Stranger things have been known to happen. The all mighty dollar is a bigger threat than God.

The thing is, there isn't any real fiscal advantage to threatening the landowner to force the advertising company into moving the sign. In fact, if it -was- some cockamamie publicity stunt, then they just bit themselves in the ass... The incident got some press, but the press was, by no means, purely beneficial to the groups in question, and frankly, the publicity will make it a lot harder for the group to buy advertising space in the future, since, as it was made public that threats were levied, a large number of advertisers are going to be particularly careful about taking on any advertising that might (a) cost them extra to have to re-print, move, or otherwise alter to minimize the risk to life and property from radical elements and (b) might bring the wrath of the radical elements down on the advertising company directly.

You're right, Icarys, which is why I had already edited that paragraph, after deciding that my directed comment wasn't really relevant to the discussion, in any case and I took out the directed commentary -- in the end, all of us are responsible for what we say and what we do. I'm not surprised that people got nasty, and I'm not even surprised that some folks got downright vicious... it is a shame, though, and regardless of what the perpetrators were thinking (whether for philosophy or profit), the fact that this can happen in the US, where we make mouth noises in support of freedom of speech, and then do our level best to repress our neighbor with the different ideas as soon as xhe opens hir mouth is a damned shame -- and a staunch reminder that we're not that much better than the baboons in the zoo.

From what I've read..You've always been a voice of reason as far as I'm concerned

My panties are just fine, Calla. I was taught assumptions are a terrible thing. Jumping to conclusions can do more damage than anything else.

Enjoy your evening.

So, some guy using a name that means God-killing (or god-killing, if you prefer) starts a thread entitled "Christians threaten violence," to highlight a story in which threats by unknown persons are reported. Nice irony.

Our man "Deicide" ("no profile found") didn't want to his regular name attached to this bit of work,  and that's certainly understandable.

exactly... lol. seems like there really isnt that dire a threat out there if he is willing to take on the risk for himself and not disclose what the threats are or who they are coming from. some people are so anti-christian that they cant see beyond that word to the possibility of other intentions.

I agree... It is a hoax.  Can you contact Lamar?  I will be your character witness when this thing goes to trial.

tazzygirl -> RE: Christians threaten violence...big surprise (11/14/2009 11:13:10 PM)

lol... your silly!

i cant prove its a hoax.. nor can anyone here prove it was a christain effort to get it removed.

NihilusZero -> RE: Christians threaten violence...big surprise (11/14/2009 11:24:03 PM)

Well, we can be fair then and reword the title: "Modern-day Abrahamic-religion theists threaten violence."

tazzygirl -> RE: Christians threaten violence...big surprise (11/14/2009 11:39:12 PM)

Your proof it was a theist?

at the moment. yes... lol... tomorrow they may actually fess up to who and what was said. until then, we have no proof of what truly happened.

again, assumptions should not be made. if the possibility is reasonable... then you can suggest the possibility or the probability. Its like saying a man is guilty of murder because he is holding the gun. the assumption is reasonable... but ya gotta prove it first.

Like proving the moon was not in fact made of cheese before the Apollo 11 mission, right?

No one but the OP(and 2-3 other people on this forum) thinks otherwise.  To me it appears to be an attack on non-theism.  Until there is sufficient evidence to suggest this is not the case there is no reason we should not believe it.

You did imply 2 times it was a hoax - or was it only once?  Now you are suggesting you can not prove it?  I am confused, tizzy.  I can beg forgiveness later if you never suggested it was a hoax.

NihilusZero -> RE: Christians threaten violence...big surprise (11/15/2009 12:16:05 AM)

You know, I think I've recanted. It makes just as much sense that it be the work of a small group of cosmic-alien-possessed, poodle-owning,  Zimbabwe gay mafia members.

I do not see how any of this is important?  Threats of violence were made against a land owner because an atheist sign was legally placed on his property.  Further more he was not responsible or connected with the sign - correct?.  If it was a hoax there is a serious problem.  If it was not there is a more serious problem(regardless of it was a christian or not).

Something is fuk'd up here is all I am sayin.  By the way the we do not know what the moon is made of as the moon landing was a complex hoax.

Esinn -> RE: Christians threaten violence...big surprise (11/15/2009 12:32:16 AM)

If I may add christianity does have a well established history of killing people who disagree with them.  It is also a well established fact many christians to one degree or another dislike atheists.  These signa and bus campaigns have been around for over a year now. The vast majority of the time it is christians who desire to have them torn down, organize against them or otherwise take action(google atheist bus campaign) - I have ran across numerous threats on forum as well,.  Although the sign said, "god" we know it mostly implies the christian god as in god we trust on money or license plates assumes the same.  Logically speaking it might be reasonable for christians to view this as a direct attack.  We also know it is highly likely the vast majority of people in that state/part of town who are theist(would take offense to such a message) are christian.

I have never read any news articles, stories, reports or posts about atheists threatening to kill people if they did not stop being theist.  However, I do know of christians killing people because person "X" was not christian, did not accept the religion or was otherwise somehow sinful.
