You don't see your posts as insulting? To diagnose and determine that 'they' are miserable, that they should be on meds etc seems really insulting and ignorant to me.

Apologies if I come across harshly but seriously.. I don't get the point of your OP at all.

i don't see how i'm being offensive or insulting, and i'm not diagnosing anyone.

what i am saying is that i see a lot of traits of this disorder and that there's people here who'd be happier having been diagnosed and given the tools to make them happier.

"miserable" is a strong word, and i shouldn't have used it if i knew it would trigger such strong emotion, but i do believe that "unhappy" or "discontent" still apply.

a little ignorant though, sure. i was wrong about pharmaceutical therapy. if i'm wrong about something, i'd rather be corrected and not be ignorant anymore than stay ignorant on the topic i started. and god knows i don't have much of a problem making an ass of myself, so why not let people right my misconceptions? ;)

you're coming off as a little harsh. not bitchy or anything - just a little harsh. the point of my post was, again, to get other people's opinion. i have a theory and want to air it out, i guess.

Bob what is your problem?

No one here is flaming anyone, no one is stirring up anything (although I bet you're going to do your darndest).

Camille, you got it right the first time:

"You don't see your posts as insulting? To diagnose and determine that 'they' are miserable, that they should be on meds etc seems really insulting and ignorant to me."

Do you think TPD hasn't taken into account the possibility of those he/she has in mind responding to this thread?

~smile~

This is a troll thread, clear as day.

Which is why you will find me sitting this out and enjoying yet another display of 'maturity' [;)]

I imagine every woman with a profile on this site would agree with a statement like, "Holy crap, there's a lot of men here with terrible online social skills, who are defensive as hell."  What I hear people expressing to you is a concern that you jump from that to a semi-diagnosis.  It's a little like saying, "That's so gay," if you don't like something, or "That's retarded," if you think something is silly.  You can expect that people with homosexuals or mentally disabled people in their families might bristle.

Overall, I think your posts have been awesome so far, and I don't think you "meant" anything by this thread.  Hopefully, other people will see that too -- though they may try to educate you anyway![;)]

i wanted to spark up a conversation on a theory i have. i'm not calling for blood or anything, lol.

tbd I don't think you meant it negatively either but that is how it came across to me. Sorry if I sounded harsh but I was having trouble switching tones between the forums I'm posting in tonight!

It sounded to me like you were basically saying 'Oh poor Aspies, all so very miserable in their little confused lives where they obsess day in/day out.. heya lets medicate them!!'. You likely didn't mean for that tone but that is how I read your OP.

don't apologize for your opinion. you have as much a right to one as i do, and just because we don't agree doesn't mean... something something something, you're smart enough to get where i'm going with this.

i really didn't mean that, and again, i have volunteered/worked with people who have asperger's, along with people who have a myriad of other developmental disorders. i can't stress enough how much of an expert i'm not: i just see common threads and wonder if other users notice.

i'm not the most emotive person online, unless i'm being an annoying jerkass, so i can see how people can get that from the op.

humbug! i'm trying to change it, but spazzing it completely. related note! i have a furry friend who's an anteater. i guess. he thinks he's an anteater on the inside? ehunno.

also, that chair is deceptive. the slightest ounce, and your ass is on the floor.

pyroaquatic started a thread about his asperger's syndrome a while back and he got great support: http://www.collarchat.com/m_3039321/tm.htm

And he is a delightful young man.

I would strongly suggest that you stop assuming that people are miserable. It says more about you than them.

i didn't start this thread to demean anyone, or make umbrella assumptions.

i just wanted to talk about a topic i thought was okay to talk about. i've admitted when i was wrong, and i've stood up for myself when i felt attacked. i'm silly, i'm silly as hell, but i'm not immature in the sense that you're eluding to.

i've noticed that you do that to a lot of people, so i'm not taking it personally. just... gah. not a troll thread. i'm not an asshole. i'm a genuine, honest person who wanted to talk.

i have been nice to you, multiple times.

I don't always chose my words so wisely neither, so in that light, if you say you didn't mean to demean anyone, I will believe you. But do you even see how your OP can be seen as an insult?

Oh and did you look at the thread? It is pretty interesting.

