95,775 – 104,481 Iraqi civilians have been killed since the war started, that includes those killed by insurgents. For all those members of these boards who have never walked a patrol in a hot zone, I envy you. Having done that in 1982-1983 in a nice little place called Beirut, I can tell you that when you see a bunch of people who LOOK like they are carrying weapons gets the pucker factor going to maximum. If you draw fire and those people look like they have weapons, you will put out rounds, just as soon as the patrol commander tells you to. Sorry folks, but when I had incoming rounds buzzing around my head, I am going to shoot first and ask questions later. My opinion is that I can answer charges later, and if it was clear that there were rounds incoming, I am going to be cleared. People are caught in the crossfire, if they are smart they are going to find some sort of cover and hug the ground. If they are still standing up when the firing starts, they are going to get hit. Sorry to be so blunt, but those are the facts of life. Finally, I am sorry, but my hide is more important in that situation than anyone else's except those guys in my unit.
