I really like what he says at the end, “An entertainment complex in the middle of a sewage system, no engineer would design that!”

I haven't been able to find that lecture of Neil with Ed Whitten and the other physicists talking about how they don't believe in God, I think I saw it on YouTube, but I'm going to keep looking for it; too bad I didn't bookmark it, I thought I did.

YouTube - Neil Degrasse Tyson - Stupid Design

So the next time a creationist says to you that our Earth is positioned just right in our solar system and that God put it there so humans can live and survive on Earth. You can fire back with this video.

Ya know, Brain. No one is shoving their beliefs on anyone in this forum... besides you. at least 90% of these religion types of threads are started by you. All designed to start an argument. Do you get off on these kinds of things? Honestly, i have to wonder what kind of person you are. You take great delight in belittling others who do NOT believe as you do, yet enjoy putting others on pedastals who do.

As far as the sewage system... ahem... if they thought they could make money off it, ANY engineer would design it!

I want the truth, whatever it is; God or no God. Besides, I thought we were allowed to talk about religion, or, a lack of it here. I’m not afraid of the truth whatever it is.

I don’t like being lied to and I just wanted to add that there isn't anything else out there, and I mean God.

You want truth as you see it.

BTW...

Who's lying to you?

If you do not believe in God, and hense not part of a Church, then you are not being lied to are you?

Curious though... the way you spelled God with a capital G.

I'm gonna have to go with tazzafras on this one.

I understand what you're going through, Brainman. We've all had our own religion-bashing phases. I've been there. You could go read Nietzsche's 'The Anti-Christ' to vent your frustrations.

The thing is, though, by incessantly attacking religion you run the risk of alienating people who might otherwise support your cause. Are you anti-war? (for instance) A lot of Christians are on the front line of that cause, as they were during Vietnam. (Then again, the last time I went to church, many years ago, the priest during the eulogy stated that fighting in the Middle East was the result of quote 'not enough Jesus', whatever the *%$# that means.)

If you read the Bible, Jesus appears anything but a blood-thirsting capitalist. He probably wouldn't have voted for Bush. Cut the guy some slack -- He probably wouldn't have believed in Creationism either!

What should worry you is if 'the people' start replacing the Bible with, say, something written by Rush Limbaugh, or, even worse?.... Ayn Rand.

You know, I am 50 years old, and in my half century I have lived all over the world and met people of damn near every faith imaginable....and never once has a creationist ever tried to convince me of anything unless I asked them their views....in fact the only people who have tried to convert me are atheists...Even the mormons who took me on a day trip with a bunch of their missionaries never once tried to sway me. So what is it about you atheists that drives you to proseletyze so vehemenantly...what gives?

I have had mormons knock on my door with their Bible several times, much more than I care to remember wasting my time, and at that time I was Orthodox and I never would have changed from Greek Orthodox, and just two weeks ago I ran into a lady who found out I was an atheist and she tried to convert me to her religion. So maybe we' re living on different planets, I don't know; I won't get into what happened to my friend in Los Angeles who ran into Scientologists.

Damn, Arpig, you are just a kid.

What is going on, I think, is we non-believers are just coming out of the closet. The new sense of freedom is rather exhilerating. It is a passing thrill. We will get over it.

I agree with you. Brain is a bit too much. He can't get off the topic. His recurrent posts are making us non-believers out to be bad guys. I wish he would give it a rest. Time to show some maturity and conciliation, Brain. The place for debate on this topic is in the Courts. We all have to get along.

Your opinion is important and you are entitled to it. Perhaps you could use your intelligence and research skills to respond to threads for which you feel so strongly rather than begin new ones so frequently. Defence attornies are often more effective than prosecuting attornies. Give it a thought.

Maybe its just because I don't generally discuss religion with strangers. Many years ago I had a couple mormons come to my door. I invited them in, they noticed my stack of D&D books and that's what we discussed...D&D - they had been players in college so we swapped D&D stories. As they were leaving, one of them turned back and said "any chance you want a copy of the Book of Mormon"? I said sure, why not, I may get around to reading it someday...he left me one and it sat on my bookshelf unread for about 20 years until I got rid of it in a major downsizing. That's as close as a religious person has ever come to trying to convert me.

