That's a strange sign for an atheist group to put up. Normally they don't capitalize "god", nor do they refer to that concept in the singular. A more likely atheist sign would be "Don't believe in gods?"

Amateurs! :p

But seriously, it's too bad that somebody thought the sign was badmouthing their version of "god" enough to make threats. How self-centered to assume that it was referring to the specific god that THEY believed in!

I have already stated one possibility. To blame christians for this, without proof, without even the person being threatened stating who or what, is extremely telling at rather bigoted. What christians have been accused of, intolerance and rush to judgements, is what i am seeing on this thread. Shame really. The sign doesnt bother me one bit.

Most people I know that talk about Christianity use the term God..why is that so far out there lol

Ahh I see.

I think she's talking about the intentions of both parties involved but more specifically the ones calling foul.

Thats one possibility. Another could be this is all staged. A third could be that the landowner got some hasseling he didnt expect, the threats may have been more monetary than anything else, and wanted it down, so made this all up. The possibilities are endless.

Very true.

It could also be a true story..People can be very passionate about religion...sometimes to the point of the extreme..

Which does more harm in the long run. Which is sad because some people are chomping at the bit to bash religion any chance they get. I can see a few here already.

It was the OP that blamed the xtians. 

The person threatened told the billboard company renting his land. 

The billboard company told the group that had leased space. 

So no. . . the group that had leased the space on the billboard did NOT know who had made the threats or what exactly they were.

And people can make things up to further their own agendas or protect their wallets. No one presented the christian angle as a possibility... most stated it as a given fact. At least i didnt accuse anyone of anything.

I didn't see anything in the article that implicated any specific group, though it is not unreasonable to assume that, as the threats were levied at the landowner over the content of the sign, which ever individual(s) were involved in making the threats disagreed with said message -- which implies, to me, that the individuals in question were deists of some sort or another, and very attached to enforcing the idea that NOT being a theist was not even a fathomable option... and were willing to threaten another human being to make sure that that message was squelched. No matter who did the doing, it is wrong action, and level of theism is irrelevant. However, there is nothing wrong about evaluating the action, and the circumstance, and highlighting the impropriety of someone being threatened over what should be a simple freedom-of-speech issue, nor is it wrong to consider the situation and speculate on how such a thing might happen, and, in fact, that seems to be a pretty common pastime among humans.

I live in Houston. There are bulletin boards for churches -everywhere- here. I would sincerely hope that, should an a-theist group choose to make -their- presence publicly known, doing so would not incite violence... but I have to be honest, I have my doubts just from the reaction of regular people around me when they discover that my religious path, much like Buddhism, is not a theist path. *shrugs*

Comments made about inappropriate behaviors by -any- group of individuals, and that -includes atheists, buddhists, christians, whatever, must weigh the action, not the group. If something is wrong, it is wrong whether Joe Theist does it or Joe Atheist does it, and expecting people to say nothing, just because the perpetrators are theists rather than atheists... I'm sorry, but that is an unrealistic expectation and brings to light a bias all its own.

Your correct to point out that other religions besides Christianity threaten people who disagree with their faith, but the conspiracy theory is a bit much.

I don't think she's done that at all Calla..What I'm taking from her is that she's just offering other possibilities and asking others not to jump to conclusions. Which is a rational stance.

I never said christians didnt do this... and i agree it is wrong... just as wrong to blame a certain group without any proof. I offered up other possibilities instead of jumping on the most obvious. While it is the most obvious, it certainly isnt the only one.

You're right, Icarys, which is why I had already edited that paragraph, after deciding that my directed comment wasn't really relevant to the discussion, in any case and I took out the directed commentary -- in the end, all of us are responsible for what we say and what we do. I'm not surprised that people got nasty, and I'm not even surprised that some folks got downright vicious... it is a shame, though, and regardless of what the perpetrators were thinking (whether for philosophy or profit), the fact that this can happen in the US, where we make mouth noises in support of freedom of speech, and then do our level best to repress our neighbor with the different ideas as soon as xhe opens hir mouth is a damned shame -- and a staunch reminder that we're not that much better than the baboons in the zoo.
