My biggest challenge every day is this time of night.  I always want to eat a little something before bed.  For years, I have gotten ready for bed, taken my meds, climbed into bed, opened my book & eaten some form of chocolate.  I have gone to bed hungry every single night this week.  I keep thinking that it will get easier, but it just doesn't.  It does help that the kitchen's on the 2nd floor & I'm on the 4th floor with at least 32 steps down & 32 back up.  And I know that ain't far enough to work off whatever it is that I will eat when I get down there.  And so, I'm off to bed tonight, hungry again.  *sigh*

Linna..i am wondering about the difference between hunger and habit here. Habits are a bitch to break, but they are breakable. The average habit takes two weeks to die down (or so i am told) so it will get easier.

Holly, you are undoubtedly right.  I don't always perceive hunger appropriately.  There are times that I don't realize that I'm hungry until I feel a headache or grumpiness & then I'll realize that I haven't eaten for 7 hours.  So it's certainly conceivable that I would feel hungry when I'm actually not.  My excuse has always been that I'm supposed to eat with my night-night med, so a couple of squares of good dark chocolate has been my choice for eating at that time of day.

Hi folks, iam an avid season watcher, as i have said before i cheer on the contestants etc. However, there is a BIG concept that the show especially recently advocates which is a VERY SIMPLE concept in and of itself that i thought i would share here:

CHANGE YOUR MIND

This simple statement is very easily overlooked when hearing but it really slammed into me when during the show this year, Shay, the shows most heaviest PERSON at 475, was working out with Jillian on the climb to hell (my title lol not the shows) machine which was basically moving stairs which you sorta crawl up. Shay kept saying she couldn't do it, she had to stop etc with of course our lovable Jillian screaming at her to do it do it as only Jillian can. Finally, Shay ended up in a heap at the bottom of the machine pretty much in tears, out of breath and saying along the lines of she couldn't do anymore. Jillian got down next to her and slammed her hand into the floor and yelled --- THEN CHANGE YOUR MIND! Choose to do more, change your mind that you can do it.

That statement is a very empowering statement and seems to be the most powerful theme of the seasons yet. Its all about choosing to change your mind, on small levels on huge levels, on levels you never even knew existed to send you flying over the barrier and obstacle that is nothing more than -- yourself.

So when you toast the holidays, your family, your friends, the new year and whatever else you toast -- be sure to toast yourself and the fact that you CAN change your mind. No matter what it is -- you can change your mind.

Just a little blurb that i hope will resinate in some of you to help you make the good choices while you participate in this thread and what it represents.

angel

We all have habits that need changing. Mine is the honey bun in the morning for breakfast. Not to mention the cordial cherries and creme drops for the season. Mom said no more after Xmas and I am all for that.

But then I have a craving for chocolate and I want some right NOW. Thank goodness we live in the boondocks and we are not going to go 4 miles for a simple candy bar. That is a waste of time and money.

We joined Curves because of Danny on TBL. I never seen a man change his life for the better like he did. Mom recently retired and she is showing extra weight because she has nothing to do. She will say that I made her join. I say that the challenge on here made me join. But we both need to lose weight and get ourselves slimmer is worth it. But being 265 at the doctors' office threw me through a loop. I cannot blame the breasts anymore. I cannot blame any outside factors anymore. I have to blame myself for not watching what I eat and not getting off of my lazy ass and doiing something. There is only me to blame.

ShaharThorne, its great what you are doing, i see you post regarding same and its an excellent changing of your mind and getting it done. You are now making changes to rectify those choices that got you where you are today, so a not so great journey is ending and your new direction and journey is beginning and you are taking ahold of it and making it stay on track and moving forward. Its really great hearing from you about the changes you are making.

Its funny when you sit and really look at what you do -- you being general as in all of us -- you see the little bits and pieces of choices you have made that have become something you rely on to maintain normalcy in your day -- i.e., for you its the honeybun, for me its my white chocolate peppermint mocha on the way to work. For me, i am not sure if its the same for you, but my mind is of the fact that if i don't get this every morning on the way to work, my day has started off WRONG!! So i am sure you can see how i have trained myself to have a really negative effect of my WHOLE day all because of a habit i created that i taught myself to rely upon.

