I think it depends on your relationship with the person. If you are in a monogamous lifelong relationship with the person you collar, then I would view it as being equal to a wedding ring--denoting a true-love soul-mate relationship alibit one with a BDSM focus. However, in many cases, I would look at a collar as something rather like a friendship bracelet or ring. It represents a deep and abiding love as powerful as but different than the romantic/sexual love between life partners. I have a good friend who has two collared slaves but also has a (I believe vanilla) fiance and one of the slaves is also married. In this case, the collar is obviously not equal to the wedding ring but, as she and her slaves have maintained their relationship for many years, it is obviously nothing to sneeze at.
