DomKen -> Obama at the House GOP retreat (1/29/2010 11:49:59 AM)

http://www.c-spanarchives.org/program/ID/218836 (yes, its over an hour)

Which House Republican leader let CSpan film this?

housesub4you -> RE: Obama at the House GOP retreat (1/29/2010 1:19:43 PM)

Here is the take from a reporter and the GOP saying it was a mistake letting the cameras role,

He responded to every lie they have put in the press and called them out on them

It's a youtube video of a newscast after the event

willbeurdaddy -> RE: Obama at the House GOP retreat (1/29/2010 1:26:16 PM)

I only watched about 5 minutes of it this morning, It wasnt just on C-span. In the part I saw he dodged questions about the lies told by Dems that the GOP didnt offer any alternatives to Dem policies and his implication of the same when he said in the SOTU "bring me ideas and I will listen to them". He then proceeded to criticize what was brought to him by splitting it into pieces, and ignoring the fact that the current proposals dont do a damn thing to lower costs.

mnottertail -> RE: Obama at the House GOP retreat (1/29/2010 1:28:50 PM)

but you sat down at a meeting, din'tcha wilbur?

housesub4you -> RE: Obama at the House GOP retreat (1/29/2010 1:31:08 PM)

You mean like this a quote from the meeting (it's Obama speaking)

"I've read your legislation. I take a look at this stuff. And the good ideas we take," Obama said. "It can't be all or nothing, one way or the other … If we put together a stimulus package in which a third of it is tax cuts that normally you guys would support, and support for states and the unemployed and helping people stay on COBRA, that certainly your governors would support … and maybe there are some things in there, with respect to infrastructure, that you don't like … If there's uniform opposition because the Republican caucus doesn't get 100 percent or 80 percent of what you want, then it's going to be difficult to get a deal done, because that's not how democracy works."

To believe there is something meaningful and truthful (instead of thinking it is meaningless phrases and runon sententences that strive to imply statements never actually made, as I do)  in the above blather one has to believe that,
1. NO Republican has offered ANY workable healthcare ideas, OR
2. Some of those workable ideas are included in the healthcare bill as, say, passed by the Senate.

The first is patently untrue; I cannot quite put my finger on the second.

The facts are:
A. Republican input was not just inwanted but essentially not allowed, AND:
2. NONE WAS NEEDED. The Dems have been defeated by Dems.

He admitted that he got input and specified a couple of the proposals which, on their own, didnt do enough to "bend the cost curve down". He also admitted they would slow the growth of premums.

But it may as well be true:

*The health care package they've spent a year attacking is virtually the same as the one they proposed to counter Clinton's.
*What happened to that proposal? They've had a majority in Congress for several years. Yet not a peep about it.
*The current counterproposals consist not of health care reform, but of deregulation of the health care industry.
*Republicans have stated from the start they wanted to kill health care, even before the bills existed, because they see defeating it as "Obama's Waterloo" in 2012.

Aside from all the other rhetoric on all sides, simple reality here is Republicans have no intention of passing health care reform, not this bill, not their bill, not any bill. They never have, and apparently never will, beyond talking about it to string it along with never-ending delay tactics. They'll talk of starting over, and they'll run that one into the ground too.

They oppose health care reform. Period. Not this bill--health care reform. Period.

So. Were these proposals included, or did they just run out of ink/paper?

And still doesn't explain what happened to the rest of it.

Not at all. All they answer when asked is to sell insurance across state lines, allowing companies to circumvent state regulations.

That's it? No reason?

It is true. In fact, it's obvious. In fact, Republicans have explicitly stated as much since it was introduced.

And that's why you're unable to supply a reason.

HR 4038. Read it and still claim that all it is is "deregulation".

truckinslave -> RE: Obama at the House GOP retreat (1/29/2010 4:09:28 PM)

"The health care package they've spent a year attacking is virtually the same as the one they proposed to counter Clinton's".
Are you serious? Did they also, in this alternate reality, propose to gut medicare to pay for it?

"The current counterproposals consist not of health care reform, but of deregulation of the health care industry.'
Can you think of a way to continue the availability of goods and services (in this or any other industry) without deregulation, increased competition, or both (I have my own ideas about increasing competition, but few would have the guts for them)?

"simple reality here is Republicans have no intention of passing health care reform, not this bill, not their bill, not any bill. They never have, and apparently never will, beyond talking about it to string it along with never-ending delay tactics."
Thank God. And the Dems who were such useful idiots.

Denzel...excellent analogy. Obama is an actor who can slip in and out of character without knowing a fucking thing about what hes portraying.
