You know, I am 50 years old, and in my half century I have lived all over the world and met people of damn near every faith imaginable....and never once has a creationist ever tried to convince me of anything unless I asked them their views....in fact the only people who have tried to convert me are atheists...Even the mormons who took me on a day trip with a bunch of their missionaries never once tried to sway me. So what is it about you atheists that drives you to proseletyze so vehemenantly...what gives?

I have a friend who also became born again and it got to the point I had to ask her to stop constantly spewing out biblical quotes, which she did, but I still have to listen to it second-hand as she babbles to other people.

It's worse than second-hand smoke.

And I could give you many more stories, so please, let's not pretend proselytizing is not the foundation of many faiths.

I have not been anywhere near as harranged as you, but I agree believers can be aggressive. When I was chairman of a high school science department I had a biology teacher who kept a bible on his lab desk. Nothing much I could do about it. I don't believe Darwin got much of a shake in this fellow's classes. He was a Jehovah's Witness, a believer I think in being part of a select group who will experience paradise. If there are any Witnesses on this board in cognito or their sympathizers please correct me.

You have my sympathies, Rule.

Maybe I don't get your point... are you trying to suggest that there's something about this you find implausible?

This is undoubtedly bad timing to be saying this, considering it is the day after Christmas, but I can't resist.

Is it any less plausible than the white-bearded guy who lives on a throne in the sky and magically impregnated a virgin, who managed to remain a virgin even though she was already married, with his only son without taking her virginity?

And what about the Seventh Commandment against adultery.

Do as I say not as I do?

I think the Panda was referring to Scientology. If he was then you missed the humour in his remark. Then again maybe he wasn't and perhaps you have a good point. Boy, I do get sore straddling these damn fences.

No, I knew that was what he was referring to and I know his remark was meant as humor and in agreement.

I just couldn't resist the opening he gave me to make the comparison.

Buddhists do not believe in god.

Not true.  They do not follow the belief of an almighty creator as the Abrahamic religions do.

Yet you are bothered by and constantly criticize Brain's posts when you can easily ignore his threads.

Mostly because he states things without any real basis...such as that outrageous claim he made months ago about science having disproved the existence of God...something he has yet to back up. I would do the same to any other religious person who flodded the boards with their own particular dogma as assidiously as does Brain. I call out anybody who posts opinion as fact, and I also do so to anybody who repeatedly posts the same thing. I have no objection to Brain's political posts, in fact I am often in agreement with him, but when he posts this sort of stuff claiming it is proof that religious folks are stupid or deluded (which they may be, but he has yet to offer any actual proof) then I will call him on it, just as I will anybody else.

Brain,

Next time, find an interesting article, post it without an editorial in the Off Topic Section, and watch things go smoothly.

While you're in denial about this, what you do instead, over and over, is find an interesting article, and post it here with a smug, glibly worded and ridiculous claim about how it (1) disproves God or (2) proves evolution...although more recently (3) you've branched out to other political issues, but with no better approach.

Consequence? You get pushback on your pushing, and the article/discussion gets thrust aside. How's that working out?

Honestly I have had a lot of Subsciptionists wanting me to convert into a Magazine Subscriptionist to help with some ritual called "contest".  Evidently the more people who sign this form insures their salvation but I'm still sketchy about the details of their dogma.  I'm assuming that's who everyone is upset about?

I love when creationist try to convince me of something, and contrary to your experience it happens quite often. My favorite time was when I met my lg's former Dom. He had all the familiar probabilistic creationist arguments lined up, but he didn't know that I'm a mathematician and had all of his misunderstandings/misstatements answered before he raised them. I left him with the pointed comment that he should now understand why she is his ex-lg.

I don't know where you've lived, we live in central Mexico and have Mormons, Jehova Witnesses and evangelical Baptist knock on our door every week.... never have had an atheist come to us with a watchtower publication....

Let me add to this that Arpig, living in Canada (which of course is not so far from the US ) may not be aware of the efforts by Creationists and Intelligent Designers to get their ideas assigned to the science curricula of our high schools.

Fairly recently we had a case in Pennsylvania in which the Court ruled against the inclusion of Intelligent Design as a science in the high school biology curriculum. If you are interested, google intelligent design, the case will show up. Respectfully Arpig, perhaps you are not aware of the politics of religion in the US. We nonbelievers do not proseletyze so much as defend the wall between church and state.

Jeez, you are making Brain look good after I remarked on his zeal. What is it with you, Arpig?
