I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you got some rest eventually.

They are costing far more than say 10 clerical officers put together. Do the maths and Youll see Im right. One chief executive say 1 million dollars, 10 clerical officers, 20,000 each.  I know what would I do and it would be first of all to cut the chief executive's salary in half. And then employ much needed staff.

Geez, you really don't get this at all, kevvie. Does the phrase "apples and oranges" mean anything to you?
quote:

And stop this nonsense about skills. You dont need any skills to answer a phone or take messages.. All your friends could do that.

I will assume you are serious and simply call bullshit here. "Phone answerer and message taker, no skills required" is not a job description in any company that I know of. That said, reception and customer service is. Have you ever worked in customer service, kevvie? Let me clue you in... it sucks, is never easy, and hella requires skills in handling both stupid and angry people in such a way that they come away in a positive frame of mind toward one's company. If you think that is easy, or doesn't require skills, then you obviously haven't been there.
quote:

They are crying out for a job. If you are in a position you are morally obligated to hire them
If you dont , then I dont know how you sleep at night

Again, bullshit. 'Morally obligated' to hire someone unqualified for the job? Oh hell fuck no.
Let's just turn it around, kev. If you worked for a small business, say 5 employees- how would you like having to do not only your own full time job, but also be required by your employer to cover for an unqualified fellow employee at no extra compensation, simply to keep the business from going under? Welcome to my world, as I have to do this every day.

As someone who answers the phone on a daily basis in my job. I can tell you there is nothing to it. If I can anyone can do it. And I can do it. And am doing so well that my boss is thinking of giving me a paid job at the end of the summer. Skills? Such nonsense. Its just clap trapped nonsense that employers come out with when they cannot think of a reason, a genuine reason why they did not hire someone. Hmm What will I say to this candidate when he/she asks me why he/she was not selected for the job? I know I ll tell them they dont have the skills for the job. Why? Because its a vogue expression that I can get away with it and after all arent skills all the rage. Such moronic nonsense. What do I think of people who think that it is a skill to answer the phone. I think they need their head examined. It s just another excuse by a n employer not to hire someone. An employer who probably has no more any skills him/herself than the man in the moon. It just shows how dumb employers really are. And then they wail about not making profits about going under about not being able to get staff. Who exactly are the potential staff? The unemployed . But then dimwits cant see this. And Im sorry but most employers are dimwits

Well then fire the unqualified employee. If an employee does not have a brain and cannot think on his /her feet he should not be in a job. Thankfully I at last can think on my feet and anticipate situations and deal with situations interpersonally. And yes customer service is not easy but it is a lot easier than say construction.  And taking customer service calls each day in my work experience I can tell you at times it is not easy but in no way is it rocket science. I can do it backwards and I had no experience of it coming in six months ago, never answered the phone for an employer in my life, had no confidence etc, But now I do and I ve discovered its not that difficult

So...an employer should hire anyone that wants a job despite their lack of skills and/or qualifications?

I seriously doubt that just anyone could take a message in my office Kevin, and that doubt has been proven time and again.

And I am morally obligated to no more than three dozen beings on this planet thank you, and over half of them are quadrapeds.

In the absence of such obligation I should sleep better at night methinks. As it is, it is no stretch to say that the 60 or so hours work I do each week makes the difference between their security and their destitution - and I am not going to risk their well being by taking on all and sundry to this particular lifeboat.

You might think such discernment is harsh - well harsh is the world's middle name. You need to understand that its you vs the rest of the world Kevin and aint no one gonna help you but you.

I would if I could, but said employee is a 'friend' of my employer... you know, one of those unskilled folks who was 'crying out' for a job in your post to LadyEllen? My employer felt 'morally obligated' to give him one, and fucked me over in the process. But it's all good, as my boss can now sleep at night, knowing that he has fulfilled his obligation to give the braindead and clueless a job.

Funny how uppity you have gotten all of a sudden, though.

Could I somehow get you to either adopt me or at least beat that particular lesson into my boss, LadyE?

