yeah. It's not my thought process, but some anthropological theory I read somewhere years ago. The theory basically stated that advanced cultures tended to develop in response to extremes and because of those extremes, the lesser intelligence types were eventually weeded out. Whereas, those cultures that lived in areas of lesser extremes did not undergo that same evolutionary pressure.

i.e..

"The theory suggests that more intelligent people are more likely than less intelligent people to adopt evolutionarily novel preferences and values, but intelligence does not correlate with preferences and values that are old enough to have been shaped by evolution over millions of years."

Seems like a more subtle version of europeans are smarter and have bigger cities because it was cold where they lived rather than grass huts in sub-saharan environments.

Oh and I didn't post the abstract because I necessarily agreed with it 100%. I was posting it as food for thought, simply.

I do believe that the only way to evolve is to open our minds and start thinking about things differently.

Yes the title is very sensationalist. Do you think I did not reuse it on purpose ;-)

But the crux of the research is on "Evolutionarily novel". It just so happens that liberals and atheists often are the ones that demonstrate this. However, this not being my field of experise, I am very open to hearing arguments against this, like the ones proposed by AnimusRex a few posts above.

And thanks for clarifying things. We haven't been acquainted much on these boards and I guess I was expecting insults, which may have lead me to jump to an incorrect conclusion.

No, although their inbreeding is undeniable. I was thinking of these people:

Let me throw another log on the fire-

The last time I saw a poll on the readers of Science (predominantly people with Ph.Ds), the tally was something like 85% liberal. Now, in my travels, I've met executives from oil companies, pharma, heard politicians speak and answer unprompted questions (went to Dartmouth) and have a bunch of friends that are pretty sharp. But the smartest guys I ever met were a bunch of physicists who were friends of friends. They got into a discussion on some of Shakespeares more obscure plays (I was way outta my depth, I know Macbeth, Othello, Romeo and Juliet- etc- but these guys were going on about stuff like Titus Andronicus.) with a woman who taught English- and knew more about her work than the other people in her own department! Kinda like Sheldon on the Big Bang Theory, but not as obnoxious. And they were of course- you guessed it- liberals.

Unfortunately, I have to disagree about the minimus dickus theory of conservatives. It's clear that they reproduce, therefore they have to have some evolutionary advantages. At least a few of them have to be hung, or the species would die out.

I am NOT a Shakespearean scholar or expert in any way- but I happened to stuble across a video of Titus Andronicus made a few years back, starring Anthony Hopkins and Jessica Lange, with paul Rubens (Yeah, Pee Wee Herman!).

One of the best movies I ever have seen! ranks right up there with Branagh's version of Henry V.
It was really one of those you have to see to believe- sort of post-modern, filmed in nightmarish mashup of contemporary scenes with Elizabethan language. Go see it, if you get half a chance.

Now I return control of the thread back to you, dear reader.

The United States is the strongest country the world has ever seen…the only one that had the power to conquer the world…and did not do it…why?

Becuase...We are a majority Christian nation…conservatives and liberals alike with morals, provided and followed, by the Christian religion.

So we as a group managed to reach this pinnacle of civilization with the majority believing in God…I guess intelligence means little in the accumulation of power and world dominance then. If this is the case then maybe atheistic intelligence isn’t all it is cracked up to be.

We have territories all over the globe. We control the bulk of the Western hemisphere economically. We have strong military presence multiple places. We invade countries "preemptively."

And there's this large fundamentalist neo-con Family conservative Christian group that wants to literally conquer the world.

Really...seems to me that you are having a hard time conquering friggen Afghanistan, let alone the whole world.
The only reason the US has not conquered the world is because it can't do it...period. You have nearly bankrupted your country trying to take and control Iraq & Afghanistan....how much do you figure it will cost to conquer & occupy Russia and China. get sensible, it has nothing to do with christianity, it has to do with simple facts. Yes the US is the strongest nation on earth, but it is nowhere near strong enough to conquer the whole fucking planet.

Honestly, I find that at least half of the people are below average. And they populate both sides of the lib/con fence.

Facts are facts. You are right. However Butch, I don't see many facts in your statement unfortunately. I see a lot of pride in your country and conviction, but no facts.

Historically, and even to this day, there have been more crimes commited and innocent lives taken in the name of Christianity than in any other religion or cause. That is not my opinion, that is historical fact.

There are many kinds of Christians. There are the good Samaritan Christian that really wants this world to be a better place, i.e.: my mom. Then there are the Christians who really want to take over the world: i.e: the Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, and then a little later on the European Colonialists settling in the Americas, "helping" the indigenous population through subjugation, displacement or death.

The author of the original quoted study posted the following article. Now I want to preface this by saying that I personally find it a little extreme and I do not espouse such views. But I post it because I believe he is bang on about his assessment of this scenario:

Here’s a little thought experiment. Imagine that, on September 11, 2001, when the Twin Towers came down, the President of the United States was not George W. Bush, but Ann Coulter. What would have happened then? On September 12, President Coulter would have ordered the US military forces to drop 35 nuclear bombs throughout the Middle East, killing all of our actual and potential enemy combatants, and their wives and children. On September 13, the war would have been over and won, without a single American life lost.

Now is this the ideal outcome? Absolutely not. But that kind of thought is alive and strong in some conservative camps in America. Fortunately, they are not in power.
