Yea that always amazed me too. I had a friend from Brazil who was studying to take her test for citizenship. I helped her with her english and she taught me more about the government than I learned in high school. Maybe they should make kids pass the same test to graduate.

To get out of 8th grade I had to pass the constitution test with 90%. They changed this

My 8th grade teacher was a notorious perv... he made certain girls take the roll call to the office every morning... but alas, he liked the ones with the boyish figures and never called on me to do it... he was gross, watching the girls walk away from his desk with the roll call

I came from the miniskirt days, or micro minis, and one perve history teacher used to have all the girls sitting up front. I later punched him out (11th grade, I was a golden gloves boxer, he didnt stand a chance) and it wasnt for that exactly, but it rather entered into the discussion.

Considering how well the statements were covered on cspan, and have brought up discussions on some of the news networks, I really didnt think anyone would have actually missed it.

I think a test like that would be a good thing. If more voters knew how to read, McCain / Palin would be in office right now.

what would they have read that would have sent this election the other way?

the details of the bridge to nowhere? the stand on Iraq? the McCain Feingold bill?

I'm not in favor of testing voters, thats bs. My only point is that it was a lie to call Tancredo and everyone else in the entire Tea Party movement racists because he is in favor of it.

They made us take government in high school, but that was about it. I ended up taking it in summer school because the teacher was an ass and my mom pulled me from the class. My teacher was into Marxism and taking us on field trips. We saw the fire station and police station and had lots of fun. But didn't learn squat about the government. If it tells you anything, I did my final report on the Manson family and got an A.

Why should illiterate people be able to vote? If you can’t read then how can you read the ballot paper? We should have photos of each candidate on the ballot paper.

You mistake education with intellect... and I can assure you that in my travels I have found that it is best to assume that the two are not synonymous

We educate ourselves or we are educated by others, it goes hand in hand.

Perhaps you educate yourself or sense that this candidate isn't worth voting for through perceptual research? From my perspective it seems you are playing with words unless you can explain what you mean better to me.

LOL, well if Madcow says it it must be true...

Just joking. In reality, Liberals also call for literacy testing to much applause (see the Nazi Lib's post above for just one example of this). And one person saying it isn't "the national tea party people" as you say, its one person.

Not like you'd ever let facts get in the way of your belief system though...

Hardly alleged

Same idiot who claimed waterboarding was not torture and that all non-christians should leave the US. THIS is your national Tea Party people.

When his speach is on her show, him saying those exact words, yep, i tend to believe it.

What I mean is that there are a lot of people that never learned to read that still have enough brains to be able to vote in a coherent enough manner so as not to deny them the franchise... that's all...

example... some people have learning disabilities... this does not mean that they are cognitively so regressed as to be considered intellectually disabled....

Oh I'm sure they do but since it's a secret ballot you'll never actually know if they picked the person they actually voted for or was mislead by being told to vote for the certain position down the list. Literacy is a problem especially in terms of access to information to make informed choices or indeed knowing the importance of voting in the first place.

For example in the most extreme case: I'm not sure the average Afghan knows who they'll be better off under (between candidates) or how their vote may actually change their lives in a day to day noticeable way. Democracy is touted as this magic pill that'll make the world a better place but the reality is they know the vote is important but making a selection is based on things such as written manifestoes that have to be read to be understood. Perhaps if they are told via radio etc. then they can make the sensible sane choice.

I agree that people in the western world don't have to be literate to vote because the lies they are told to vote for come in visual and sound bite form. This indeed requires no need to read the written word to make a judgement but others don’t have the same luxury. I don’t know why the Taliban bother with war because all they need to do is rename themselves and put their newly named political party on the list and they’ll get votes.

I think that a lot of Americans didn't realize just how much their vote for Obama would change their lives either.

So you do not only want a literacy test... you want to make sure people researched the ballot... good luck with that one!

Prefer to make it mandatory that we all vote upon penalty of a fine... like the Aussies do it
