That is true.

The Torah is filled with all sorts of untrue crap also... So what is the point of arguing whether Jesus fulfilled it or not, isn't that sort of meaningless?

From an athiest or non-abrahamic persepcive yes, yes it is. But from the perspective of a biblical scholar or a believing christain it can be a very interesting and/or pivitol point

For me it is like saying "my interpretation of Jesus is better than your interpretation  of Jesus"

It is sounds a little like Lost fans discussing what the smoke monster is...  You aren't going to prove anything because the text is 1000s of years old, and the world is a much different place.

And your myths are no more valid than theirs, get it? It is all a bunch of myth, and you stating that their myths are more mythical than your myths is pretty amusing actually.

Just let people believe what they believe instead of going into the one twue wayism

I take it your not well versed in theological concepts then. And what is this 'your' myth's buisness? They're not mine.

I am actually thinking about pursuing a PhD in anthropology with an emphasis on religion... but not Christianity. I look at the theoretical reasons people believe in religion to start with, not the content per se, and I genuinely believe there is no more veracity to the Hebrew Torah than the Koran or the Bible, or any other sacred text...

Nope, not a theologian, just interested in why people argue about it.

Musicmystery -> RE: Was jesus the messiah? (3/1/2010 11:31:22 AM)

I think no one has a poorer choice for a handle than this. Clearly you've jumped in here, as Thadius noted, not to discuss, but to bait, and from there to twist and dismiss as suits prolonging the ridiculous argument.

You're certainly no bodhisattva. You can't even spell it. I doubt you even appreciate what it means, judging from your misunderstanding presented so far.

The subjective knowledge game is a childish phase played by bored college students around a pile of hash. It's mental masturbation. Grow out of it.

When even the atheists think you're an idiot, time to take stock.

The proper spelling of it was already taken as a screen name. Maybe you could learn to think before you type something? You mean while bring nothing of worth to the conversation, and yet you pressume to insult me. Do you resort to insults rather than empiracle knowledge and reasoning because your own mental impotence prevents you from doing so?

mnottertail -> RE: Was jesus the messiah? (3/1/2010 2:08:45 PM)

well, you got his tack on it anyway

I persued a similar line, taking classes such as the psychology of religion, sociology of religion, and ethics of religion, but complemented this with specific classes on the world religions. I agree with your assesment that there is no veracity to the abrahamic texts, but it's best to know them so one can say why that is the case.

This is not something I would choose for a forum topic...

One, it takes a long time to type out well reasoned and researched posts to support a position... (I do not have that time, and I do not think most people on a BDSM site would want to devote that much time to this topic, could be wrong)

Most people here do not have the same knowledge base as people who took butt loads of classes on the subject

And whilst I agree it is nice to have theological background to whatever religion a person chooses to study, I would never choose Christianity... perhaps Taoism...

My masters thesis is going to be about sacral language used to describe national parks by those who use them... so it is partially religion/linguistics/ethnography... basically three branches of anthropology further complicated by the fact I am in an applied program[:D]

Edited to add, throw in a little bit of environmental anthropology into the mix....lol

Well it wasn't a bad guess, unless the proper spelling of meanwhile, presume, and empirical have been taken too. [:D]

Beat me to it, Kirata.

Why is it the ones flinging insults for four pages are outraged they might be insulted?

I'll stick by my comments as statements of fact, not insults:

Let's explore some of the requirments to be a messiah (annointed one) and see if jesus fullfilled any of them.

1) The messiah will be characterized by the peaceful co-existence of all people. (Isaiah 2:4)  Me... with occasional lapses of civility resulting in sever barbarism. We'll call that a check.

2) The jewish diaspora will end as the messiah will reunite all jews to their homeland (Isaiah 11:11-12; Jeremiah 23:8; 30:3; Hosea 3:4-5) I keep telling them to go back to Africa... if they listen it we'll call it a check plus.

3) The messiah will lead the entire world to Torah observance under Yaweigh (Isaiah 2:3; 11:10; Micah 4:2-3; Zechariah 14:9). I encourage everyone to die whilst in the middle of the most amazing orgasm... we'll call that a check plus plus.

4) He must be a member of the tribe of Judah (Genesis 49:10) and a direct male descendent of King David (I Chronicles 17:11, Psalm 89:29-38, Jeremiah 33:17, II Samuel 7:12-16) I banged quite a few the descending daughters... surly it rubbed off on me. Check plus again.

This is a small sampling of requirments, but it shall suffice. The queestion then is did jesus do any of these things? For #1 listed, no jesus has not lead the world to peace, and in fact quite the opposite. Christians have been involved with every major war and most of the genocides of the last 2000 yrs. What about #2? No, jesus did not free Isreal and the jewish diaspora was only worsened by christian followers blamming jews for jesus' death. As for 3, jesus changed the law of torah, repeatedly ignored it, and the religion founded on him is far from the jewish one, so that's out. As for the forth, jospeh wasn't his father and marry's lineage does not exist in the bible or elsewhere, so it would seem that jesus was not related to king david. So, for all the requirments listed, jesus failed.

The obvious conclusion then is that, no, jesus was not the messiah. But is proof positive FukinTroll is.

Well, he hasn't been around in about 2,000 years has he?
You'd think he'd stop by once in a while to say hello or to knock on someone's door and sit down on the front porch and sip some lemonade.
"So Jesus, how's things in Heaven?"
"Don't ask!"

Oh Popeye, look around you. Jesus might be right around the corner. Maybe if he was right there you may not know it.

MasterSlaveLA -> RE: Was jesus the messiah? (3/1/2010 10:35:25 PM)

For those who believe, no explanation is necessary...
For those who do not, no explanation is possible.

Yes, I believe He is the messiah.