Oh Bob... where's the love and compassion? I see nothing trollish about this thread. I do however see a lot of straight talking and there isn't a thing wrong with that, especially when the straight talker's are working it all out. That sounds like a discussion to me. But then, you and I are very different, which is also allowed. I do believe in love in many ways, just as you do, but your concept of how it all plays out in the big picture is far different than my own view. So you wish to save it for one, which could be one who is hard to find because you don't give much anywhere else with your judgment and off center focus. But that too is my opinion. Isn't it nice that we are allowed those? Of course some opinions are more welcome than others. Which I am sure my opinion in your view isn't welcome. lol

Enjoy your maturity and your pop corn big fella.

If indeed someone does have asperger's syndrome, how nice are you for choosing to put them through public ridicule for a condition over which they have no control?

If no one is suffering from this illness, how nice are you for suggesting otherwise?

Troll thread, clear as day.

Psykic -> RE: asperger's epidemic on collarme? (2/28/2010 6:50:36 PM)

Oh, I totally agree. You know what other disorder I have noticed in the scene, male effeminate disorder. Men who suffer from it colloquially refer to it is being "gay". The suicide rate among adult sufferers has gone down in the last few decades, but it is still much higher than the general population, especially among adolescents. Hopefully someday we can get help for all of the people afflicted with this terrible mental illness.

Wait, what's that? Being gay isn't a mental illness, you say? They only have a higher rate of depression and suicide because they live in a society that doesn't understand or accept them?? Well gosh, don't I feel like a bigot for assuming that someone is mentally ill just because their brain is wired differently than mine.

The first two paragraphs there were sarcasm, for anyone who didn't catch that. As someone who has Aspergers Syndrome, has a significant other with Aspergers Sydrome, two close friends with Aspergers Syndrome, and hangs out on the blog of someone with Aspergers Syndrome (where many of those who comment have it as well), I can tell you that it is not an illness any more than being gay is. Aspies tend to get along fantastically well with each other, we just have trouble getting along with neurotypicals (people who aren't aspies/autistics). The only real handicap it seems to cause is an inability to relate to and understand normal people.

By the way, several of the symptoms you listed are things that I have never read/heard before, and have never observed from myself or other Aspies. In fact, only three of those seem remotely accurate. One of which being low self-esteem, which is, as I said before, caused by being an outcast. So really only two out of the eight are things that are actually directly a result of having Aspergers Syndrome. I would like to know what the source of your information is.

Oh, and if you really do think that it is an 'illness', than you need to remember that it is an illness that was had by Einstein, Newton, Ben Franklin, Nikoli Tesla, Mozart, Beethoven, Van Gogh, Henry Ford, Bill Gates, Shakespeare, Bobby Fisher, Thomas Edison, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Mary Curie, Emily Dickenson, and scores of other people who revolutionized their field. At least those are some of the people who are suspected of having Aspergers Syndrome. And they accomplished so much not in spite of having Aspergers Syndrome, but because of it.

juliaoceania -> RE: asperger's epidemic on collarme? (2/28/2010 6:50:43 PM)

Every forum I have ever read with a regular crowd has people that are certifiable on it...

These are the internets after all...

I would refrain from diagnosing people if I were you, no matter how tempting it is.... and believe me, I know it is tempting.

domiguy -> RE: asperger's epidemic on collarme? (2/28/2010 6:51:50 PM)

You are new out here and probably have a lot to learn about making posts. First off, your avatar. No one has ever gotten headaches from gazing at a shot of your boobs as your new avatar. The darker the nipples the more soothing the effect on the viewer...Odd? I know!!!

Secondly people don't like their disease to be specifically mentioned. It's nicer if you just kind of allude to the symptoms and then ask if any of the multitude of fucked up people that frequent this site are suffering from them.

Good luck!!!

Shit...Edited to add ~smiles~

camille65 -> RE: asperger's epidemic on collarme? (2/28/2010 6:53:07 PM)

tpd I don't think you had any bad intentions by starting this thread, it was just how you worded things that threw me off balance. That happens online very easily and is something that can be recovered. My suggestion (take that for what its worth!) is to pretty much ignore people who refuse to let you move on from unfortunate wording, which is also something that will invariably happen online. A lot.

You seem like a perfectly nice person from what I've seen so far and just about everyone has a rocky OP now n then!
