Considering the fault along which the Haiti earthquake happened had been locked for about 200 years, it was going to break loose sooner or later.

Come to think of it, the New Madrid fault in the central United States has been locked for a while, wonder when that one is going to slip?

Now as far as the quake being some sort of retribution by mother earth for our lack of action at the summit in Copenhagen, I would have thought she would have hit one of the industrialized nations that did not support the agenda of the meeting, if in fact the planet can act with vengeance or in some matter that indicates both emotional and rational thought.

While I agree the planet is alive, and all living things are connected, I have yet to see any indication that there is a collective or 'world' brain at work.

I attend and present at conferences... so if I bring up Haiti in relation to their history of HIV infection as a medical anthropologist and then tie that to the crisis they face now, this is "political"?

In this country global warming is considered a partisan issue. At a conference like the one in Copenhagen, it is considered a reality that must be dealt with, and part of that reality is storms that will cause untold damage in places like Haiti (if not Haiti itself). I hardly think this is disgraceful to connect the two issues... even if he conflated them incorrectly

It's not the connecting of the two issues that I find distateful (disgraceful is too strong a word) but the timing of it. During an ongoing disaster we as a society, as people, should be focusing on the imediate need for aid rather that causes and effects. Those have been argued about since the begining of the human race and will probably be so until its end. There will be plenty of time for it later.

Look at it this way: if you came upon an auto accident with injuries would your first thoughts be: what caused this accident? Brake failure? Distracted driving? What can we do about it or would you think: I need to call an abulance!

With over six billion cantankerous primates roaming over the earth, I don't expect everyone to agree with my notions of decorum and morality. But none-the-less that's my take on the issue and I'm sticking with it.