Yep - although thanks to Kevin's wise advice I shall have to withdraw the offer and also sack everyone who works for me so I can take on twice as many people at minimum wage in order to fulfil my moral obligation to the world at large.

Well im only giving you my experience. Six months ago I had no job no nothing. On the strength of one five minute chance conversation I was given a chance at work experience. No references no nothing to back my case up. I have since been told that I am doing a good job and all going well will be given a paid position at the end of the Summer. My experience proves that you have to take a chance on raw recruits. Yeah some of them will prove to be disastrous but others like fine vintages will get better with experience and work place exposure. Bottom line if you dont give someone an opportunity you will never know and your business will ultimately stagnate as people move on to better things and other companies and are not replaced because of the dreaded what if they make a muck of the business fear. So what if they do? Get rid, no damage done. But you have got to speculate to accumulate ever heard that one

Well thats a very unfortunate situation. But there must be something you can do. A disciplinary hearing. A written warning. Verbal warnings. With all that evidence surely your boss will do the decent thing and dismiss unsatisfactory employee. Have you tried that

There s nothing wrong with being a person who has convictions of his own validity or of her own validity. Sadly there are too few of them in this world and none have powers. Thats why whistleblowers who have lifted the lid on corporate corruption have been sacked
totally wrong but sadly true

It really doesn't matter what anyone says to you. You don't take well to other points of view, you argue with everyone. The world, contrary to your belief, does NOT revolve around you. No one has to make special accomodations because you think they should. Everything always comes back to how you've been treated and how it's such a big bad world out there for poor wittle you.

Well guess what? Not going to happen. Business owners are there to make money. Not bleed it out because you think they should hire *you*. You have a sense of entitlement that is totally blown out of proportion. It's evident to everyone but you. Get a clue.

Kevin, meet brick wall.

I know that. But nor should it revolve around employing people at the top paying them top dollar and gaining no return. Where is the value for money in the last twelve to eighteen months of paying CEOs 2-3 million dollars yearly? And hearing the arrogant twats brag about the fact as one did that he was earning under two million as if it was a penance. Thats what gets ordinary works angry. Seeing their taxes paying for these twats who dont have a clue and are a drain on companies.  Bottom line , the entry level workers produce the most efficiency for companies. Top guys sit on their asses and do nothing and take top dollar. Where are their targets. Why are they not producing. Why should not they be fired. Why are ordinary workers like yourself paying for twats who are not delivering? And thats the reality . We are all getting screwed because the people are at the top are incompetent would be fired if they were anyone else and are not delivering. And if you ever become unemployed , I hope not, You will be in full agreement with me. Even workers who are employed are taking salary cuts because of the crass stupidity of their bosses. Where is the fairness in that. Its not about me . It about whats right for society. And whats right for society is to pay the top people less, hire more staff,  ligthen the work load on existing staff, bring in much needed tax revenue and get our economies going again. There is simply no justification for ignoring the needs of the low paid and unemployed and letting the top guys and girls get off scott free. They should pay their way. If they paid their fair share in taxes, the ordinary worker would not have be screwed.  What about a levy of 20% on an income of $300,000 dollars that is nothing to them. Its a drop in the ocean. They can well afford to pay it.  But it would do wonders for our collective national finances and it would mean we would not have to screw the low paid. But as always it is the lowest paid that gets screwed. And you as an ordinary worker I would have thought would have sympathy to that view. A receptionist does not get paid that well. Why should you suffer salary reductions while your bosses mess up everything and get away with it

And as for bringing in tax revenue. Bullshit. Im not on the dole nor do I want to be. Do you think I wouldnt bring in extra tax revenue if I was paid $300,000 to mess up the economy? Lets face it thats what the CEO S of banks have done.  They are definitely not delivering. If they were milllions would not be out of work

And obviously you are going to pay extra tax if you are earning a huge salary. It s called your societal obligation. No thanks to them. Its the law.  But the fact of the matter is the highest paid are not paying the highest taxes. The poor are being screwed the most relative to what they are earning. Thats why I loved this story about a person grossly over paid being fired. Because its about time someone felt the pain the low paid and poor feel. About time and about right
