ORIGINAL: wisdomtogive i am aware of my ego, and use it to make sure that my basic needs are met, but will not let it guide me in my life journey. *nod* I definitely agree with this. I remember reading somewhere that "nature designed us to be mediocre in order to survive," and, although the source was meant to be one of those "motivational" type documents, I think that it is quite apt. This mediocrity can perhaps be seen as the Ego at work - although more developed than the Id (the Ego having the ability to rationalize, problem solve, etc), the purpose, I think, of the Ego is to survive. This survival, though, is a bit more...developed, perhaps, than the concept of survival from the perspective of the Id (sex makes babies thus furthering the human species); the Ego is adaptable to "survive" within the context of the social structures that we have created around us. In order to transcend this mediocrity, however, the Super-Ego must be discovered and used. Although I am well aware that these concepts have been generally ignored or discredited in the years since Freud, I do think that there is some part of us that is designed to "strive for perfection," should we choose to tap into it. Within the context of D/s, then, I think it would be the "Super-Ego" that drives me. The desire to live a balanced life in a power dynamic supersedes the simple instinctual drives to seek pleasure or to get away from pain, as does it transcend my ability to "survive" in every day interactions with others. What it does do is empower me as a person when in a harmonious relationship, which allows me to strive to be better than what I am now.
