Not only that but the fact that US Corporations use the H1 to keep pay for talented professionals such as Engineers and Programmers low by bringing offshore workers. Of course, they add insult to injury by claiming we don't produce enough talented people to fill the need.....Which is obviously a bunch of shit.  If what they say is true then a US company wouldn't have to patent a product because the China or India would already have produced such a product. Its all a game with Corporations holding all the cards......The people need to stand up and stand up now

It's almost too damn late, shannie

I know, same with nurses.  Instead of allowing the free market to work within national boundaries (wages would go up, companies would offer incentives, etc.) -- they just flood the American job market with nurses from the Philippines and etc.

And yet, people are only angry because unskilled foreign workers are "illegal" (as if their compliance with bureaucratic red tape would make any difference to the American economy).  There is a lot more at stake than that for the American middle class.  It's the loss of middle class jobs, the negative effect on wages and competition -- all of which is caused by unchecked LEGAL immigration.
shannie rocks!  shannie rocks!

They did the same thing here in the county I work in with teachers from the Phillippines.
Now teachers are being laid off, and I went to an in-service last week and the majority of teachers there were from the Phillippines.
I sat at a table with another Black teacher and a couple of White teachers, and we surely were in the minority.

Anyway, I agree with you 100%.
PLEASE look at a thread I started a few months ago.

Considering that there is only ONE, repeat ONE sure fire way to keep the border secure, and that involves razor wire, land mines, and other anti personnel devices.  Fences can be cut, or tunneled under, so surface mines would be useless.

However, seismic detectors could pick up the sound of digging and a large demo charge would cave the tunnel in.

DarkSteven -> RE: proposed immigration bill includes national ID (4/30/2010 4:31:06 PM)

Currently, to get hired as an engineer, I must produce my SSN, my birth certificate, and a DL.  As required by law.

I fail to see why some national identity card will work when the above is already required by law.

If you cannot make the current program work, don't come to me telling me that another program will.

I guess I must be wearing my rose colored glasses today [8|]  I've said in the past that you can find a link on the internet to back up whatever you want to believe....

DO IMMIGRANTS REDUCE THE WAGES OF U.S. CITIZENS?
Since the 1990s, many academic studies have attempted to assess the extent to which immigration affects the earnings of U.S. workers. Although the findings of those studies vary widely—some discern no impact whatsoever while others conclude that immigration dramatically hurts natives—a consensus has begun to emerge that the truth lies somewhere in between. It appears increasingly likely that immigration has somewhat reduced the wages of native-born workers, with less-skilled and less-educated individuals experiencing the most significant declines.
The most extensive study of this subject released to date is an August 2003 report by Pia M. Orrenius and Madeline Zavodny, researchers at the Federal Reserve Banks of Dallas and Atlanta, respectively. [2] Their conclusions:
  • For service-related and professional workers, immigration has had little impact on wages. If anything, increases in the number of newly arriving immigrants actually have slightly positive effects.

  • For manual laborers, increases in the share of newly arrived immigrants have no statistically significant negative impact on wages; but increases in the share of immigrants who adjust their immigration status after they have been in the United States—for example, from student or tourist visas (which do not permit employment) to green cards—have a small negative effect.

  • The annual wages of low-skilled native workers are about 2.4 percent below where they would be otherwise as a result of the presence of immigrant workers.

Studies by Harvard economist George Borjas, an outspoken advocate of stronger immigration restrictions, have found much more substantial negative effects on the earnings of native workers. His research concluded that between 1980 and 2000, when immigration increased the labor supply of working men by 11 percent in the United States, that influx reduced the average annual wage of native workers by around 3.2 percent. The wage reductions varied significantly depending on the educational level of the worker: a decline of 8.9 percent for high school dropouts, 4.9 percent for college graduates, 2.6 percent for high school graduates, and little change for workers with some college. [3] (Borjas conducted a follow-up study using similar methodology that concluded that immigration reduced the average annual earnings of native-born men by an estimated $1,700, or 4 percent; among natives without a high school education, the wage reduction was 7.4 percent.) [4]
A number of studies conducted in the early to mid-1990s, which contrasted earnings levels in different locations rather than looking at national data, generally detected little or no impact on the wages of native workers. [5] Methodological shortcomings of most of those studies, however, have led most academics to conclude that their results may be somewhat misleading. [6]

