I thought The Who's performance was fine actually. Their presence there is like with all efforts to appeal to the Baby Boomer's average ages, but as iconic as The Who are; there is a limit when all good things should come to an end. Are they really past their prime? Some performers will take an adaptive approach by rearranging the material to fit their current capabilities...they may not hold a note for as long in the same key as they used to play in since voice changes do occur, or make some other effort to give the people something more palatable. I overlooked some of the performance downsides last night because there was the spry Pete working the stage with a LOT of energy, giving it his best as he would have back before when he was a younger man. A LOT of energy. Roger's voice isn't so great as it was, nor Pete's for that matter; but these songs still have relevance and power to them. But this trend of having iconic or older performers come out during the half-time show started right after the infamous "wardrobe malfunction"...(thanks again Justin and the ever-innocent Janet) a while back. So the next year, they bring in Paul McCartney: wholesome and safe. Paul sings about "holding you hand", while poor J&J even though they were bringing sexy back, wasn't particularly great for the network TV people as they had anticipated...so now they play it safer. Last night's performance of The Who could have been better in some people's eyes, but given all that this band has been through, good and bad; they did very well within their limits. I don't think that they are washed up and should stop what they are doing. I don't think they could even if they wanted to adapt the song a little differently to adjust to their current abilities, since the song demands it being played a certain way (Beethoven's 5th has suffered enough in it's popular plugging in certain songs on a purist level...but that is a different discussion I'm sure), so I think it would have been a little more sinful to have changed the songs by toning it down, and they were stuck: People seeing The Who would want to hear the big classics and not their jazz interpretation "The Kids Are Alright". So I cut them some slack and hope they hit the high-notes...and prayed for no wardrobe malfunctions.
