You know, if conservatives really want to require people to pass an intelligence test in order to be eligible to vote, I say go ahead - make my day. Goodbye Tea Party, hello 3 generations of unopposed Democratic governence.

This is what I was thinking, that they just shot themselves in the foot.

Alright, except jlf tried to claim that Tancredo wanted to reestablish Jim Crow. What is the evidence for that claim? Or do panda's and SL4V3M4YB3's remarks (calling for the same thing Tancredo did) also have "racial overtones".

former Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo. said in his speech to the Tea Party Convention that President Obama won because "we do not have a civics, literacy test before people can vote."

He continued to say, "People who could not even spell the word 'vote' or say it in English put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House."

The literacy tests of which he spoke about during his speech this week were actually once used in our country's history in South to prevent blacks from voting.

The problem with such tests are that they are illegal in the US, and most adults could not pass them given the lack in depth civics courses in the American school system.

All in all, he was applauded for his comments which have racial overtones in American history, as recent as 1965 in fact.

Snipped from the Washington Post

Here is Tancredo’s opening: First, we should have a “civics literacy test” before people are allowed to vote. Second, “People who could not even spell the word vote or say it in English put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House whose name is Barack Hussein Obama.” Convention organizer Judson Phillips helpfully explained that "Tancredo doesn't feel like a lot of people who supported Barack Obama understand the basics of this country."

Yeah. Strip, get on your knees, close your eyes and open your mouth. And keep it open...

Edited to add,

More seriously - if you're going to post lies, bullshit or other unsubstantiated garbage and nonsense then you should be prepared to be called on it. In other words, I can't really humiliate anyone without their full participation.

Do you know what Jim Crow is?

Now this rather depends on if teapartiers are a specific race or not. We can call them Teapartian, originally from the land of Teaparty. Perhaps declare them as selection number 99 on the census?

Why should illiterate people be able to vote? If you can’t read then how can you read the ballot paper? We should have photos of each candidate on the ballot paper.

It's simple logic to me. Perhaps the papers should also be available in alternative languages such as 'liberal'.

I is sick of these liberals refusing to speak English and instead forcing the rest of us to speak their native tongue of liberal.

Personally, I think Churchill said it best:

"The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter."

As far as I know neither stupid, nor ignorant, adhere to party, ideology, gender, race or age.

That's how the election in Afghanistan worked, the candidates also drew a picture which represented their position. I couldn't find a great picture of the ballots but you can kind of make out their artwork in this one.

You mistake education with intellect... and I can assure you that in my travels I have found that it is best to assume that the two are not synonymous

There are people who believe that all conservatives are ignorant bastards who care nothing about anyone else, just like their are people on the right who believe the same of the left. There is nothing you can do about it, except feel sorry for them and those unfortunate to have to deal with them in real life.

Well, this rather concerns me, because the bulk of the Tea Party folks couldn't pass that sort of test.

Ron

I wouldn't know, I have never met anyone who claimed to be from the Tea Party. How many do you know?

I hate to be on Sanity's side...but

What is so bad about requiring citizens to speak English and know the basic structure and workings of the Government they are placing a vote for or against?

Yea Yea I know it is not practical ...and will never happen...and would be a problem for the illiterate to have help with the test… ridiculously expensive to implement...and it could be looked at as a way of prohibiting the poor and disadvantaged from voting.

But then again if you don't know what you are voting for...should you even be allowed to vote.

It is not constitutional, that is the first problem. Amend the constitution, and if everyone goes that solves that. Based upon the many people who can read, understand basic government, and vote mostly by television sound bites, I hardly see where we will improve things by these abilities, there are those who feel that tax cuts are somehow the saving grace, can you prevent idiocy by the ability to interpret symbols?

Funny but to become a naturalized citizen of the United States you must be able to speak English and pass a civics test...should not natural born citizens be required to as well?

And you know for a fact that they are all illiterate? Wow, that is amazing. Personally if I knew that many people who I thought were that dumb, I would consider hanging out in different circles. Just saying.

I hear ya, Buthc.... but it is what it is. Like I say, if there is enough people in this country want the change to the constitution, I don't give a fuck, go for it.

I am just personally not concerned either way.

Sure I understand what you are saying...I just think it is funny that people who become citizens of this country know more about our government then the average born at home on the street.

What I am really saying is I don't think his statement was racists ... there is a real need for better education in this country and civics is a great start.

At tea party convention, Tancredo says Obama elected due to lack of "civics literacy test" requirement for voting, VIDEO

TANCREDO: And then, something really odd happened, mostly because I think that we do not have a civics literacy test before people can vote in this country. People who could not even spell the word "vote," or say it in English, put a committed socialist idealogue in the White House, name is Barack Hussein Obama.

Yea that always amazed me too. I had a friend from Brazil who was studying to take her test for citizenship. I helped her with her english and she taught me more about the government than I learned in high school. Maybe they should make kids pass the same test to graduate.