Depends on what you want to believe....or how you want to depress yourself, make yourself feel better, I don't know.  I make it my business to stay in the positive.  Not because I like wearing rose colored glasses, but because I'm not ready to "migrate" to another country, which so many feel is what this country is coming to.  And if America is becoming so bad that you can't get a job for all the legal immigrants that come here, then migration may suit your purpose? That's what they say about the hundreds of thousands of shipping containers that are constantly pouring into this country laden with Chinese junk.  "They can't be searched, it's too expensive, it's impractical."  But it's not impractical to search the citizens of this country every time they walk into a public building.  Or tax the hell of out of us. Or check our "ID" ever time we turn around. It seems like the only thing that is ever practical is putting more impositions on US citizens.

So if I can't "stay positive" about my country being pimped out to multi-national corporations, I should leave my country?  I'll go down fighting before I do either.

Thanks for links Marini. Yes, outsourcing eclipses the so-called "illegal immigration" issue when it comes to the effect on the American economy.  But it's something the American public hasn't been "cued" to debate.

Not at all, shannie.  Thats not the attitude I mean.  In fact, I believe in fighting for my country, too.  I don't believe in bashing it.  That said, I realize this is more than a bash to you, but at the same time, you indicate having no intention to make yourself more marketable as an employee.  I intend to (and always place myself) in a position of value to my employer.  There is saying by Elbert Hubbard that goes "One machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men. No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man."  Replace the word machine with legal immigration and it makes my point.  I, as an American, am more capable of conveying a thought or creating a bond with an American.  We're wired the same way, there are no language or communication barriers.  I have so many more advantages over an immigrant.  And when it comes to me getting a job over him, I'm going to use every one of those advantages.  All he has on me is education.  I have the ability to improve my education, if thats holding me back.

Are those requirements because you would be working as an engineer?
I have not had a job in quite some time but all they ever required was a SS number.

Actually, I'm not against immigration.  I'm against illegal immigration.

You don't mind hundreds of thousands, or millions, of foreigners flooding the job market here -- as long as they have a permit to do so?

Wow, thanks a lot. What about those of us who moved over here for love, and who would rather not take over your underpaid, overworked, jobs, away from you [8|] ? And what about those of us that are here perfectly legally, and that have to jump through the loops of a tortuous and illogical system, paying thousands of dollars, by the way, for the privilege of getting somewhere in this labyrinthian insanity?

It's sickening and tiring: every single fucking time a country goes through a bad time, some people choose to blame immigrants for the fuckups that have occurred. Every single fucking time! I've witnessed it everywhere I've lived.

It's all very, very ugly - immigrants are NOT to blame for the fuckups.

Thing is, the places I was in before, I was an actual citizen. Now that I'm on the receiving end of the hatred, it feels a tad different, but philosophically, I know that it's all the same shit, whether it comes from ignorant French, British, Swiss or American morons *sigh*.

Oh, I agree. I think those who blame the immigrants are completely misguided.  It's not the immigrants (legal or illegal) who are profiting from the "scheme of things."   I was referring to the schism in the American consciousness wherein the masses are falsely incited about "illegal aliens stealing their jobs," while, at the same time, skilled workers are permitted to to come into the country in unlimited numbers.

Well, there is no limit on the number of Mexicans and Canadians who can come here, legally, to fill those jobs.

popeye1250 -> RE: proposed immigration bill includes national ID (4/30/2010 7:27:44 PM)

Shannie, this "global economy" doesn't value "labor" anymore! And it doesn't matter what "type" of labor either!
I imagine countries like China and India graduate professions like Accountants, Engineers, Teachers, Lawyers, Nurses, Doctors and Managers by the hundreds of thousands every year.
Maybe millions! What happens to the law of supply and demand if Western countries are the "beneficiaries" of just ten percent of that?
If I'm a Manager and I'm looking to hire Accountants and only two or three apply for the job I'm going to pay what is standard for Accountants, these days anywhere from $60- 80K entry level. If I have 50 Accountants lined up in the waiting room I'm going to offer considerably less.
The middle class is indeed under attack in this country.
