There's more widespread and subtle examples than that, sadly. The mess America's public school system is in seems largely down to the fact that a lot of school boards are dominated by people who value promoting philosophical orthodoxy over teaching kids to think.

Sad but true. Critical thinking is what lead me and many (not all) to Atheism. To promote critical thinking would open up the proverbial can of worms that would make every day citizen question authority, religion and absurd propaganda constructs such as the Axis of Evil.

The hilarious thing is that they pulled the plug on that nonsense back in the '50s as the Russians were winning the space race and teaching kids that fairytales and science had equal value wasn't producing enough physicists. These days there's no similar reason for valuing rationality, so that won't happen again.

You think? I disagree. India & China, and to a lesser degree, the Middle East (only because of political hindrances). I deal every day with the brains that are emerging from these areas. Time to wake up and smarten up America!

There's southeast asia, as well: most of the medical and genetic research seems to be moving there since the fundamentalists chased stem cell research out of America.
No question that India and China are doing very well out of having an educated and cheap workforce, though. Sadly that's just an economic problem rather than a sort of bizarre propaganda strawman, so no Government's likely to risk offending the religious right over competing with them. The Democrats are terrified of the fundamentalists and the republicans more or less are fundamentalists: Pat Robertson seems to be the Matthew Corbett to the Republican party's Sooty.

here's a point to ponder:

Suppose, if you will, that, if there's a God and he had all these powers and created everything we know and see...isn't it possible that he used up all his power when he created everything? i mean...really...it took alot of power to create everything. perhaps this is why it takes a combined effort of males and females to create a single life (more depending on how many they produce at one time). this includes all lifeforms. there's alot of creation going on, but it's not coming from any "Supreme Being" as far as i can tell.

My opinion in this topic would be skewed as I am a "believer".

However, I have enjoyed reading the discussion and getting to understand other points of view.

Thanks to all that have been sharing.

Good point!

I wouldn't be so sure of that statement. Yes the masses are poor, but then in the US they are too at the moment. However, they are buying more much professional development and education than any other region right now. Just wait...

My understanding is that the main reason so many customer support jobs (call centres and the like) have been shipped out to India is because they can hire a college graduate who speaks fluent English for a hell of a lot less than somebody who'd need little pictures on their workstation instead of text would expect in the 'States.
China has always had a culture that places a huge emphasis on education, and are making a huge effort to raise its standards higher at the moment, though, you're dead right about that. I think there's still a much lower level of universal education in India because of the caste system still lingering like a fart in a lift, but the people who do get educated get educated to a very high standard. (And next to Pakistan next door, they're all Reed Richards and Doctor Who rolled into one, even the untouchables...)

We just searched the world for an expert in a field. His work Visa was approved last week. He's moving here from India... I hope he gets used to the snow! ;-)

Just one example, yes. There are many. Many.

Absolutely. India's always been a society that places a great value on education, even if they do think a few chunks of the society are too unspeakable to deserve one.
What field is he working in, may I ask?

If god is all powerful (true definition of god) then he has the power to create anything. If so then he has the power to create something that can't be destroyed by himself. If something exists that can't be destroyed by himself then he doesn't have unlimited power. If he can't create something that can't be destroyed by himself then he doesn't have unlimited power.

If god used up all his power, as you say, then he was never the true definition of a god; one of unlimited power. The power would not be his in the first place, he would simply be the device through which it flowed like a light bulb.

Many things were done in the name of religion by people who were not religious.

Mind boggling, huh.

chuckles

one day, that statement may be understood by those outside of religion.. but i wont hold my breath.

Oh they weren't religious

That explains it: religious people don't commit evils in the name of religion because whenever such a thing happens the people only thought they were religious. It turns out they were misguided and were not religious after all. Only truly religious people know the true meaning of religion don't they?

NOW your getting it!!! LOL

Actually, your not... but do keep trying. All who call Lordy Lordy wont enter the gates of heaven.. as the saying goes. And the path to hell is paved with good intentions.

Being religious is more than just lip service, despite what you have been told.

tazzy can certainly speak for herself, but I'd say that much of religion has indeed been warped, by both the truely religious, and those simply using it as a tool to further their own agendas.

Religion is warped perhaps because the language used in religious texts is vague in a way that is convenient to explain things. It is written with such vagueness intentionally; to never be wrong under any circumstance. When the text is seen to be wrong (in accordance with modern morality), then obviously that's all to do with misinterpretation.

If a method statement for a company was written with such vagueness nobody would have a clue what the company stood for or what it wanted to achieve. However for religion that is ok because it becomes all things to all people.

SL4, I agree with much of your post. Probably where we disagree is that I believe that "twue" religion started out from a good standpoint (love, compassion, honesty, courage, etc), and was warped down the line, and I'm guessing that you may think that it started out warped.

Spirituality started off for benevolent purposes. Religions, on the other hand, were created as a way to establish and further the political power of the few over the many by manipulating credulous crowds with the magic baguettes of superstition and fear (thank you, Karl Marx).

Edited... typo... faaaahkin slippery when wet... thanks to the person that alerted to me to it, who shall remain anonymous... I stand duly corrected with the unabridged Oxford dictionary on my head.

NEVER AGIAN  .
