Just a little trivia i have heard -- if you are trying to lose weight, this tends to stall and even plateau some people.

ShaharThorne, honestly, i think instead of trying to do all of this stuff like getting rid of HFCS etc -- especially when you have family members who this would cause irritation too, maybe you should just concentrate on eating non-processed food and eating cleanly.

Do you have your eating plan set yet? I mean until you start and follow the basics, none of the technical concepts such as HFCS or such is going to help. You need to get your food plan focused and followed. Once you have that THEN you start looking at the techincal concepts.

Yes, there are bad things out there but until you start eating right and moving, instead of making excuses why you can't or don't or blaming it on others (i.e., mom or bo, or the kid) its all just what can be considered a fad for you.

You may not like hearing this but you complain a lot about your weight and gaining and such but i don't think you really are yet in the focus and mindset to actually accomplish the goal. Change your mind and make the decision, many many many people do lose weight who have families who don't eat as they do. It simply takes effort and focus. When you find that you seriously will see this is much easier.

IF you mom wants to lose weight she is going to have to do the work for herself.

You --anyone-- who takes on this type of goal achievement it really does take a lot of focus and determination but also in the end -- you have to REALLYY want too, enough where you have made the determination to make BIG changes in your life and the way you look at things.

I am a big TBL fan as many know -- i realize some people have issues with the show, but tonight is a night that can really be inspirational for people -- its MAKEOVER night. One thing many people forget when they are focused on losing weight is to become familiar with the new them. They still see the same person they were 25-50-75-100 pounds ago.

I wanted to let everyone know this because to me i love looking at before and after pics and seeing the old versus new person people become. Its inspirational and motivational but also, if you have lost weight, its a reminder to stop and say hello to the new person in the mirror and get to know her or him. 15 lbs usually is a concept of a size lost. Therefore, remember to buy yourself something new to wear, do your hair differently, put make up on if you don't usually wear it, take it off if you always wear it etc. DO something different and then look in the mirror and say hello. You deserve to and tell her or him -- good job and welcome to my life. (well your life but you get my meaning).

Its on NBC and starts at 7 central.

What I did when I decided that I had to lose weight was to take baby steps.  First I cut out cheeses, dressings & HFCS.  The whole eating plan evolved from there.  And I don't really have an eating plan, per se.  I just know what's good to eat & what's not.  And I eat less of everything than I used to.  I don't count calories or carbs or anything much really.  I just eat less & move more.  When I get stalled, I don't fret.  I eat a little less, a little more fiber, or some such, move a little more & eventually the numbers come down again.  If I decide to eat something not so healthy, I don't beat myself up.  One piece of cake won't make me fat again.

So start wherever you are comfortable starting.  Cut out whatever you think that you should.  If it works, great!!  Keep going.  If it doesn't work, try something else.  Losing weight really does come down to eating less & moving more, no matter what plan you're following.

i agree with angel and linea.
its been very hard and though im not very structured as yet i made a decision to cut back and move.
i am going to the ymca and in a seniors class twice a week.
everyone has to begin somewhere and after years of complacency i finally took some advise, accepted help and support and even criticism

excuses can be made til we are buried with them or we can look at examples and try to follow them!!!

Linea, i am not sure if you realize this but i also have lost 50 lbs. Why would you, i don't usually mention it. And i have not eaten less. I average about 1800- 2000 calories a day but i don't count cals. I can't eat less because my body gets hungry. However, i also don't MOVE more as i should nor have i given up my pop like i should. But i still lost 50 lbs since January actually 56 if you want me to be accurate. Not as much as i could have if i would have focused and given up my pop and quit making excuses in why i wasn't exercising.

