I personally don't see much need for protection in an online sense. It is pretty easy to block and delete, turn off the computer, etc. That said, there are instances offline where it can benefit. There was an instance of it this last weekend at a bigger event I went to. I've got friends who vend at events and they brought a friend with them. The friend was having a wonderful time, no problems until Friday night in the dungeon. She was watching scenes and enjoying herself when a woman approached her and said hi. They talked small talk for a bit and the woman asked how she identified, top, sub, etc. When she answered sub, the woman wanted to top her and she replied they could discuss it, but no promises it would happen. The woman then pointed out her toy bag, told her to bring it and walked off. Being a nice person, she did so and ended up by a spanking bench where the woman had stopped. The woman said she thought this would do and she replied you mean to talk? And the woman told her no, to play and instructed her to strip. She then said no and left the dungeon to get away from her. She was nervous about the incident and told the master of the family she was with about it. He in turn grabbed one of the collars in their store and put it on her and told her if she had any problems with anyone to direct them to him and tell them she is under his protection. She had no further problems with anyone after that and very much enjoyed her weekend and gave the collar back at the end of it. So yeah, there are instances when I can see the validity of it, but I think too that it is another thing that tends to get both misused and overused like mentoring and under consideration do.
