ORIGINAL: SimonSekeira It would be quite awful indeed, but for how many people would it be the truth? How many other people at 49 don't have a journal that says "woke, work, ate, slept" for the first entry and "ditto" for the next ten thousand? If you have 49 years worth of really living, then you should be quite proud, for you're an exception and not the standard. It's not the length of your life that matters, it's the density of it. Woke, work, ate, slept. That sounds like a foreign-language translation of my fiance's journal. He'd write it more like - Woke up, went to work at the small internet security startup I've seen grow over the past few years, spent 8 hours solving problems that are essential to making sure internet banking is not only stable, but progressing as well, spent another hour or two in overtime fixing the mistakes of my predecessors and stabilizing what we do so we can move forward, came home tired but proud I'm able to provide for my woman, lay down in bed and relaxed while my fiance cooked me a wonderful dinner, spent hours in bed talking with her and playing computer games together, then curled up and fell asleep content with my future wife in my arms. My fiance isn't rich or famous, but he's a brilliant man, incredibly talented at his work, a strong provider and I know he's going to make a wonderful husband. People have this misconception that "really living" involves some type of extreme event like travel or partying or making a lot of money...but really "really living" is building a life for yourself that makes you happy. That's what we're doing, and honestly I consider myself 'really living' more than people I know who, say, party and hitchhike across the continent but still feel empty inside.
