That reminds me of one of my favorite jokes.... An officer from the Department of Natural Resources was patrolling the forest one day when he happened to come upon a man who was roasting something on a spit. Curious, he decided to stop and check it out. "Excuse me Sir, but what are you cooking there?", said the officer. "Oh just Red Tailed Hawk", replied the man. Astonished and infuriated the officer said, "Sir, you can't cook Red Tailed hawks, they are an endangered species! I'm afraid I am going to have to issue you a citation." As he was writing the citation he asked the man, "Just out of curiousity, have you ever cooked one of these before?", to which the man replied "Oh yes!". "Well, what exactly does a Red Tailed hawk taste like?" asked the officer. He was shocked when the man replied......."Oh, kind of like a cross between a Bald Eagle and Snowy Owl."

I'm down there once or twice per year, theres an historic dam and power plant that allows tours to come through, there is some good fishing on the Snake River there, you can boat and swim above the dam and the desert canyon is very scenic. The bird watching alone makes it worth the trip, and everything else is just a bonus. Heres a picture of the area I found on the net just now: [image]http://farm1.static.flickr.com/166/362023576_f594e4f35a.jpg[/image] On further reflection, I've been driving around on business and thinking about it all morning, the hawk from my pasture wasn't nearly as large as the eagle I saw down at Swan Falls (aka Snake River Birds of Prey area) one year, so I suppose that its probably a Swainsons'. Wow, that is pretty! Sounds and looks like a great place to visit. Was the eagle you saw before a Golden Eagle? I think I read they are bigger than Bald Eagles. The eagle I saw looked to be about 3 ft, from head to the end of its tail feathers, perched. I missed watching it take off; between looking through the camera lens and doing a duck and cover maneuver. Lol Kim

The eagle I saw before was definitely an eagle. There are lava boulders down there below the dam that are the size of houses, and I was following a trail through those boulders on my way to a fishing hole that I know. Thats a big river and the current in the area is deadly powerful, by the way... As I was getting close to the river I rounded one of these large boulders and I surprised the eagle as it was eating a carp. It was huge! Scary big, maybe the size of a big dog - and I was right on it, as surprised as it was. It instantly leaped into the air and began beating its wings, and I remember feeling the wind that it created. It was a hot day and it felt kind of good. That was years ago, and I had forgotten about that one until I was driving around yesterday thinking about the hawk. Eagles have a very distinctive head and I remember the look it gave me, though its not all exactly like it was yesterday. There are rattlesnakes and lizards there, rabbits... and a whole lot of sage brush.

I got to see a bald eagle snatch a trout out of a lake while fishing in the high country the other day. I didn't see it at first, I heard it - there was a huge splash and when I looked over it looked like a heron was taking flight, then I realized what I was seeing. The eagle went right into the water like a duck might! I didn't know they did that, I thought they stayed above the water. Unfortunately I didn't have the camera at the ready at the time. It was great to see though, it was pretty close to me. Maybe fifty yards out? Then when it flew away it crossed over in front of me. It was an awesome sight! It’s very exhilarating; isn’t it? So cool that you got to see one. Though, it seems like you get to see all kinds of exhilarating stuff… couple more really nice pics. That’s awesome! [:D] I didn’t know they dive, either. I haven’t seen much of the felcons lately, they’re usually somewhere other than where the camera is pointing. The update says one has fledged. A second tried, but ended up gliding to the ground, where fish and game picked it up and took it back to the nesting box. I’m gonna miss watching them. Kim

They've switched to the camera that shows more of the ledge. http://www.peregrinefund.org/falconcam/ I just saw one of the juveniles hopping away from the cam, but you're right, the viewing season is almost over. Sometimes they hang out for a while over downtown Boise, and I get to see a lot of them. Here are some birds I saw while at an outdoor music festival in Sun Valley Idaho last week, just before I went over Galena Summit to go camping, hiking and fishing: They looked like hawks, but they could have been crows I guess, they were too far away to really tell for sure. There were at least seven of them... The music was great, Molly Venter was there, along with Zap Mama, SambaDa and the Pimps of Joytime... a few others, too. Awesome festival! It was a great time. We had a pair of bald eagles nesting here, people would stop on the highway to look at them, but they haven't been seen since the hurricane. [:)]

They were switching back and forth, between the camera in the box and the one on the ledge, for a while, but the youngsters seemed to prefer being further down the ledge; greener and cleaner pastures, perhaps… lol Which brings me to a question that has been nagging at me for a while… is there an awning over the sidewalk below the box, or something? How many people get bombed from above? [8\|] The birds in the picture remind me of the turkey vultures we have around here. Could they be some type of vulture? Sounds really nice. [:D] Kim

A few weeks back as I was at home watching the falcon cam and pointing out to someone the peculiar way that the nestlings backed up to the ledge and ejected their bodily waste over the side as if they were little canons and I thought the same thing you must be thinking - what about the pedestrians down below? So the next day I very cautiously walked that stretch of sidewalk and found that the sidewalk immediately below the nest is surprisingly very clean. I think the reason why must be that the nest is very high and the wind and gravity are combining to scatter their wastes among the street and the thirteen ledges and rows of office windows below the nest as well as the landscaping between the building and the sidewalk to the extent that its not a problem for those mostly unaware people who walk beneath the falcon's nest. Below is a digital blowup of one of the birds that was circling the very tall hill above the festival, and it could very well be a vulture I suppose. There was a group of youngsters climbing the hill at the time, and so I was wondering if the climbers might have been disturbing a nest or some nests. Lol… that is exactly what I was thinking; adapted from the movie “Tremors”, the term ‘butt blasters’ came to mind early on. giggles (Picturing you checking the situation out.) Interesting that not much waste hits the ground under the nest. pondering planned, or happy coincidence? It was just that there were so many in a group that made me think vulture, otherwise, I haven’t a clue as to what they could be. Kim

Eagles and vultures are from the same family if I recall correctly, those feather "fingers" at the tip of the wings are a feature they share. That looks like a turkey vulture to me. You're both probably right. After I used Adobe to zoom in on the one that I posted I decided its fairly obvious that they're turkey vultures.
