But since Google is KNOWN to be censored, it might come up with "christianity is bullshit" instead.

If I build in enough 'tags it is also possible that you might get "Pirate is worse than Satan" [sm=evil.gif].

The google search box also checks your recent web history and throws up possible sites, related to what you have been looking at.

One thing that i have never been able to fathom is this. When Google first started operating in China, why did they agree to block searches on certain topics. These include Tibet and Tiannamen Square.

They had to change their ethos from 'do no evil' to

'do the lesser of two evils'

They argue it could act as the thin end of the wedge eventually opening up the freedom, like others have stated I highly doubt they'll leave.

Everyone should be getting the same results. Type in judaism is do not hit enter or press any buttons and a drop down box of suggestions will appear. Those are based on word associations found on websites in the google database. You can try this for most any two words that you would expect to appear close togethr on webpages.

Try this with Islam is and you get nothing. Since it is extremely unlikely that those words are never assocaited with any other words on indexed webpages the reasonable conclusion is that someone at Google has intentionally set the AJAX software that produces the suggestions to not return any in this case. It is exceptionally cowardly if it is an official action of the company but it could have been inserted by a programmer without the company's knowledge or permission.

Because the Chinese government wouldn't let them operate otherwise. Whether their agreement to this condition is ethical or not is a topic for another day. But here in the so called free world it shouldn't even be an issue. Google can self censor itself if it wants to - its their company after all - but IMHO it violates the spirit of free inquiry and thought. Mostly it just comes across as cowardly.

I'd already mentioned the why on that, it's because they're money grabbing unprincipled leeches.

(apparently ... though time will tell ... they're reconsidering ... and "may" pull out of China ... we shall see. In the meantime, I, for one am avoiding them.. HERE is the rumour.)

If you consider the reasons (outlined in the above link) as to WHY they "might" be seriously looking into behaving differently soon, not a scrap of it has to do with an ethical u-turn. (how safe do YOU feel YOUR Gmail info is after reading the article in the above link?)

Himalayas him

yields NO suggestions.  So, I guess Google is prejudiced against the Himalayas, right?

Here's a real curious one:

christianity christian

yields but one suggestion, namely

christianity christian girls names

How, very, very prejudiced against BOYS!!! <dripping sarcasm>

Wrong. Because the words "Himalayas him" is not the beginings of a sentence. It is nonsensical in and of itself. "Islam (or any word) is" is, however, the beginings of a sentence and therefore should have lots of suggestions.

Marc2b: Try just about any word to start a google SUGGESTION and you will rarely, if ever, have the start of a sentence provided.

If you type

"islam is"

with quotes and hit the enter key - you get 3 MILLION hits.  Censorship would be showing ZERO hits!

I get the same answers for Muslim, Islam, Judiasm and Christanity.
You do relize the way Google works, and the concept of GoogleBombing? Google doesn't sit around thinking up these things. It bases it's guesses on what is being typed and asked by users, without any human censoring the uses. It's all percentages. Same for the order of the hits - the more something is mentioned in a site, the more 'relevent' it is. the more hits it get, as well. The more sites use a sentence wich fits your partially typed sentence, ect. it's not censorship, it's robotic artifical intellegence.

Actually, if you ever play around with Plain english questions on google, you can get amazingly on subject answers, and the drop down feature will make your mouth drop open with how it seems to read you mind.

It's like playing with the little '20 questions' ball. How does google know i was thinking that?

You can ask google quesitons strait out of any conversation and get amazingly on target answers.

one day my sister, who is the mother of two AA children, asked, 'Are African babies born white looking, or only African American babies?'

I types 'Are African Babies' and Google finished the thought for me as my first choice! Really! how many people out there were asking that question? Crazy.

Not handy for serrious research, but fun to play with.

I'm not talking about what happens after you hit enter but before. It's not about how many hits you get but what suggestions appear in the drop box.

Thank God food companies still respect freedom of speech and haven't gone in for censorship.

Last night using two tins of 'Alphabetti Spaghetti' (pasta shaped into letters in tomato sauce) I could easily spell out 'Islam is rubbish', 'Islam is crap' and so on for Christianity, Gordon Brown, Obama, and not only..

I could even manage quite a few rude phrases to complete 'Republicans are..' but couldn't for the Iranian President Mr I'm A Dinner Jacket because I cannot spell his name properly.

So I just settled for Mohammed I'm Dim In The Head...

I also managed to spell out a long list of kinks too.

As much as anything, this "problem" references two actual problems:

1) People have no research skills; they expect to punch in whatever phrase and get instant and complete results without having to evaluate those results in any way. Google does this primarily by how many other sites link to it--thus making "the earth is flat" an important hit in medieval thinking. This also means that Wiki thinking is more important than individual thinking.

2) People already know the results they want, and don't actually want information from research other than what they already believe.

What does this have to do with Google offering helpful suggestions to complete your search for religions other than Islam, Muse, but that they have obviously disabled something to defer to that faith?
