juliaoceania -> Should I do an EVP in my Apartment? (1/21/2010 11:56:49 PM)

For those who do not know what EVP is

http://http://www.ghostsandstories.com/evp-recordings.html

and for those of you who do...

I live in a building that is nearly 100 years old. It used to be a hotel and famous people stayed here.. especially on the top floor where I currently reside. This is really freakin cool and all, you know, a dingy converted high rise hotel with cheap rent in a great location and spectacular views... grad student heaven, I know.. but there are some things I am still getting used to here, and that is the creepy feelings I get, even in the middle of the day. Sometimes when I walk down the hall in the building the air looks misty. The elevator will open for no reason, often in the middle of the night when no one is around (this is very explainable being an old elevator and all).

There are also the stories that others have told me, like the assistant manager who told me that he has had knocks on his door, no one there when he goes to open it. The guy who does the cable service here told me he hates coming here because he thinks the air is "misty" (that is what we both said, and it really is the only way to explain it... it is almost like someone put vaseline on a lens or something). He said he gets the creeps...There is a lady that has lived here for 13 years who said that she has had many weird things happen here, and she won't tell me what they were...

So, I know of one technique to ghost hunt... and that is EVP. I have a digital voice recorded because of my work, and it would be really easy to take some recordings in the halls here (in fact some of my fellow tenants want me to, because of stuff that has happened to them)... but to be honest, and I hate admitting it because I am neither a skeptic nor believer, I am afraid to do it...

I get creepy feelings in my apartment like something near my entry door. My apartment is newly remodeled, completely cozy and fresh feeling, and yet all the fresh paint, tile, and new carpet... it still feels weird.. I think.. what if I took a recording and some voice said '"GET THE FUCK OUT" or "I AM GOING TO KILL YOU".. what would I do? I mean I still have to fulfill the terms of my lease[:D]

What do you all think?

It would totally freak me out if there was something nasty sounding in here with me...lol

Go for it. :)

From the way it sounds, all you're dealing with is a residual haunting.  Chances are it doesn't even know you are there.  In which case, you have absolutely nothing to worry about, aside from maybe the occasional elevator door opening or spotting someone walking down the hall to their old room once in a great while, kind of like a record skipping in their time line.

On the outside chance that it's an intelligent haunting, 99.9% of the time, they're just a little bit lost and confused and want to talk, just like any other person, only sans body.  Nothing to worry about there either.

In the extremely rare circumstance that it's intelligent and malicious, you can multiply that rarity by about 100 fold that it would even be strong enough to do anything about it other than grumble at you on your recorder or thump on a wall or maybe make you hear something that you're not sure if you heard or not.  Commonly, these types can be dealt with, with a firm and resolved "F*** off.  This is my place, not yours.  Now vamoose."

That's if you get anything at all.  A big big if.  I believe in the supernatural, ghosts, etc... why not?  I've seen some strange shit in my time, and actually do partake in a bit of "hunting" myself.  There's a fuck ton of things in this world we know little to nothing about, and haven't even touched on any other worlds, be they physical or spiritual.

That being said though, I also believe that nearly everything can be chalked up to logical reasons, and usually is.  Your building is very old, it's going to make strange sounds sometimes, probably has some humidity issues in areas, old elevators have old wiring and can sometimes cause them to just open their doors.

I also have a hard time believing in "orbs" in photos.  "OOOOH!  Look at all the orbs we got in this picture in the graveyard!  Ghosts everywhere!"  So tell me, you were obviously outside, and the path there, if you were on a path, was either dirt, or very dusty old pavement, and there were grass and trees and bugs around, yeah?  "Uhh, yes?"  Gee, couldn't be anything like dust, bugs and particles everywhere, could it?  *headdesk*

There's an odd thumping on the floor sometimes.  Go check the basement, I'll bet $20 that there's a loose water pipe there.  Strange scratching on the wall by the window?  Trim the damned tree branch.  Logical little stuff like that, which we're overlooking because we're momentarily creeped out.

That's the overwhelming majority of your "ghosts" right there.

But, if you look at things logically, take time, figure out all the angles, eliminate everything it could possibly be, and it's still not solved, then, just maybe, you might be dealing with something supernatural.  And just because it's supernatural, doesn't even necessarily mean it's a "ghost".  All it means is that it's not something that occurs naturally or commonly.