I have had enough of wars, I am sick of Protestants fighting Catholics, Jews fighting Muslims, Sunnis fighting Shia and so on and so on it goes. I don't think it's going to make any difference whatever I do quite frankly, people are going to believe whatever they want to believe. This topic bothers me because I was very religious for many years and it significantly affected my life, in fact, I would have done things much differently if it were not for being religious.

I used to accept whatever came my way and didn't take any action in many instances to change what was going on. I just accepted the situation whatever it was and usually didn't try to fight it too much if I disagreed. But now that I can see there isn't any such thing as God's will; these days I believe in my own free will so I can see that if I want something to be different I'm going to have to be the agent of that change.

I don't know if this makes any sense to anyone but I just know that I need to do what I think is right and not what some illusionary man in the sky would like as interpreted to me by Rush Limbaugh or Pat Robertson. So when you talk about what should worry me, my reply is, it does worry me because that is exactly what's happening now. Because they are not replacing the Bible but they are twisting its meaning to suit their own purposes. Indeed, someone had a thread on here several weeks ago concerning conservative is rewriting the Bible and interpreting it so that it fit with their right wing philosophy and ideology. So I guess they're doing both.

Oh fuck, Brain, get over yourself. Everybody does what they think is right, it's what the people you rant against are doing, and when it's all just more of the same old me and my group are right, you and your group are wrong, and the only real problem is you damn heathen deniers, trust me there isn't anything "right" about it.

I try to think objectively, so right now I think the truth as I see it is the truth. And I feel comfortable saying it because I am in agreement with Richard Dawkins who I admire for his intellectual capacity. What Dawkins says makes sense to me so I believe it. The man's logic is impressive and he is debating a man with a Masters in theology.

Evan Solomon, a McGill University graduate with a masters in religious studies, goes head to head with Richard Dawkins with cookie cutter Atheism interview questions and reveals a deep misunderstanding of evolutionary biology along with a lack of journalistic research.

Soloman's co-host Carole MacNeil, in response to Dawkins' calm reasonable responses, reacts with frustration and an inclination toward violence.

CBC News: Sunday - Richard Dawkins (Full - Highest Quality)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NSk_ZeAH_I

I have been a part of the church for the majority (90%) of my life so at the very least for that time according to your logic I was lied to. And even after becoming an atheist I still think I'm being lied to because no matter where I look, religion is all around me. Especially tonight, I can't watch anything on TV, not even the news without something religious coming up. On tonight's news a guy in South Africa who prayed to save his life after he was attacked and stabbed. Did you ever read that book called subliminal seduction?

I spell God that way because that's how I was taught to spell God when I was a child. It doesn't mean anything to me one way or the other if it's capitalized or not.

Brain, you are certainly entitled to your own opinion. However, i am entitled to mine. Repeatedly you post about how believers are stupid, moronic, ect. Cant you argue your point without putting anyone else down? Cant your heros? I mean, honestly, if they cannot argue a point, like yourself, without demeaning someone else, then its no wonder why no one listens anymore.

I'm reminded of that scene in "Meet Me In St. Louis" where the 4-year old girl says, "St. Louis is my favorite city. I'm so lucky to have been born in my favorite city!"

It's an easy argument to defeat without a video, because it simply makes no sense. It's an amazingly stupid argument. It's like saying, "Isn't it an incredible coincidence that fish can breathe underwater? Because otherwise they'd, like, drown!" Fish can breathe underwater because that's where they evolved. If we'd evolved on a different planet, we'd obviously be perfectly suited for whatever conditions prevail on that planet. Somewhere, at the bottom of a sea of liquid methane on a gas giant orbiting 3 billion miles from a white dwarf star, some giant eyeless amoeba who navigates by sonar and communicates with electromagnetic pulses is marveling at how fortunate it is that it's planet is 3 billion miles from it's star rather than 2 billion, because if it were only 2 billion miles away it would be too hot to support life. And probably calling it an unmistakable example of god's infinite wisdom.