I have to plan, i have to organize, i have to have an idea of what i am eating. I have to remain focused on HOW i eat, not just eating less of what i want to eat.

i disagree that what losing weight is is eating LESS and moving more for most. As you have shown it works for you. However, for most, it does not for many different reasons as there is individuals. I do agree that the key to losing weight is burning more calories than you intake. But that is different from eat less, move more. I agree people have to move. You can also get your body burning calories so even if you don't get to move more for whatever reason -- sick, injury, hectic day etc, your body will still burn calories for you. You can do this a couple different ways -- eat less and less to compensate for not moving which means if you do lose weight it will be muscle its burning not fat, or your body will go into starvation mode and your body will horde weight or you can bump up your muscle mass (always remember to get your weights in when you are losing weight and build that muscle) or you can eat in a way where your body will use what you eat. For example, my plan allows me to eat good fat, if i don't do this my body doesn't burn the fat correctly. Same with protein. My body doesn't do well with a lot of bad carbs and when i eat same even if i eat less of them, it hinders my body in losing weight.

Just a bit of trivia,

angel

I understand what you're sayuing, Angel. Mom is on this health kick with me, but she is in FL until Saturday, so I cannot go to Curves this week. Mom is my driver because I am prone to seizures (mainly petit mal)

Breakfast is usually a banana and a bowl of cereal. Yogurt for snacks. PB sandwiches for lunch. Dinner is our main meal and I get the pre-prepared salads with 5 lettuces or the veggies lovers. It depends on what Mom wants to eat (sometimes lean steak with baked potatoe). We have been walking more on top of the workouts at Curves.

Doctor wants me on a low-fat, low-sodium diet. I am trying to intergrate it it with the South Beach diet. We get the sandpaper snack bars for Slimfast. I try to snack on trail mixes as well, so I won't feel so hungry I got this book today that deals with the blood sugar levels for diabetic patients.

We are trying to do everything right but there is something not right here. I am trying to examine everything piece by piece. I take fish oil capsules 2 times a day, Calcium with Vitamin D for my bones, my usual pills about 9pm. I want a copy of the study that shows how asptrame affects mood disorder patients. For my nighttime snack, I have a 40 calorie fudgsicle. I am no longer on the thyroid meds so we have to see if my weight will go down (the weight gain started when I started taking them).

Even my doctor is going WTF is this shit? Can't drink flavored water (the grape flavor has sodium hidden in it), can't drink diet sodas, sugar is not allowed. Have to do breathing treatments because of the pneumonia, have to endure bloodwork each month. No wonder my blood vessels are collapsing. Its bad enough seeing the dentist once a month for an extraction or a filling.

I am trying my damnest to get healthy. I am trying to push the right buttons but something is cogging up the system. I got an appointment next Monday with a colonrectal specialist because of the bleeding.

Just put me in a handbasket...

`Chuckles, nahh, you don't need a handbasket yet.

The low sodium is goinng to be hard because yeah everything has sodium in it it appears. Make sure you check the trail mix and the snack bars they usually are very high in sodium. Maybe ask your doc if those would be better than say ONE serving (about 10-12) lol not a whole bag of unsalted almonds. I have to package my almonds out into small baggies or else i will eat allThis may not seem like a lot but it is and will give you what you need to hold you over until your meal. I thought your doc said your blood sugar levels are good? Why is he cutting out all sugar? The thing is you have a lot of issues. Its hard which means you will need to be extra diligent.

Its good to educate yourself but be careful you don't try and get it all at once. Give yourself some time to absorb what you are reading. Because on many levels it all does come together wherein it starts connecting and you get little ah ha moments. Those connections are very important. Also remember that many times things effect people differently. You can test things yourself -- for example, stop drinking asparatame for say a week, after about 3 days your body will have gotten rid of same and adjusted to not having what you usually have. If you are fine without it then maintain that but if you are like me, you may find yourself slipping back into it when you do acknowledge it to yourself so you can really keep an eye out for how your body is feeling when you start using it again. That in and of itself will help you more than a study, if that makes sense. Because while studies are good for giving you an idea of what it will do -- your own knowledge of your body will be even better.

