DedicatedDom40 -> Fox News anchors dumbing down for their audience (12/9/2009 4:31:11 PM)

Jon Stewart had a funny piece showcasing how Fox News anchors are hiding their elite educations and are pretending to be dumber than they are to connect with their tea party audiences.

Considering the people who buy into their bullshit, it makes sense.

Bright people are watching CNN and they are learning a lot (about T. Woods affairs, somebody imprisoned in Italy , what Magic Johnson thinks about unemployment and so on).

What's wrong? Conspiracy theories take up so much room in your head you can't think up something original to say?

There's a world of difference between acknowledging fox news' biased bullshit and the over-abundance of lunatic crap you post about.

Loki, have you ever watched MSNBC or any of the "network" "news" shows?

I'm pretty sure you know exactly who she is, and the reason we should care is we have a vast audience of Fox News viewers who are now convinced that an unbiased poll adds up to 120%.

Interesting that you brought that up, because while CNN and the other networks were reporting other news, with only the briefest mention of the Tiger Woods incident, Fox devoted practically two whole days to cover that "breaking story".

The funniest part though was when they interviewed the National Enquirer editor who published the story about Woods' alleged extra-marital affair and then complimented him and the Enquirer for always getting the story right.

Only on Fox would you hear National Enquirer and journalistic integrity in the same sentence.

Why should we care? Because John Kerry, Gretchen Carlson, and Bill O'reilly are elitists but Bill and Gretch and other Fox hosts dumb themselves down in order to connect with an audience that sees intellect as an elitist flaw; so a moron puppet like W can get his dumb ass elected and the rich get richer and more war with no public option.

Jon Stewart Calls Out Gretchen Carlson For "Dumbing Herself Down" (VIDEO)

Jon Stewart went after "Fox & Friends" host Gretchen Carlson last night. Saying she plays the "troubled mom, just trying to make sense of this modern country," Stewart explained Carlson seems to be dumbing herself down in order to connect with an audience that sees intellect as an elitist flaw.

After showing clips of Carlson talking about Googling the words "ignoramus" and "czar," Stewart was flabbergasted:

How do you get a job on television if you appear to be one of those people who need to pin their address to their coat so a stranger can help them find their way home?

Determined to get to the bottom of it, Stewart conducted a Google search of his own. According to his findings, this "troubled mom" is a graduate of Stanford and a classically trained violinist. With this in mind, Stewart challenged Carlson: "I don't want to have to turn you on tomorrow to see you're actually surprised that the Interior Secretary is in charge of the outside stuff."

LadyEllen -> RE: Fox News anchors dumbing down for their audience (12/10/2009 8:00:31 AM)

Commercial TV really is a simple business; what is most important is to attract the highest numbers of viewers possible so that advertisers will be more willing to part with money in greater amounts to advertise on your channel than any other's rival channel. To attract the highest numbers of viewers possible, one must tailor the content presented to the highest number of potential viewers.

Naturally in any population the number of well educated people, whose general and specific subject area knowledge, experiences, interpretations and expectations will be steered towards more complex subject matter, its comprehension, interpretation and discussion, will represent only a small fraction of the total population.

Such a small and elite fraction is not worth chasing in terms of generating mass audience interest, as compared to the remainder of the population which does not seek complex subject matter and does not like to be made to feel inadequate through its inability to comprehend and interpret such subject matter. Rather it seeks explanations of complex subject matter that it can readily relate to its experiences and expectations and comprehend and interpret such that it may take part in discussion. This is the proper functioning of mass audience TV news and documentary - to educate and to inform.

Where I believe many have gone wrong is in stepping over the line of explanation and interpretation of subject matter to enable mass discussion, into providing a biased explanation and interpretation of selective aspects of subject matter which provided by what may appear to be a voice of authority then limits and defines the ability of the mass audience to participate in discussion by essentially telling them what they need to think and believe, based on a restricted, and often one sided explanation of the subject matter.

All this may be interpreted as dumbing down for the audience and in some cases this would be accurate within the definitions and descriptions above.

But the most worrying aspect of it is not this but that there is an ancillary effect, whether intended or not, whereby the process works to dumb down the audience - essentially and effectively removing any aspiration or ability on their part to think about, interpret and comprehend what they are being told by the TV and more importantly, by any other source, such that they become reliant on being told what to think, how to interpret and comprehend.

This is most definitely not to educate or inform but to brainwash - and as time passes and the process strengthens and widens this will prove to be very dangerous indeed.

The bullshit is that this is even an issue:

"Indeed, here’s the paragraph from Rasmussen’s article that Fox was referring to with the graphic:

Fifty-nine percent (59%) of Americans say it’s at least somewhat likely that some scientists have falsified research data to support their own theories and beliefs about global warming. Thirty-five percent (35%) say it’s Very Likely. Just 26% say it’s not very or not at all likely that some scientists falsified data.

While Petterson maintains that Fox & Friends didn’t err in displaying the information from Rasmussen, she acknowledges that the presentation wasn't perfect. “The mistake I do see is we could have been a little clearer here,” she said."

So the graphic is taken exactly from what Rasmussen wrote, and doesnt misrepresent anything.

I view all the networks as biased.   That includes FOX.       As to stuff I post-  if anything it is thought inspiring.   I am  a product of society.    Thankfully we can still have dissent in this country.

We live in fascinating times- and wrong doing does go on.

If I posted-  that FOX takes its talking points from the white house- then that would be a 'conspiracy theory.

The deck is stacked.

My sarcastic post here was a jab- over the NSA post - where the price list of yahoo, Verizon and others were leaked.

What happens when the wrong people get your Internet data?    Lifes can be wrecked.   Some corporation is mining that data-= and "I" am the "lunatic"....

One day you might see a post of mine that you wished you had further explored.

And if not- that is fine as well.  There are others on the board, if we all were exactly the same it would be boring.

It was mean spirited of me to carry this jab into this thread.  I apologize for that.   Either way- today is a new day.  So we go forward.
