Aneirin -> Is it because he's black ? (5/4/2010 9:35:46 PM)

I am just wondering here why it is people just seem to have it in for Barak Obama and I just have to ask, does the fact that he is black have anything to do with it ?

Now fair enough he might not be getting a handle on the things he said he would do in his election campaign, but of politicians who does, and if he does intend to come up with the goods so to speak who says he won't . Politics is a messy business, and for what he intends, it might not yet be prudent to act and anyway given the numpte you had in last, from what I understand there is a fair amount of mess to sort through first. People should remember Rome was not built in a day, so is it fair to be patient and give the guy a chance ?

Or is it you want results now, if so, what president have you had that has been able to move so fast to satisfy everyone in one go. But I hear of a large number of people who would like to see Obama dead, I just have to ask why that is, has his skin colour got anything to do with it, if that is so, then what is the point of the US sending troops abroad to sort out militant types when you have them in your own country, people who like to kill and destroy because of nothing more than skin colour.

But say the president of the United States was not Obama, say the president was in fact a woman, would the populace be happy with that and leave the president to get on with things, or would a woman receive a similar amount of shit given that like it or not, we still live in a patriachal society, a society where even despite such words of equality, women still do not have the same chances as men in life, particularly the work place, careers and such unless they sell out and adopt male ways of working.

You got me. It's because he's black.

Same reason I didn't like Clinton or Carter. Because they were black.

You nailed it.

For some, undoubtedly, but I'd wager that they were bigots long before Obama got elected.
That said, "people" have had it in for pretty much every president, which simply means that Obama is no different. I remember when Bush was elected, and about 2 months later people were after him because whatever had their panties in a wad hadn't been fixed. LOL

Because he's black.

Obama election spurs race crimes around country

Cross burnings. Schoolchildren chanting "Assassinate Obama." Black figures hung from nooses. Racial epithets scrawled on homes and cars.

Incidents around the country referring to President-elect Barack Obama are dampening the postelection glow of racial progress and harmony, highlighting the stubborn racism that remains in America.

From California to Maine, police have documented a range of alleged crimes, from vandalism and vague threats to at least one physical attack. Insults and taunts have been delivered by adults, college students and second-graders.

There have been "hundreds" of incidents since the election, many more than usual, said Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate crimes.

One was in Snellville, Ga., where Denene Millner said a boy on the school bus told her 9-year-old daughter the day after the election: "I hope Obama gets assassinated." That night, someone trashed her sister-in-law's front lawn, mangled the Obama lawn signs, and left two pizza boxes filled with human feces outside the front door, Millner said.

So what's this shit Aneirin??? We're all supposed to line up and deny that we're just a bunch of racists???

Fuck you! I don't care if he's purple. I disagree with his governing philosophies, and worry about his lack of experience with power.

popeye1250 -> RE: Is it because he's black ? (5/4/2010 11:13:19 PM)

Aneirin, he's HALF black, the other half is white.
And I don't like any president who can't or won't secure our border with Mexico or enforce our immigration laws.
If he did those two things he'd get my vote in 2012. That is going to be a continuing problem for him.
Clinton was a lawyer too and we saw how that worked out didn't we?
I'd like to see a "man or woman of the people" become president.

Count up the number of Sarah Palin and GWB threads here. Neither of them are even still in office, yet people make threads about them just to trash them. It's not because he's black, it's because political discussions get ugly.

Oh and he just made private health insurance mandatory for everyone. Nobody's really happy with that shit. One side wants single payer, the other side wants no government interference.

Then again, I don't want Obama dead, so maybe I'm not your target audience for this question.

willowspirit -> RE: Is it because he's black ? (5/5/2010 12:17:09 AM)

I volunteered at an inner-city Minneapolis special high school where ALL the students were African American. Even the staff referred to me as a "ghost" (that's how few white people worked there!)
Anyway, those kids did NOT consider Barack Obama to be "Black".

The discussion in the class went like this....

"Everyone says he's the first Black President."
"Obama isn't Black. He wasn't even raised here!"
"That [N-word] ain't of us. He's no brother."
"Okay, so are you saying that his skin isn't dark enough ?" their teacher asked.
"There's no slavery in him, wha'd he know about anything!"
"Skin color isn't enough to make anyone Black"
"Yeah, maybe, but he's the closest we'll ever get," said one discouraged 16 year old boy.

Personally, I think these kids are brighter than an African American talk show hostess, the media, and the general U.S. electorate combined.

Obama was elected by droves of white college kids who wanted to be "part of history" -- kids who are not likely to turn out and vote in the next election.

I think WyldHeart got it right. The honeymoon period is over, just like with any other president before him.

LadyEllen -> RE: Is it because he's black ? (5/5/2010 3:10:25 AM)

Its because he's Jewish.