Its hard when i am driving to work to NOT go straight and instead to turn onto the expressway, but every day its a choice i have to make and retrain myself that its not a good or bad thing, its simply a white chocolate pepppermint mocha. It is a challenge and every day i have to still talk myself through the fact that having it or not does NOT effect my day in any way.

I have been meaning to say it soo Good Job in your determination you are showing. Keep it up!

angel

I lost 4 pounds this weekend. I was naughty. But oh so nice too.

I couldn't believe the scale when I it read 224, after a hearty breakfast no less. The diet I am not officially on, is working nicely.

Earlier today, my sister was mixing up the dough for my favorite chocolate Christmas cookies while I cleaned up after her.  We got to talking about a lot of different things.  One thing I told her was that the Christmas that I was on Jenny Craig many years ago, I lost 7 lbs during the holiday week & that was the Christmas that I wouldn't allow myself even one of those cookies.  She scoffed & said, "One wouldn't hurt you!!"  I said, "Yes it would have.  It would have set off a craving.  Just like I can't have one drink of alcohol."  She understood when I put it that way.

Another subject was how I had worked so very hard to come back after being run over by a car & having 8 fractures, including my patella, my pelvis & my sacrum.  That every day, I would exercise & walk & go to dance classes & aquacise & cry while I was doing all that because it hurt so bad, but I just kept doing it because I didn't want to be crippled.  She quietly said, "Now take that determination & use it on other things."  And she's right.  Because I don't have that extremity of pain today, I forget that I need to be that determined to lose this weight, to get up every day & exercise & curb my food intake.

Today, we went to a Louisiana restaurant & had beignets for an appetizer.  I took one & ate about a third of it & stopped!!  I ate only 1/2 biscuit instead of a whole one.  And I left rice & potatoes on my plate.  Felt damn good!!!!!

Yay Linnea!

Angel's "change your mind" post up there hit me in the head.  I haven't felt great the last few days so I didn't want to get up and go.... But I changed my mind and went.  Burnt up nearly 800 calories and I feel much better.  I'm sweaty and icky, but it is good!

best,
sunshine

Can I just say: all of the wonderful, inspiring posts I've read here in the last few days have really made Me feel good about Myself in My own personal purpose, as well as about starting this particular thread (My first ever, btw..). I am so very proud and happy to know all of you and to be part and parcel of such a great online community of fellowship and support - makes a body wonder why anyone bothers with all the negativity on the boards at all. Bravisse to each and every one of you, and Goddess bless. XO
P.S. hey Linnaea, what's a beignet?

OMG... what is a beignet? What is a beignet??? Only a bit of a square of lightly-spiced dough, fried into a tasty pillow right before they're handed to you in a little basket, all sprinkled with powered sugar and served, steaming hot, with honey. They are nearly criminal, properly made. The insides are super hot and chewy... the outsides (especially the corners) are super crisp. They're like donuts, only better.

Of course, they're no longer on my menu... but I still walk past the beignet shop just to smell them cooking.

And they are a wonderful treat that I've always gotten in New Orleans (with a cup of chicory coffee).  I prefer no powdered sugar, but lordy lordy ... they are good!

Calla, your post reminded me of the real ones in New Orleans that I used to get there & the ones today weren't nearly that wonderful.  Thank the Lord!!!

I helped with cleaning up & baking & I made dinner again tonight.  I made a bacon, smoked salmon & goat cheese frittata, served with fresh greens & herbs.  And I heated up the leftover risotto my sister had made the other night & the leftover pesto pasta from last night.  And my sister made what she likes to call Purple Toxic Waste.  It's sweet & sour red cabbage with apples in it.  My brother-in-law & I love it!!!

All in all a very good day, in spite of the fact that my arthritis is hurting so bad that I feel like finding somewhere to score some drugs.  But I will just take Tylenol.

You just have to mention beignets...my favorite treat when I was living in N.O. after the bitch Katrina hit it.

That and the pecan pralines...

N.O. was not a heathy diet for me, but then I was enjoying every minute of it, especially the leather!

Sorry about the beignet mention.  Here's my good news:

After I got to my sister's the end of October, I bought an interview pantsuit.  I just tried the pants on for my interview today & they're about 2" too big around the waist!!!  I feel like I need suspenders.  LOL  I love this tangible proof that what I'm doing is working.  Wheeeeee!!!!!
