Sanity -> Idaho first to sign law against health care reform (3/18/2010 3:44:27 AM)

Forcing people to buy something is unconstitutional anyway.

BOISE, Idaho – Idaho is leading the charge in a states-rights push to defeat a proposal in Congress that would require people to buy health insurance, a key piece of reforms being pushed by President Barack Obama.

Republican Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter used a ceremony Wednesday afternoon to become the first governor to sign into law a measure requiring the state attorney general to sue the federal government over any such insurance mandates.

There's similar legislation pending in 37 other states, a point Otter stressed when asked if the bill he signed can succeed, given constitutional law experts are already saying federal laws would supersede those of states in a U.S. District Court fight.

"The ivory tower folks will tell you, 'No, they're not going anywhere,'" he told reporters. "But I'll tell you what, you get 36 states, that's a critical mass. That's a constitutional mass."

The state measures working their ways through statehouses from Missouri to South Carolina reflect a growing frustration with President Obama's health care overhaul, especially in Republican-dominated regions.

So I guess this will be repealed soon too.

Idaho Insurance Regulations

Auto insurance laws in Idaho dictate that all vehicles must have liability insurance that meets the mandatory minimum coverage amounts. Drivers are required to carry proof of their auto insurance policy while driving at all times. If a driver is found to be driving without proper coverage or proof of insurance, they can receive fines up to $75 from law enforcement. Repeat offenders may receive harsher punishments, such as having to prove financial responsibility to the state government for over a year.

Apples and oranges. Not everyone has to buy car insurance, do they.

Louve00 -> RE: Idaho first to sign law against health care reform (3/18/2010 4:13:49 AM)

[sm=agree.gif]  This is a very good point!  Sanity probably wasn't forced to buy auto insurance.  Just so happens he wanted it anyway, right?

thishereboi -> RE: Idaho first to sign law against health care reform (3/18/2010 4:16:08 AM)

Actually he is right. You don't have to get insurance, unless you plan on driving a car. And nobody has to drive a car.

Louve00 -> RE: Idaho first to sign law against health care reform (3/18/2010 4:17:35 AM)

True again.  So all those who don't want to be forced to buy it, can ride a bike.  Or walk.  I guess you could call it being forced to buy the bike....so its walk [:)]

Sanity -> RE: Idaho first to sign law against health care reform (3/18/2010 4:18:55 AM)

And then its not the Feds mandating I have insurance if I choose to drive.

This is more like forcing everyone to buy a car from Government Motors, anyway.

No it's not, it is a direct comparison that you want to ignore so you try to rationalize it as somehow being different.

How many people do you know that do not have a car?

If Idaho wants to.

Obviously either you et al on here never learned, have forgotten, or are ignoring that the U.S. Constitution does not grant the Federal government the authority to force anyone to buy anything, much less at risk of a fine and/or jail if they don't. That's the unconstitutional aspect of the Democrats healthcare reform.

Off the top of my head. The 2 guys who work at the local 7-11, my friends daughter who has never driven, 3 of my other friends neighbors who always need a ride somewhere and another friend of hers who she takes meals to, two of my cousins, and a guy I used to hang out with, who has since moved to Florida. Now when I lived in West Palm, I knew a lot more and could probably come up with others if I thought about it, but I haven't had any coffee yet, so I will stop here.

Mandatory vs voluntary is indeed an apples and oranges comparison, no matter how you try to obfuscate/spin it.

Let's try a comparison here.

Liability auto insurance is required in most states.  If someone driving uninsured hits you and causes damage to your vehicle or personal injury to you or the other occupants then your insurance company pays.  So you are subsidizing the person who chooses to drive uninsured.

It's no different with health insurance.  People will have accidents, they will get sick.  If they are not insured it is everyone else who is subsidizing their irresponsibility.

Repeating the same lame comparison doesn't change anything. No one is forced to drive a car. Most people choose to, but it is still a choice.

Which is exactly the point, a car in this society is not an option but a necessity in most places.

So they don't drive, they just rely on you.

Very generous, but I thought conservatives had that "stand on your own two feet" philosophy.

tazzygirl -> RE: Idaho first to sign law against health care reform (3/18/2010 5:14:33 AM)

Nor is everyone forced (mandated) to purchase this insurance.

You really can't read can you? Where did I say any of the people mentioned relied on me for a ride? Now I did mention 3 of the 10 who always want a ride from my friend, but that does not effect me and the others get around on their own. Oh and 8 out of the 10 years I lived in florida, I didn't have a car either. I used public transportation and had no need to buy car insurance. Guess it's not that hard to stand on your own feet is it, or even to walk somewhere with them.

RacerJim -> RE: Idaho first to sign law against health care reform (3/18/2010 5:23:13 AM)

On top of being unconstitutional because it forces everyone to purchase something, the revenue gathering aspects of the Democrats healthcare reform become effective immediately upon enactment but the healthcare providing aspects don't become effective until FOUR YEARS later and, therefore, any/every financial analysis of the Democrats' healthcare reform which doesn't take the latter into account is an out and out fraud.
