Psssssttttt!!!!! Hey!!!!! Hey!!!!!!!! C'mere all you fluffy, happy people.

ARE YOU EATING ENOUGH?

That's right! Enough! Guess what lovelies! If you are a big boy or girl, you need to be eating like you mean it. It is amazing how many of us are actually here because we have become so worried about and self conscious about eating that we are literally forcing our bodies in to starvation mode and STORING every little calorie we DO eat. That's right! The first idiot doctor that wants to put a reasonably healthy, 250-300 pound man or woman on a 1500 calorie diet needs to die. The daily maintenience need for a person of this size is around 3000 calories. Dropping 1000 calories is considered a pretty extreme drop and anything further would need RIGOROUS medical monitoring which the morons typically aren't going to bother to provide. Your calories needs will go down over time as you drop the excess weight, so find a good tool to estimate your calorie needs and remember to recheck after a loss of 20 lbs or more. Yup! You heard it here! I will be the fat chick sitting in the restaurant with a very healthy yet very AMPLE meal in front of her. [:D]

And if you want to drop weight faster or more easily, it is exercise that's going to get you there. May I highly recommend the water? Treading water vigorously (fast movements and no cheating by touching bottom!) for an hour for the above mentioned sized woman will burn around 1200 calories!!! It is also easier on the joints, more comfortable, and works more muscle groups simultaneously than land exercise. The number of calories expended in the same amount of time decrease as you lose as well, so again, find a good calculation program and recalculate after every loss of 20 lbs or more.

Good luck peeps! I haven't started yet because of my devious cold or whatever it is that won't go away and stay away. When I do, however, look out!

I got to the gym for the first time in a long time. Took of 800 calories according to the Precor exercise equipment company. Unfortunately did not eat well. It's a start. I weighed in at 213.4 tonight.

Does anyone know if one time is better than another to weigh one's self?

lovingpet -> RE: The CollarMe "Biggest Loser" Gang WANTS YOU!!1! (1/16/2010 9:37:55 PM)

In the morning after you do your....uhhhhh.... business. [:D]

Please be careful about believing these machines about how many calories you're burning. You'd be surprised how few you do actually burn even at an accelerated pace for quite a long time.

The good news is...moving, exercising, and just getting in shape is more important than burning a certain number of calories!

It doesn't matter what time of day you weigh yourself as long as it's around the same time of day each time.  You will generally weigh less in the morning.  If you always weigh in at 5pm, it will give you an accurate reading of the weight you are losing, however.

foolishguy -> RE: The CollarMe "Biggest Loser" Gang WANTS YOU!!1! (1/17/2010 9:51:44 AM)

Thanks for the advice, everybody. Why 5pm?

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: The CollarMe "Biggest Loser" Gang WANTS YOU!!1! (1/17/2010 9:54:07 AM)

Just a random time.  What I meant was that if you weigh always at the same time of day, that will tell you if you are losing or not.

This is absolutely true. I couldn't imagine how much time the other poster had spent on that machine to rack up all that calorie burn. Land exercise is notoriously inefficient. It is what most people can either manage or prefer, but it is a lot of time and hard work invested to get a high burn load for the day. Just getting moving and getting muscle tone is far more important, however, no matter what calories one is using up.

One thing that should be mention is High Frustuce(?) Corn Syrup. Its time to begin the label reading folks. HFCS is a sweetner found in several foods. I just discovered it on the cola that I am drinking (trying to get all sodas out of the house as part of our regime for dieting). When we go grocery shopping next time, I am checkiing the cereal boxes (I know the new Chocolate Cheerios has corn syrup).

Linn, do you have any information about the artifical sweetners? You mention something about them but I think you were busy at that moment.

There is a HFCS thread over in the Politics and Religions forum. Don''t feel afraid to add your voice on that thread...diet tips on how to avoid HFCS would be appreciated.

lovingpet -> RE: The CollarMe "Biggest Loser" Gang WANTS YOU!!1! (1/17/2010 2:14:50 PM)

Well, Shahar, I avoid HFCS the same way I do a lot of thing. I stay away from "prepared" foods as much as possible. I buy raw meat, raw fruits and vegetables, whole grain flours, etc and make my food from the ground up. If it's canned or box, bottled, or jarred, packaged or bagged, count on it being loaded with all kinds of things you simply do not want in your diet.

