tazzygirl -> RE: African complicity in the slave trade.... (4/26/2010 3:21:08 AM)

I have asked you two questions. I will ask again Silence

1) Where are the reparation talks for native americans?

2) Where will the money come from and who will be entitled?

kiwisub12 -> RE: African complicity in the slave trade.... (4/26/2010 3:40:30 AM)

I just have to add one more rediculous thought to this whole thread , and more specifically to tazzygirls comment - on reparations - do the descendants of white people taken into slavery by Native Americans qualify for money?

tazzygirl -> RE: African complicity in the slave trade.... (4/26/2010 3:49:45 AM)

Or the native american slaves to native americans?

How about the chinese who came here to build railroads and were treated like slaves?

How long does a race have to be "held" to qualify for reparations?

DomYngBlk -> RE: African complicity in the slave trade.... (4/26/2010 3:59:12 AM)

So browsing the majority of comments...one would assume that there is nothing wrong with holding slaves as long as the people selling them to you are complicit in the sale. Did I about get that right?

Jeffff -> RE: African complicity in the slave trade.... (4/26/2010 4:07:40 AM)

Not quite. The people selling them must be complicit AND the same race.

DomYngBlk -> RE: African complicity in the slave trade.... (4/26/2010 4:16:24 AM)

Well of course, that makes it all better.

eyesopened -> RE: African complicity in the slave trade.... (4/26/2010 4:16:40 AM)

And in the United States, blacks also owned slaves.  In many cases it would have been considered "benevolent" with freed slaves purchasing slaves in order to free them. But there were many who purchased slaves for the labor on their own plantations, no different than white slave owners.

Here's my question.  Will paying reparations finally put this horrible thing behind us?  Will it heal racial relations?  Will it make us stronger as a nation?  Will we ba able to kiss and make up and be a united nation?  Or will it just keep racism alive?  And by racism I mean the racism against whites as well.  Will it end or perpetuate racism?
If it will end it, then lets pay up and get on with fixing this country!  Together.  Side by side.  As Americans without hyphens!

DomYngBlk -> RE: African complicity in the slave trade.... (4/26/2010 4:23:23 AM)

Read your own articles? Those slaves were bought to be freed. Why go to such lengths to make yourself suddenly feel better.....Guilty much? Reparations or something at least symbolic would help erase the disadvantages of being a Man of Color in this country for 400 years.

Read what I wrote.  That's exactly what I said!  I do not feel guilty because I had done nothing to feel guilty about.  But I'm white so I must be horrible and evil and complicite in all the disadvantages of People of Color just because of the color of my skin.

You have answered my question.  Reparations will not stop your hatred of Colorless people.  Carry on.

Obviously there is no amount of money that will keep People of Color from racism.

DomYngBlk -> RE: African complicity in the slave trade.... (4/26/2010 4:44:03 AM)

Sorry, you are the only one with problems with skin color and a countries ultimate responsibility for how it treats its inhabitants. This is no difference then getting some sort of equal treatment for Natives and extends to the obvious spouts of racism that is on the uptick with Mexican Americans. Hide your head in the sand and call names if you want but it won't change the fact that there is a great divide in this country developing. There is a party of white people - Republican...and a party for the rest of us - Democrat.

LadyEllen -> RE: African complicity in the slave trade.... (4/26/2010 4:47:15 AM)

The disadvantages to which you refer - which I am confident exist from time to time and place to place, though I cannot experience them - have been rectified and resolved by way of the utter transformation of the legal framework of the USA to provide support, protections and remedies.

The problem is that the prejudiced and those practicing discrimination are confident that their victims cannot access remedy (or, in some cases will not) as provided for by the law. Provide such access, publicly funded and with a mission to stamp out the disadvantages and that confidence shall soon disappear.

Provide such access too so that anyone who finds themselves wronged may access justice - whilst being "of colour" may carry special disadvantages, so too are special disadvantages requiring redress carried by virtue of being of many sub-populations.

Oh FFS!  I brought up a historical fact and you call me a racist and a Republican.  You counter with your own racism.  That's what I'm talking about.  It will never end.  No matter what us whites do it will never end.   I am asking what it will take to stop it.  When can we be Americans without hypens?  When can we be together as one?  It seems like it can never happen.  Not because I'm not willing.  I would do whatever it takes to stop it but it will never end.

You have never read anything else I have ever written.

Yes.  Lable me if it makes you feel better.

