Perhaps some Terry Goodkind. His 'Sword of Truth' series was wondrous, amazing, eyeopening, and spell binding. Kept me on the edge of my seat through the whole series. His first book, Sword of Truth, was a little slow to get started (2-3 chapters), but it was all character building. But once he got going, OH MY!!. THE best books (note the plural) I have ever read, and I would highly recommend them to anyone. Right now I am reading "The Law of Nine" by Terry Goodkind, which has proven to be another great work by him.

Hello Everybody!

Official announcement here...

I have found something I want to challenge people to do...

Paulo Coehlo has offered to give 50 of his books to different programs around the world for folks who can't afford books. (I follow him on facebook).

I would like to challenge you all to get one of his books, read it, and pass it on

OR

get one of his books and donate it to a program that you think could use it.

The other thing is... I want to start up the book club... seriously. It just didn't work last time. I have an idea of how to make it work out a little easier though. There's a thing on Gmail where we could all discuss certain topics... The yahoo thing didn't work.

Anyway... anyone interested? I found a really great website for reading books online.

What'dya say?

I would love to be part of a book club. I just gave 20 boxes of books to a local center starting a library in a new housing unit for women transitioning from homeless to employed. No more that I can part with at this time.

I don't know Coelho. Must get a copy of the Alchemist.

I just finished Walter Mosely's newest, A Long Fall. New detective series starring Leonid McGill. Great book and like most of his, rather gritty.

I am definitely interested in being a part of the book club Sunny! Not sure how it would work, but I would love to try it out.

I just finished the latest in the House of Night series (which is my daughter's, but I love it too). I am currently reading two different books that my friend Luanne gave me. I am about halfway through each one. The first is The Demon Under the Microscope by Thomas Hager. The second is Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. I honestly didn't think I would be interested in The Demon Under the Microscope, but I decided to read the first chapter since she was nice enough to give it to me. I was drawn in very quickly. It is extremely interesting. And the second book I started reading in the car on the way back from Virginia Beach. I had already finished my novel while we were relaxing on the beach. It was so interesting I asked her if I could read it after she finished since I only got it about halfway finished on the trip home.

I usually read more for entertainment value (JD Robb, Laurell K Hamilton, Stephen King, etc) than to learn anything, but both of these books have taught me that sometimes nonfiction can be as much fun as fiction. It's funny that I am broadening my horizons at my age! I thought you couldn't teach an old dog new tricks.

Ok ... it was a little more than 24 hours... Sorry! I went to a concert tonight. (Seoul International Music Festival - amazing)... just got home.

So here's what I'm thinking... If we could choose a book we can get for free off the internet it would make my world way simpler. I will set up a group on facebook or on gmail (whatever y'all want) and then we read by a certain date... and discuss for a week via a thread - like this one.

What do you think?

I need to add this disclaimer for the book club:

I am not able to get ahold of new books easily or for a reasonable price. That is why I'm suggesting using the books that are online. If that means folks aren't able or interested in being a part of this, I understand. If y'all are reading and enjoying, that's the crux of the matter! (Sometimes I even read cookbooks!) (ok, and dictionaries) (and cereal boxes ) I'm a nerd.

I do have some books I can get here, and I can *get* books... it just takes time and they are REALLY expensive. Sooooooooo... if you're still cool with this idea, bring it on...

By the way, I wouldn't be opposed to being convinced to get one of those kindle things or whatever to download books. I just don't know enough about them.

Sunny - make sure you do your homework on what kind of digital reader you want. From MY understanding - the Kindle works on the 3G network. Which is fine is you happen to be somewhere that has a 3G network. I have a Sony digital reader - it is much much smaller than the Kindle - smaller than a paperback. Of course, you might want to wait as the technology is advancing rapidly and within 1 or 2 years they should have a reader out (I'm thinking Toshiba) that has a colour display for magazine and graphic novels. They are fairly expensive but I managed to get mine free from Airmiles.

As for books, I just finished a style of book I have never encountered before ..... a Christian romance. NO sex. No lustful thoughts. Frequent references to God and various Bible passges. I liked it :)

That's cause you're a weirdo.

I've actually read one or two of them. (Many years ago). The women in them were stupid and helpless.... kind of turned me off to them.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the cost and such. Thinks are really different here. It is incredibly wired here! Also, I don't want to get something here and not be able to use it when I travel or go home.

Anyhoo... I'll be back in the next couple of days. Tomorrow is a busy day at work, but Thursday is pretty free... I'll see what I can come up with by then. And no, the package of books isn't here yet. I checked today.