As far as artificial sweetners goes, I can't use them and didn't exactly think they were such a great idea when I was consuming them pretty much on a daily basis. You are far better off with a little sugar or honey (and the calories from them) than to mess around with these biochemical nightmares. There is quite a bit out there you can look up about the neurotoxicity associated with them. Further, the body mistakes them for sugar and reacts with the extreme blood sugar spike only when you crash you come in even worse because the sugar was not available to your body after all. A lot of references for diabetics can tell you all about the blood sugar issues. Everything in moderation. If you are stingy in your sugar intake, it isn't going to be the problem that unchecked intake is. Oh, and a word on honey. It provides a natural stabilization effect because there is some protein content to it. Also, if you go out and find LOCAL honey to use, if started early enough like NOW, it can help at least partially alleviate springtime allergies and then perpetually year round with continued use.

My rule of thumb is simple. The further away it is from the way I would find it in the wild, the less likely I want to eat it and the worse it will be for me if I do. It streamlines grocery shopping in a real hurry! LOL

It isn't just high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) that is the issue -- it is sugars and starches in all their forms. In the end, they all break down to sugar at high levels. Sticking to foods with a glycemic index of less than 30 for most of your food, with the occasional foray into foods of a glycemic index in the "moderate" range (trying to stick to the 40 to 60 range, rather than the higher end), will assure that the body's insulin-sparing mechanisms are not triggered.

Did all y'all know that the human body, when it has 'normal' blood sugar, only has a little less than a -teaspoon- of sugar in the bloodstream? Also, our body has the ability to -make- glucose from protein that we consume, if it needs more.

Choosing unprocessed foods, starting with meats, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds, and preparing yourself (even as simply as a 10-minute basic sauteed or broiled meat and salad) is a great place to start.

Oh... and if you get a chance, you may want to see if you can rent a copy of Fat Head: The Movie. I know Netflix has it and it provides some valuable food for thought. (pardon the pun).

Ok, so I've been doing so well -- down over 50 lbs from my starting point, and today, I looked in the mirror and realized that I have a -shape-... like... an hourglass shape...

What is even better is that my "idea crucible" is running full steam. I'm starting a year-long experiment. I'm not going to share a lot of details right now, because I don't want to jinx it, but it's more than just diet and exercise--it will encompass every aspect of my life, from how I eat to the building and community in which I live, to how I express my creative energy... and seeing how the changes I'm contemplating are going to impact me as a total human being. After 6 months, my son will be joining me in all the different aspects of what I'm doing, to see whether things flow differently with a newly-adult, still developing young male.

Anyway, I'll keep all y'all posted!

Calla

Hey Calla, Congratulations!!!!!!  Whooo Hooo!!!!!!

I'd like to know more about your plans!!

foolishguy -> RE: The CollarMe "Biggest Loser" Gang WANTS YOU!!1! (1/18/2010 6:32:57 AM)

Weighed in at 213.2  but that is kind of a lie because I switched to weighing myself in the morning. I did that because yesterday was not a good day. My excuse is the playoffs were on. It's still just an excuse.

ShaharThorne -> RE: The CollarMe "Biggest Loser" Gang WANTS YOU!!1! (1/18/2010 6:58:35 AM)

Jump up and down is a good exercise while its the playoffs...I did that Saturday while watching the Saints Saturday and yesterday when the Vikings beat the Cowboys. I just wish that hollering was exercise as well.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: The CollarMe "Biggest Loser" Gang WANTS YOU!!1! (1/18/2010 9:50:05 AM)

I'm sure that hollering burns calories, just as laughing does.  So it counts for something. [8D]

ETA:  It's probably not a good idea to weigh yourself everyday, foolishguy.  Once a week should give you a better idea of how you're doing.  It's very easy to get obsessed with the number on the scale.  Weight can fluctuate on a daily basis by +/-2 lbs.  Focus on how your clothes are fitting & how you are feeling.

ShaharThorne -> RE: The CollarMe "Biggest Loser" Gang WANTS YOU!!1! (1/18/2010 2:04:13 PM)

Plus shoes do tend to be 2 pounds. YMMV...