Sooo, fear not, have some fun, try and experiment and learn. :)  Just don't go pulling out those daft ouija boards.  Seriously.  It's made by Milton Bradley.  It's about as spiritual of a thing as a monopoly board.  ;)

Good luck hon.  If you want to, give me a holler, let me know what you decide, what you find, etc.  I might have some other advice for "hunting" it (whatever it is) down. *HUG*

juliaoceania -> RE: Should I do an EVP in my Apartment? (1/22/2010 12:41:58 AM)

There are no odd sounds here that I cannot explain...

Now the assistant manager heard hard knocking on his door, several times... now that could be residual I suppose.

It is the feeling of being watched that is bothering me, and tonight it is particularly prevalent.. which according to theories I have read, it could be the weather...

As far as humidity.. there is not much here in the summer, and this misty thing happens often..

I know the likelihood of getting something intelligent and menacing is unlikely, perhaps I will try, but I think I need someone here to go through with it.

BKSir -> RE: Should I do an EVP in my Apartment? (1/22/2010 12:50:09 AM)

Hm, I'd also check for electro magnetic fields, with the feeling of being watched.  Weather could play a role in it also, yes.  But e.m.f.'s (not the band from the early 90s), can easily be checked by an electrician.  The humidity doesn't have to be all around, there can be some areas where there are cold water pipes near a heating duct, and condensation etc will quickly occur and play tricks.  :)

I'm not saying it's not an unexplainable mist either though, wish I was there to experience it and investigate though.  Sounds like a fun time, even if nothing fruitful comes of it.  May I ask where "here" is?  I might be able to get you in touch with someone in the area that could help.

Long Beach

BKSir -> RE: Should I do an EVP in my Apartment? (1/22/2010 12:58:00 AM)

Let's see... There's South Coast Paranormal and Pacific Paranormal Investigations, both out of San Diego, so just a hop skip and jump from you.  As far as I know, neither charge to come out and check things out.

Damn, why couldn't you say "Utah", or "Southern Idaho", or "Eastern Nevada", or "Western Wyoming"?  ;)

GoddessRedCat -> RE: Should I do an EVP in my Apartment? (1/22/2010 1:01:01 AM)

Long Beach can get foggy, I know from my nights at The Art for Rocky and then later my many nights on the Queen Mary for Rocky and the few investigations with BIM.  (Ah how I love the QM)  But if she is on the higher floors of the building she should not be getting fog even from an open window or bad seal.

Kink friendly hunters... hmmm what would we call ourselves.

Has anyone downloaded one of those Apps to turn  your cell into and EMF detector... I knew it was a rip off but I had to do it anyway.... fun, but a waste of money.

BKSir -> RE: Should I do an EVP in my Apartment? (1/22/2010 1:04:17 AM)

Aww, too bad it's a rip off, I'd love to have an emf detector built into my cell phone. :)

I just was emailing with someone on the other side about this topic... there is a lot of street noise here, there are over 100 units.. cement building.. and while the noise does not travel easily in the units themselves, there are open stairwells for 8 floors... which noise does travel readily through

I'm picturing a ghost in cuffs, being chased by another ghost with a flogger or riding crop.  [:D]

EDIT:  to add... mayhaps I should draw that up tomorrow at some point. [:D]

LOL!  I can see it now.  "Oh?  Him?  Don't worry, the guy in the leather mask isn't the ghost of some crazy axe murderer, that's my slave.  SIT BOY!  Good boy.  Now stop following the nice men with the cameras around.  Yes, I know that one is cute and has that cable with him that looks like it would sting, but you're going to contaminate the evidence with your moaning."

I saw a paranormal state episode where they investigated a sex dungeon.. it turned out the prude former owner didn't like the goings on there....that show is not for "evidence" people, but it is still very entertaining

BKSir -> RE: Should I do an EVP in my Apartment? (1/22/2010 1:32:19 AM)

I'll admit, I watched that show about 3 times total.  Not that episode, but that would be an interesting and fun one. :)

if you want to do an evp session, go for it

GoddessRedCat -> RE: Should I do an EVP in my Apartment? (1/22/2010 1:42:24 AM)

BK, yes please, I want you to draw us up a shirt.....  :)  I have no artistic skill outside of singing and being really odd so, I can't do it...

Do the laughs make you feel more comfy with your EVP question?  I sent off feelers about the Detector...

GoddessRedCat -> RE: Should I do an EVP in my Apartment? (1/22/2010 1:44:42 AM)

I like Ryun in Paranormal State, such a cutie and I love that he cares... he either is very lucky and gets only cases that are paranormal or they pre-investigate and only film the ones that pan out though......  I love it when he tells things.  "I command thee to get out, in the name of god!!!"   I sometimes replace it with "I command the to get on your knees in the name of all things fun"....:
