the Christian theology Jesus was divine and the son of God.

Buddha became enlightened. Very different.
