Well, the folks at the Super Bowl party I attended sure had opinions on the Who's performance tonight.

What are your thoughts about it?

Wrong type of gig for The Who. Hell, they peaked in the 60's.

Not sure why they mostly choose huge names in semi-retirement.

On a side note, I thought Evel Knievel did a good job with the Star Spangled Banner.

I guess I should have expected that.  Decades of drinking, drugs, partying, and wild sex cannot be good for anyone.

True, but I would do it again for my country.

Not quite as sad as the recent Bruce Springsteen concert (Merc actually turned that off, because we couldn't stand it), but still pretty bad.

Yup, it wasn't good; the light show was sharp, and they did pull it together a little bit on the last song.

The last good performance I can think of was Prince a few years ago.

I'm always interested in seeing if aging people "still have it". I thought it was pretty good...for their age

I saw them live in the 80's because I thought they wouldn't be around much longer.  I went out on the deck fired up the grill and smoked a cigar at half time.....and it was cold out....

I thought The Who's performance was fine actually.  Their presence there is like with all efforts to appeal to the Baby Boomer's average ages, but as iconic as The Who are; there is a limit when all good things should come to an end.  Are they really past their prime?  Some performers will take an adaptive approach by rearranging the material to fit their current capabilities...they may not hold a note for as long in the same key as they used to play in since voice changes do occur, or make some other effort to give the people something more palatable.  I overlooked some of the performance downsides last night because there was the spry Pete working the stage with a LOT of energy, giving it his best as he would have back before when he was a younger man.  A LOT of energy.

Roger's voice isn't so great as it was, nor Pete's for that matter; but these songs still have relevance and power to them.  But this trend of having iconic or older performers come out during the half-time show started right after the infamous "wardrobe malfunction"...(thanks again Justin and the ever-innocent Janet) a while back.  So the next year, they bring in Paul McCartney:  wholesome and safe.   Paul sings about "holding you hand", while poor J&J even though they were bringing sexy back, wasn't particularly great for the network TV people as they had anticipated...so now they play it safer.

Last night's performance of The Who could have been better in some people's eyes, but given all that this band has been through, good and bad; they did very well within their limits.  I don't think that they are washed up and should stop what they are doing.  I don't think they could even if they wanted to adapt the song a little differently to adjust to their current abilities, since the song demands it being played a certain way (Beethoven's 5th has suffered enough in it's popular plugging in certain songs on a purist level...but that is a different discussion I'm sure), so I think it would have been a little more sinful to have changed the songs by toning it down, and they were stuck:  People seeing The Who would want to hear the big classics and not their jazz interpretation "The Kids Are Alright".   So I cut them some slack and hope they hit the high-notes...and prayed for no wardrobe malfunctions.

Voices do not last forever. I have to assume whoever is in charge of picking half time performers must be aware of this.

When they started the set, the sound made it seem worse than I'm sure it was live.  That's what I decided anyway.  I'm one of those "old guys" & I had hoped for something fresher & more exciting than a medley of all their classics.  I love The Who, don't get me wrong.  But if I want to listen to their old stuff, I'll put in a cd from back when it was new.

People say that but then you have to look at someone like Status Quo who can still gig with the best after 40 years.

I'm glad not all of them died before they got old. I enjoyed it but then I'm pretty realistic. I don't expect them to look, sound or be exactly like they were 40 years ago. No one is capable of that. Reality taken into consideration I'd say they're still pretty good. I think they still merit respect for being the musicians they've been all these years. Keep rockin, guys!

I respect them for who they are, and how they got to where they are today.  I didn't see a couple of old guys wobbling about risking it all without a cane or walker...I saw some well established performers and musicians doing some of the songs that made them famous.  So the Superbowl halftime show had The Who, and it looks like not popularly so...  So in the interest of curiosity:  Who would you liked to see at the Superbowl halftime show instead?  How hard could it be to pick a group that would appeal to the masses?

The Chili Peppers?
Rhianna?
Hank Williams III?
Zamfir: Master of the Pan Flute?

I like them all (except for Zamfir).  So who would be your choice?

Trace Adkins, Mary J Blige, Alicia Keys, Bon Jovi (yes, Jon still has the voice).  There is a wide range of performers who can do the Halftime show.  I remember one having 2 or 3 different performers a while back.  Sticking to one performer does not add any variety to the show.

I thought it went pretty well all things considered. The Stones were the worst.
