Atheism in the modern sense has been around since the 18th century, it's nothing new. We know that the children of atheists are generally atheists.
Although Atheism really began to grow during the Age of Enlightenment the 18th century, the term atheism originated in 16th century France at the end of the Renaissance with criticisms of Christianity.
Also, atheistic ideas go back in history much further than that to Classical antiquity. Diagoras "the Atheist" was a Greek poet and sophist of the 5th century BCE. Even Socrates was accused of being amongst other things, an atheist, and was sentenced to death.
Many Indian faiths reject the idea of God the creator from their inception, including Hindusism and Buddhism. They prefer to venerate a philosopher than a God.