Unless you start eating completely clean -- meaning unprocessed you are going to have a hard time finding items that are low fat with no sugar added.

What exactly is about South Beach that has you wanting to integrate the low fat, low sodium with it? Did the doc say how low of fat he wants you to go? Are you taking the fish oil for what?

That's why maybe instead of trying to use bits and pieces here and there and trying to absorb all type of information, start back at the beginning and go back to the basics.

You know two things -- low fat and low sodium. You know no flavor water, no soda. That's enough no's lol.

What can you have -- write it down give yourself a list of stuff you can have. You can have veggies, you can have some fruit, you can have lean meats, you can have no sugar. That's a lot of stuff you can have. If you can, shop the perimeter of the store which will be the focus of what you are buying. processed food is usually very high in sodium. If you have things you like but may not think you can have it, there may be a substitute for it. For example, turnips when fried or fake fried taste like french fries. Mixing ground beef with shredded chicken will cut back on the fat in the hamburger because you are using less and you really can't taste the difference (i can't with chicken, turkey i can). SPICES are you friends! When you are eating low fat make the most of your fat be GOOD fat. If you are making cubed meat, split whatever meat it is with chicken.

Its going to take work and education and learning your body. Its not a race, just start back at the beginning. Figure out what you know, figure out what you know works for you, and move on from there. Always be painfully honest with yourself when you fuck up, and instead of coming down on you, simply figure out what you will do differently next time.

You have something to focus on -- low fat and low sodium, now its up to you to figure out what it means with regard to what you can have. That will be 80% of fight so to speak.

You will be okay, it will happen. Just takes tweaking and yes, many times it takes experimentation until you find what works and then you will need to change your lifestyle.

angel

He has me on fish oil for my triglcerides. My overall cholesterol is 192. I take 1200mg 2 times a day (if I can remember to take the morning pill). When I am in austin, I walk everywhere if it is less than a mile I do take the bus which is about a mile away from the apartment (hilly slopes). I am trying to finish off the Special K because there is an abs workout dvd in the box... My feet and ankles are still swollen and I have been drinking water (gallon a day). I do take a water pill to help with the swelling so the pathway from the computer desk to the bathroom is worn out. I am wearing canvas slip-ons and you can see the swelling and purple botches.

I am recovering from the staph infection pretty well, just need to exfloriate the skin now. I hope there is no scar tissue.

A while ago I started “working out” again. Since then I lost 2 inches off my waist. Now, sit ups, crunches, push ups, biking and swimming aren't really “working out” compared to goingto the gym. They are calisthenics, more or less like maintenance. So I stepped it up a notch today in anticipation of joining the gym and pumping iron soon. OUCH that hurt! Who stole my strength... where did it go? I used to bench 310... but now I can barely do 1 simple marshal arts push up. How does that happen?

I stood in front of the mirror. Instead of the usual, like admiring how handsome I am or being stunned by my own manliness when I see the penisaurus, I took a really good look at my arms in the mirror. Sure enough, I have lost muscle mass. So, at my ripe old age in my 50s, I am going to go all military mode and see if I can get 18 .5 inch biceps again. Don't wish me luck, it's loose/loose situation. It's gonna' hurt whether I succeed or not!

Last night was class so no workout & a quick bowl of granola cereal w/skim milk beforehand.
Tonight I'll be back in the gym. No track tonight but I will be on the treadmill & do strength training.
Someone saw me sitting in a chair last week & said that my face looked "thinner" & she could tell I was slimming down. Why couldn't it have been my waist????

A friend of mine recommended a website that helps you track your food and calories burned from exercise.  I don't know if anyone has mentioned it in this thead and I don't feel like digging through 70 pages to check so, if it has, sorry for the duplicate.

The URL is www.myfitnesspal.com and the site is free to use.  It doesn't generate a lot of spam and there's a message board for tips and support.  My ID is sylvereapleanan so if anyone signs up, feel free to friend me.
