ORIGINAL: RapierFugue I'm kind of in the middle - on the one hand I don't like to see people in emotional and mental anguish, while on the other hand I find her posts boring, repetitive and almost unreadable. I believe it comes down to the way people react. I can understand her need to justify her post considering the way others were to her. People automatically assume that a poster is either a) mentally sound and just stupid or b) capable of handling excessive critique. Sometimes, neither is true. Oh absolutely. Agree 100% on that score. The thing is though, as someone once said; "the internet is a wide-ranging community, and not all its contributors are pleasant" - much as in life, there's a strong element of "if you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen". I don't necessarily agree with that, since I don't believe life can/should only be lived well by the strong or cruel, but you get my point. quote:
ORIGINAL: RapierFugue BUT: fortunately CM gives one the option to block people's posts, so why anyone who gets that wound up doesn't just utilise that function is beyond me. One click, and it's all gone. quote:
ORIGINAL: Darcyandthedark Can't disagree there. I do agree that people complaining often says more about them than it does about the OP, but again it's all individual taste, and in any "room" of several many people the chances of consensus are small. What I do sometimes wince at is people going for the jugular simply for the fun of it. Just because the some people have the ability to deconstruct someone for their entertainment doesn't mean they should. Quite the reverse. I used to do the same myself, not so much here, but on UseNet, where you're pretty much guaranteed an eye-gouging fight within 10 mins of turning up. Sometimes 5 But after a while I began to question what the purpose was in behaving thus, and also what the effect on my own personality was likely to be, longer-term. Put simply, kicking cats for the fun of it is morally wrong. So I desisted. I do still poke fun at people from time to time, but it's rarely meant with any form of genuine malice. quote:
ORIGINAL: RapierFugue I think some people get a kick out of complaining about things. Actually I know they do, coz I do it myself sometimes [1] [1] don't get me started on London Traffic Wardens - we'll be here for a week, and it won't be a good week quote:
ORIGINAL: Darcyandthedark Bwah... but the uniforms can be hot on the right person.... I don't care! They're sub-human scum, and all must die, preferably in painful, unpleasant ways [1] [1] in London you can't tow or clamp a vehicle until it's had a ticket on it for a minimum of 20 mins. So the fuckers have taken to working in teams, one person ticketing, then a tow- or clamp-team following them up the same street, chatting away to them. Recently, at the end of my street, they ticketed a young girl, then started towing her away *2 mins later*(!). The poor girl was in tears, and it was only the intervention of myself and some very large builders, who had witnessed what was going on, that meant they gave her her car back. Left to themselves, they'd have broken the law, put her through hassle, cost and distress (all illegally) and laughed their arses off while doing so. They're scum [2]. Fortunately, when faced with half a dozen large, pissed-off chaps, they had a brief "re-think", then put the car back. The funniest bit was the warden telling me he was going to call the police, which I pissed myself laughing at and said "you're the one breaking the law, so go ahead mate". His face as the truth of that sentence sunk in was a picture. [2] See?! I TOLD you not to get me started [3] [3] for some reason I can't quite get the hang of this embedded formatting, but this'll have to do for now as I'm late for getting down the shops
