The only real problem I have run across so far is if I sign my name Ron, then they say, "Ron you are an asshole....."
If I sign it mnottertail, then they say, "mnottertail you are an asshole............"

It is all quite confusing,
Ron

I sign My real name to every PM I send.  No problems.  It adds personalization to the letter, as opposed to signing it "Sir Kenin" or something like that.  In the forums I do not really care.  I like My nickname anyways and I do not really see a need to personalize My posts.

Thanks!  I've found it.

P.S.-  LAM, the painting is "Slave Market with the Disappearing Bust of Voltaire".  Pretty appropriate.  (brightspot had the right of it.  It's a Dali painting.)  It's one of my favorites.  In the painting, the slave girl in Takethiswaltz's avatar is subtly flipping off the observer.

I've been the Mistress Hathor of Orleans for so long, people wouldn't know Me--and I still have minor family so I remain secretive.

I too have both minor family and an unusual name, so on forums available to the public I don't use my real name.  In private messages I will, but usually only after I've gotten to know someone a little.

LOLOL,

I forgot the case in which the name is not required.

Like some others have said, if a person's first name is unusual, it could be traceable and cause problems.

Personally, I don't care for My given first name, so I don't use it.  It is very common, so I don't think there would be any problem with traceability.  I just happen not to like it and have no desire to sign posts with that name.

I love My middle name (Dawn) and used to go by that, but it became problematic as far as the scene goes because there are some other Dommes in the area going by Dawn, as well as some subs.

Topaz happens to be My favorite gemstone and is the birthstone for My month of birth, so I like going by that as well as signing posts with that.  I also like that it is a name I gave to Myself, not a name given to Me by someone else.

my name is unusual and i would rather not be recognized by those i do not want recognizing me.  Those i become friends with outside the forum get my real name.

And Guage - - LOL that was priceless!

signing with it on the internet unless I am in a very, very trusting place(site).

LaM, the pic you referred to is a snip from a Dali painting.

Brightspot to- Ennien?

(Sorry, it's a good book and your name reminds me of the character - since it's the same name)

i have a birth name that i never use unless for legalese purposes, an adopted name that i use almost everywhere, and my suite nickname i use only in certain areas .

Hi, i'm tala.  Nice to meet Y/you. :)

Gee, use of a real name? Not an issue for me, except with my subs, who use it only as a safeword. I will tell you what it is..but more than 50% of you will add an e to it...which I understand from people named Jane that people drop the e from their name...so I suppose it all evens out...

I'm not comfortable signing my real name as not only is it unusual but it is oftentimes mispronounced, even real time. For that reason, I use my online name online and my real name real time, though there is overlap and leeway =) ... and prefer to introduce my name to another in speech rather than type. It also to me looks a bit harsher in type, yet sounds soft and sultry.
This hasn't caused any problems really... hmmm and perhaps it adds a bit of mystery..
oohhhhh and I really like using "foX" in type cause it has the hugs'n'kisses built right in ;]

I'm finding it curious how many people say they won't put their real names on here, yet they have no problem putting their faces here.  People will recognize your name, but they won't recognize your face?  I'm confused...

I have written my picture in code. I am not a middle-aged balding, slightly overweight guy... I am actually a male model with a 12" penis. I don't like to show the real me because I want to be loved for my mind, not my overly-studly awesome body.

Yes, I wondered about this, too.