DomYngBlk -> RE: African complicity in the slave trade.... (4/26/2010 4:57:31 AM)

I think what you miss here is that there isn't that there are so many actual people that are intent on keeping a minority from access. Instead what we have is institutionalized "racism for a better word that gives the majority advantage.

Take for instance our tests for obtaining entrance into University. These tests are administered even handedly to anyone that wants to take them. However, the problem comes in with who actually designs the test and the questions that are on such a test. All such exams in the US were developed by the majority and the most economically advantaged of that majority. The tests are of a nature that most questions are slanted so that that slice of the majority will be able to answer them easier therefore creating higher scores for themselves. This then leads them to be able to attend the more prestigeous schools ....etc. etc. etc. ......The problems are not overt at first glance. Still the results are the same.

LadyEllen -> RE: African complicity in the slave trade.... (4/26/2010 5:00:20 AM)

Do you have anything to support the assertion that African Americans are unable to learn the same material as their European counterparts and/or recall it at examination?

E

DomYngBlk -> RE: African complicity in the slave trade.... (4/26/2010 5:09:35 AM)

Again, you miss the point. It isn't about ability to learn. It is about what is taught and then what is given on the test. If I was wrong there would be no need for endless amounts of "Pre-Testing" classes given for these tests. The questions are/were developed by "Ivy League" types in order for those types to do the best on the tests. Again, it isn't overt in action it is about what is ingrained in a system.

I can see you are wanting to feel picked upon no matter what is said to you today. I didn't call you names. I simply stated that you seem to have a problem with skin color. I did not say you were republican, I simply stated where the party system is going in the US. It is simple facts.

I gave you what I thought should be done to rectify historical injustices. you can accept or reject. It isn't going to matter much since neither of us run things.

There is plenty each of us can do in our daily lives to make it better for all. Give of yourself and your time to make things better. The problem is. We don't do it enough.

eyesopened -> RE: African complicity in the slave trade.... (4/26/2010 5:16:51 AM)

Question regarding testing.  My offspring went to public schools.  I didn't specifically ask but according to my kids, they attended exactly the same classes and were taught exactly the same material as everyone else.  The demographics of their high school was 66% African American, 31% White, 3% "Other".   How then were the majority put at a disadvantage when it came to testing?

DomYngBlk -> RE: African complicity in the slave trade.... (4/26/2010 5:24:38 AM)

The information would be the same as given to everyone at that school. Would think there would be a typical bell curve scores resulting from it. However, take that district versus kids that maybe go to Choate School in the Northeast. No contest. All the Choate kids scored higher than students from your offsprings schools. Why? It is in what is taught. Amount of money spent per student, the teacher/student ration. Does that matter? Well yes, since most if not all of Choate Graduates end up in an Ivy League school which then leads to a Prominent position in Gov't or Business.

vincentML -> RE: African complicity in the slave trade.... (4/26/2010 5:26:47 AM)

We have come a far distance since the day when lynchings occurred commonly and the President sanctioned a march by the KKK terrorists down Pennsylvania Avenue. Too bad you will not acknowledge that. You paint us broadly with the lingering racism of a small fringe who themselves are frightened by their diminishing economics. Yes, Latinos are disadvantaged and stung by racism. But rural whites are also disadvantaged by poor education, poor medical care and faulty nutrition. You think there are no white ghettos? No amount of reparations will erase the historical stain. But reparations reside in the available opportunities which so many people of color have discovered.

These things have already happened.... the Great Society programs, the Civil Rights Act, Brown vs Topeka Bd of Ed, federal marshals in Little Rock, affirmative action, formal Congressional apology. I mean, wtf? What more do you want? The disadvantages persist in your own mind only. Time to stop making excuses. Time to throw away the wimpy crutch of reparations I think and stand like the proud man that you are and fuck-all those sorry ass people who keep hatred in their fearful hearts. Living well is the best reply.

DomYngBlk -> RE: African complicity in the slave trade.... (4/26/2010 5:37:37 AM)

Ok, lets tick these off...Great Society programs helped who exactly? White Americans in large measure. Civil Rights Act? Oh great thanks we can officially VOTE since we were already citizens...Brown vs. Board of Ed....great we get to go to school where we want. What repair was given in these things? I can't say much.....Then Affirmative Action? There were famous court cases that brought down the effectiveness and Reagan pretty much stopped any movement on that front.

From what I read you are saying that we should just shut up and accept our lot. We've been offered all the possible avenues to improve ourselves and that if we haven't done it it is our fault? Thats incredible in itself. And as far as living well? The unemployment rate in the African American community is well over 30% is that equality of opportunity?
