Bull shit. Bowing means you are submissive to them. Why not polish his knob while he's down there because thats the implication. You bow to indicate that your head is theirs to lop off or otherwise for them to do with as they please.

If hes your god then bow. If hes a man then you wave to each other to prove your hands are free of weapons then you might shake his hand as a sign of trust, especially if you are the leader of a free people.

Bush shouldn't do it either. They're not gods they're men. If its a Japanese tradition thats fine, however we are not Japanese.

Then you don't understand international protocol.

Bowing in Japanese custom is the same as shaking hands is to us.

Do foreign leaders who come here not honor our custom by shaking hands?  Why should we not honor theirs when traveling to a foreign country?

rulemylife,

you maybe know a little more about the symbolism of this sort of thing than I do, but Bush ducking when shoes were thrown at him, was that bowing (even to the extent of under pressure?)

Curiously,
Ron

Of course its bowing. And bending to tie his shoes anywhere within 500 yards of someone else is bowing too.

Knowing how to bow in Japan might help you while you are traveling. Bowing (ojigi) is a very important custom in Japan. Japanese people bow all the time. Most commonly, they greet each other by bowing instead of handshaking. It is impolite not to return a bow to whoever bowed to you. Japanese people might be uncomfortable with any physical forms of contact although they might be used to shaking hands with westerners.

Bowing has many functions in one. It expresses the feeling of respect, thanking, apologizing, greeting, and so on. It's a convenient and important custom for you to learn. You can bow, when you say, "Thank you", "Sorry", "Hello", "Good bye", "Congratulations", "Excuse me", "Good night", "Good Morning", and more.

Let's begin learning how to bow properly in Japan. Bowing seems simple, but there are different ways of bowing. It depends on the social status or age of the person you bow to. If the person is higher status or older than you are, you should bow deeper and longer. It is polite to bow, bending from your waist. Men usually keep their hands in their sides, and women usually put their hands together on their thighs with their fingers touching. If it is a casual situation, you can bow like nodding. The most frequent bow is a bow of about 15 degrees. You might feel strange to do it, but try to bow in Japan. You will be considered very polite.

That's not how Japanese custom works.  In Japan, a superior will bow to someone he outranks even, though etiquette typically dictates the lower ranked person will bow lower and for longer.  Bowing is a very complex custom in Japan, but it doesn't automatically mean submission at all.

Bush didn't bow in that picture, he showed friendship and mutual respect. He was more affectionate than I am with men, but I don't know the prince or king or whoever he was like Bush did. Bush grew up as an ambassadors son steeped in the traditions of such foreign dignitaries, and he got to know some of them quite well.

Are you a homophobe tazzy? Does that picture bother you?

You bitch and whine about Obama bowing to the Emperor of Japan, using the customs of that country... and correctly too.

Then excuse Bush and his romp through the woods holding hands with the King.

Twist it as you might, i was pointing out the stupidity of your claims, Sanity, as usual.

Obama isnt the first to bow, nor will he be the last. Do some history research before opening your mouth and stuffing that foot in it again.

"...romp through the woods"?

I excuse Bush because its okay with me that he has a close male friend who isn't white...

Do you really hate him for that?

Sanity, try to expand your thinking beyond Idaho.

Japanese Etiquette

In Japan, people greet each other by bowing. A bow ranges from a small nod of the head to a long, 90 degree bend at the waist. If the greeting takes place on tatami floor, people get on their knees in order to bow.

...Shaking hands is uncommon among the Japanese, but again, exceptions are made for foreigners.

Japanese Customs, Etiquette, and Culture

Japanese culture is very different from the American.

All aspects of Japanese life, especially business relations, are governed by strict rules of etiquette.

A foreign business person who is either ignorant of, or insensitive to, Japanese customs and etiquette needlessly jeopardizes his company's prospects in this country.

This might be news to some here, but their etiquette changed some the day they surrendered to us...

It is still customary in business and politics in Japan. However, it isnt in Saudi Arabia between peers, and Barry blew that one as badly as Bush did.

Actually, politics changed a lot on that day. Prior to then the Japanese Emperor was supposed to be God living among us, which is why Americans don't bow in deference to him.

We've proven he's just a man.

Once again, it is shown, point out a concrete act that is an undeniable positive, i.e. doing something about the deficit (and a freeze or 5% reduction in federal government spending) and some will immediately hijack it so they can continue to demonize Obama. He bowed. He sneezed. He had a black mass in the oval office.

Jeez, folks, why not just admit that you'd be happy to see the country fall into ruins rather than have anyone to the left of Dick Cheny in charge?

And you wonder why people make fun of you?
