Personally I'm torn between lib-dems & UKIP for my vote.

The UKIP make the EU their reason for being....or rather withdrawl from the EU.

The Lib Dems are about as pro-European as you're going to find.

A touch surprised to hear your choice is between those two.

The Lib Dems do very well on the issues that really matter to me......

Not really interested in climate change and don't agree with them on the EU......but those aren't so important to me so I can let them go....

On the plus side....

Amnesty for illegal immigrants living here 10 years and having them pay into the coffers (never mind the conservative fear of this enticing immigrants).....what a great idea....and bucking the trend of the climate of fear.......that's what we need...politics based on optimism rather than politics based on the fear of what could happen in a worst case scenario......

Reduced spend on defence and nuclear weapons....

Attention paid to civil liberties.....

Attention paid to the poorest socio-economic groups in the country.....

They've got my vote.....unless the polls suggest it will be a close run thing between Labour and the Tories.....and then I'll defect to Labour........when needs must.

I have a very similar take on it as you NG, I figure no party is going to totally match your views, I think the Liberal democrats have hit the issues that I think are the most important better than the rest. So like you I overlook europe in favour of immigration policy, banking, trident etc etc

Hello Lilly.......do you live in an area where your vote will matter? On the banking issue...what are you in favour of? Just curious :-)

Banking, I want them split, I dont need a fancy pants bank who take risks, I like the idea of splitting investment banks and just normal every day banks for current accounts etc.

Yeah we are a tory area but the second has always been Liberal Democrats, I am hoping that this time enough people have been woken up to their policies and they could get in

Thank goodness its the last week...time that my ex will know if he will be re-elected again as councillor or not and once it is over (one way or another) he at last has more time again to meet up If I would not vote for his party I would not vote over here as to me it does not matter. Attached to vote to I feel back home, as it being a responsibility for me in my country, but over here it just does not feel to me like that...so I do back up my ex' party due to him, otherwise I would not go, as he knows. He kinda pushed me last time verbally to get my butt up and vote

My area is the same as yours Lilly. Always Conservative with some votes for the Liberal. I can no longer bring myself to vote Labour.

NG. I think you are right to look at those issues you find most important to you. Do you worry that once in power, those you voted for will change track though ? This happens so often I have lost faith with both Conservative and Labour.

PoliteSub, I think thats always going to be a problem, but for me one of the most important things that this election can bring is PR and the Lib Dems can't go back on that, its basically the cornerstone of their values.

I think as well that the Lib Dems are being far more honest about their position, I have seen Clegg say sorry a few times and admit he was wrong (about the Euro for example) and also they have explained their cuts far more than the other two, that to me is a start.

The lack of honesty in Anerin not taking responsibility for 'Cromwell sticking all the protestants in Northern Ireland'?

I've tried to be reasonably polite, but I can not come up with any useful comment in reply to such overwhelming lack of knowledge. I suggest you give up on this discussion.

So then the Irish revolution was simply a misunderstanding on their part? You were really just trying to help them?

Apologies for getting off the election topic.

What do you know of the Irish revolution ? What do you know of Chrurchill sending the british Fleet to Belfast just prior to WW1, because the protestants had armed for a civil war. What do you know of the thousands of Catholics who joined the British army at that time ? Like i keep telling you, there is a bigger picture to all this.

Irish Catholics joined your forces? Oh ok. Well so did the Canadians  "join" the Brits too even when they rioted against it.

So what you are saying is that you are what sorted them and they should be grateful for the pleasure?

I notice you didnt explain how you would have partitioned India. Your comment above is both shallow and simplistic and misses the big picture, as I said in my post. Sure, the Empire wasnt perfect, but it wasnt all bad either.

I wouldn't have gotten into the partition of India since I wouldn't have conquered and subdued it either. I would have left them to sort it out and helped broker peace if I could.

Humor me. What part of the British Empire was good? The part where you raped and plundered fortunes in far away lands and brought them back to London?

History really isn't that simple, most of us are not proud of the Empire in and of itself, but all countries have rather shady aspects of their past. It is nothing at all to do with the election though.

When were you voting labour? No offense intended, but you always tend to strike me as rather high tory. Were you one of the people who switched parties during Blair's first couple of terms?

Your right. However, where this does effect your election is in world issues where Europe as washed its hands of the former colonies and are not willing to become part of any solution.

Washed our hands? How exactly?

Its been argued that most other European colonial powers behaved reprehensibly when they lost their imperial territories, but it would be utterly unfair and incorrect to lump the UK in with that group. And anything we gained from Empire - note that even in the heyday it was not the case that Empire was always and everywhere profitable -  has been more than repaid since. That what we have given in support has been wasted by generations of corrupt leadership in the newly independent nations of former Empire is hardly our fault.

But Aneirin makes the best point - that we are peasants - our ancestors just as we today did not set the agenda, direct the policies or gain a thing from it all - in fact if anything our ancestors suffered for it all too if anyone did. I for one will not listen to your misinformed and off topic ranting on this subject and at the same time do not feel willing either to defend the aristos et al at whom your ranting should be directed.

Since you don't want to read my misinformed rants I will take it you won't be reading this either. Washed your hands.....India/Pakistan/Bang - Iraq - Palestine - SA - Zimbabwe - Nigeria ......need I go on? I've had similar discussions with other Europeans and it just isn't something that the populace there can admit or want to own up to. You are similar to them.

@Gent, I'm the same as you with europe & climate change, but also very much against PR in the house of commons. So if lib-dems stand a chance of winning here, I'll vote for them....if not, I don't want to aid their (IMO erroneous) argument about getting so many votes for so few seats to help PR, and I'll vote UKIP as a protest to more euro skepticism. If you're voting for someone who stands no chance of winning, that's pretty much a protest vote...UKIP, europe, BNP, immigration, greens, warming, looney, politicians, and lib-dems....PR.

I'm actually rather cautious about their immigration plans too, but as it'll be a coalition there's no worry that they'll actually pass it this parliament, so it's all good.

@DomY....helped broker peace? you seem to have less and less idea what you're talking about with each post.

@DomY "India/Pakistan/Bang - Iraq - Palestine - SA - Zimbabwe - Nigeria"

India Pakistan & Bangladesh are well progressing democracies, the only notable democracies in the region (afghan to the west, china north, indonesia east).....they would not be so had they not been part of the British (or some other European) Empire. You may also want to look into the definition of 'conquered' in this context. Iraq was taken by the British for a short time after its then owners sided with the Germans in WW1, previously it was mostly just an area that the various middle eastern empires conquered. Palestine is an american problem, SA&Nigeria are two of the most prospering nations in Africa, and Zimbabwe used to be...its descent into madness can hardly be blamed on any europeans.

I DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN when you talk about admitting or owning up or washing hands. What the fuck are you talking about?

DomY, makes some good points.

Tho- the forces that exploit are more-so the central banks- which have an incredible grip on the US.

Will any of the parties deal with the monetary system?

Labour, particularly Brown, wants an international transaction tax on banks, to cut down on fast dealing back and forth.
Lib-dems intend to split up the customer account side of banks into separate businesses from investment banking, so investment banks aren't taking risks with customers cash.

Cons....I don't know, they've been fairly vague tbh. They've talked about going ahead with the transaction tax even if the other big economies weren't doing it to, but they won't actually do that...I assume, too foolish.

If by monetary system you mean switch back to using metal as currency, then no.

If you'd care to explain DomYs good points to me, I'd be happy to listen.

I am not here to humour your ignorance. If you think I am lying about Catholics joining the British army in 1914, as implied in your other post, do some research or stfu.