Must be

MC4Misfit -> RE: Is it because he's black ? (5/5/2010 3:30:44 AM)

People being what they are, there isn't anyone one reason why people are so anti-Obama.  Everyone has their own reason.  Yes, for some it's black, for some it's his policies, for some it's just that he's part of the government, etc. etc. etc.  I agree with WyldHrt that ever President faces this.  One example that hasn't been mentioned was the attempt to impeach Clinton for having an affair...like he's the only President to have done that.

Speaking for myself, his race is a non-issue for me...it's his policies that bother me.  He seems intent on driving this country in bankruptcy.  His answer to almost everything seems to be to throw large sums of money at it.  A lot of that money so far has come from loans from China...loans that will have to be paid back AFTER he leaves office.  I really worry about the financial future of this country.

Not to be nitpicky....but Bush didnt get elected. The Supreme Court "Confirmed" the results for us...........coup de etat.

VioletGray -> RE: Is it because he's black ? (5/5/2010 4:57:18 AM)

Does Obama's race factor into the opposition he's been getting?

Of COURSE!

Being a republican doesn't make you a racist.  Being against his policies doesn't make you a racist. A lot of the criticisms aimed at Obama are fair points, by people who disagree with the directions his policies on their own merits (or lack thereof).

But some the absolute outrage that you're seeing has a racial basis.   The Tea Parties are upset about taxes? Where were they when George Bush Sr. was around?  Remember the whole "Read My Lips" thing? Sure people were pissed and he was voted out, but there was no movement like this.

The issue of his race factoring into politics is much more complex than "Well obviously, these guys must hate blacks."  Some of them do. But for many of them, it's not because he's black, It's just that his race adds gasoline to the already existing ire he gets for being a liberal.  There are many people who would not consider themselves racist, but for whom Obama's race contribute to his "otherness."  A black man as president is a direction that we've never gone before, and some people don't like going in directions we've never gone before, because there's uncertainty there.

Some examples of this can be extreme.  Do you know why some people are obsessed with where he was born? Why people are showing up to rallies with AK47's and Guns with laser sights on them? Because there are some people who see his presidency as an INVASION.

Compound this with the fact he has political opponents that are certainly not above exploiting this fear other "otherness" for their own gain.  Remember the whole Barack "Hussein" Obama thing? Remember the email sent out by that politician with the White House lawn turned into a watermelon patch?  I truly believe that there are opponents of his who probably don't give a damn that he's black, but are still willing to use it for their own political agendas.

Just to recap, being conservative and opposed to him does not equal racist.

But to suggest that race isn't a contributing factor, is at the very least, to deceive yourself.

So you didn't like Reagan , Bush I or II either? The border certainly wasn't secure then either

Moonhead -> RE: Is it because he's black ? (5/5/2010 5:02:18 AM)

A man or woman of the people? Like, say, Jimmy Carter?

pyroaquatic -> RE: Is it because he's black ? (5/5/2010 5:13:12 AM)

You must realize skin color has nothing to do with shifting blame on anyone other than themselves.

I don't think it would have mattered who won the presidential election. We still would be in some deep 'shit'.

Louve00 -> RE: Is it because he's black ? (5/5/2010 5:16:00 AM)

It has always been my thought that to 'us fellow Americans' it can indeed be because he is black.  We made a huge stride in seeing past color during the elections cuz the country was so screwed up, but now that its back to politics as usual and they see Obama is not our "messiah" I think color does play a part for some because some have always been backwards like that, but its not the case for all.  As for the politicians...I think they would love nothing more than to smear a democrat with his race.  And if they can get Americans to buy into that, then it suits their purpose very well. And again, IMO, when you look at a person who is half black and half anything else, the immediate thought is he is black.  All that "it just takes one drop of black blood mentality" and all.  It's not until you're informed that you know...or will even consider anything else.

Ask a redneck (neonazi, KKK member, et al) what a mixed person is if they are mixed with black and you might see who considers who black.

DarkSteven -> RE: Is it because he's black ? (5/5/2010 5:26:52 AM)

1. He's what George Bush was not.  The neocons got used to thinking that their way was the status quo during eight years of W.  Obama's policies (at least on paper) are a change from W, and not a slight one either.  So they're up in arms.  I suspect that Clinton would have engendered a lot more of this during his eight years if Reagan had not been followed by Bush I as a buffer.

2. The conservative yellers and screamers perfected their art under Clinton.  They're much better at it now, and are more effectively vocal.

3. W somehow avoided getting connected with the bailout in the minds of many but Obama hasn't.  I don't know why.  Maybe because the bailout happened after W had established his persona...

4. Yes, there are some who hate him because of his race.  I doubt that there are many.

I'd suspect that 4 is more of a factor than people on here like to admit, sadly. Depressing, but there it is. You're not going to get very far arguing that there isn't a racial aspect to all of this "birther" drivel, or the muslim allegations that keep lingering like a far in a lift however often they get debunked, after all.

Mandatory in name only. The enforcement mechanism is weak to non-existent.
