I hadn't read your post yet...I was finding other instances of this story popping up on the net. More than one of the boys is at least "half Mexican" and at least two of them were found at school on Thursday wearing their American flag shirts again.

tazzygirl -> RE: American students sent home for wearing American flags (5/7/2010 9:32:06 AM)

Is there something wrong with wearing the flag on a t=shirt?

slavekal -> RE: American students sent home for wearing American flags (5/7/2010 9:34:16 AM)

I hate political correctness.  The left are censors the same as the right.  Just for different reasons.  I hope they sue.

Don't schools tho have a dress code?

Yes, however I am willing to bet that, "We have a zero tolerance policy for wearing the American flag on May 5th," is not in there.

BoiJen -> RE: American students sent home for wearing American flags (5/7/2010 9:41:22 AM)

This school's dress code was only violated by the bandannas and the students that were wearing ones, took them off. They refused to take off their shirts. I'm with slaveKal, I hope they sue the school in an effort to get the principle and vice principle fired for this crap.

While I wish that, if individuals are going to share their American patriotism in the United States that they display the flag properly (a patch over the left breast pocket or high on the left sleeve, just under the shoulder seam) of a solid color, no decorative, button up shirt, I don't have any overwhelming need to scream at the kids for "disrespecting my flag". If it were a day in which I found myself talking to any of these kids, I might take the opportunity to inform them of proper display of the flag but I wouldn't badger them.

I think a t-shirt is the least of our worries.

BoiJen -> RE: American students sent home for wearing American flags (5/7/2010 10:20:21 AM)

The t-shirt isn't what bothers me about this situation.

tazzygirl -> RE: American students sent home for wearing American flags (5/7/2010 10:31:22 AM)

What bothers me is that, according to wiki, and it could be false information, that Cinco de Mayo is not celebrated all over mexico, but only in a small part. So why is this holiday so revered in the US? Why were these students sent home?

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a holiday held on May 5 that commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza SeguĂn.[2][3] It is celebrated primarily in the state of Puebla and in the United States.[4][5][6][7] While Cinco de Mayo sees limited significance and celebration nationwide in Mexico, the date is observed nationwide in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.[8] Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day,[9] the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.[10]

Why is this day so improtant in the US besides it being another excuse to drink?

As I said Tazzy...the Principal overreacted...that still doesn't make these young men hero's in my view.IMO they were wearing the t-shirts in an act of provocation and defiance.
Now whether or not the wearing of the American flag should or should not have been proscribed on this or any other day is another subject.....I just don't like the trend where we challenge authority at every turn....especially as it applies to the school systems....School administrators have a tough enough time keeping the lid on what at times are explosive mixtures of culture and identity within given schools....celebrating a few yahoos who decide to push buttons and stretch envelopes at that alter of making a point just doesn't seem right to me.
Others apparently feel differently....what can I say, everyone has their own opinion.....mine is the schools of late have become violent enough ...second guessing administrators just trying to keep the lid on things seems counter-productive.

tazzygirl -> RE: American students sent home for wearing American flags (5/7/2010 11:26:32 AM)

No one said they should be celebrated. However, they are americans, on american soil, wearing an american flag, being told that wearing so is direspectful to the heritage of another country.

I have huge issues with that.

The problem with this view point is that there is no rule or code or stated understanding that it is against the school's policy to wear American flag-type gear. To me, the people defying real authority is the school that bowed to the perceived racial pressure and took the American flag down outside of the school and put the Mexican flag up. You want to have a problem with people not respecting authority...don't get mad at the kids who weren't breaking any rules, get mad at the "authorities" that were imposing unjust and arbitrary rules without warning.

Perhaps Mexican-American heritage and traditions are different to Mexican traditions? I'm guessing here-I'm English, I know next to nothing about either culture, but second/third generation British Asians aren't cookie-cutter identical to those born in Pakistan or India, for example-which is what you seem to be expecting to happen here.

This thread seems odd from where I'm sitting-if students in England did the same thing (used the Union Jack as a symbol of aggression) I suspect there would be eye-rolling and not much else-but few posters on this thread seem to be making a distinction between wearing a flag as a celebration and an affirmation of culture ('this is who we are'-good) and wearing the flag as a symbol of aggression ('this is who *you aren't*'-not so good).

I'm chalking it up to your much greater sense of patriotism-one of the reasons I'm pretty sure I'll never understand Americans in the generic.

So you believe it was sheer coincidence that had all of these flag wearers sitting together in the cafateria....lol.I've got a bridge for you...
And you don't see defiance when a vice principal asks them to turn the damm shirts inside out.....again I have a bridge for you.
It's all cool to have the knee jerk reaction"These are just kids wearing the American Flag"...and lose sight that these were probably kids looking to incite a reaction by wearing those t-shirts on this particular day.....well they got a reaction, and they have their news story....all cool.

Did you bother to read the part where a few of these kids returned to school the next day also wearing American-flag type stuff?

I think the people looking to get the knee jerk reaction are the principle and the vice principle for forcing a student body to celebrate a Mexican holiday in the United States. And if you don't think those administrators have an agenda...I have a bridge for you...

slvemike4u -> RE: American students sent home for wearing American flags (5/7/2010 12:21:30 PM)

What does their wearing the t-shirts the next day have to do with it.....You're kidding me right?
Show me that they wore those t-shirts every previous tuesday(or whatever day of the week it was)wearing it the next day means less than nothing.
Just another statement.....which is what wearing the t's on Cinco de Mayo was in the first place....and in the opinion of school officials a ....dangerous one.

slvemike4u -> RE: American students sent home for wearing American flags (5/7/2010 12:24:19 PM)

How the fuck is celebrating a Mexican cultural holiday in a school with a large percentage of Mexican students come under the heading of "forced"?
Keep your bridge...at this point, after reading some of your more recent posts....I don't think you could sell me water in a desert.

servantforuse -> RE: American students sent home for wearing American flags (5/7/2010 12:32:26 PM)

I'm wondering how many of the Mexican students at that school are here illegally ??

slvemike4u -> RE: American students sent home for wearing American flags (5/7/2010 1:28:24 PM)

Okay Servant....I'll bite...just what the fuck does that have to do with anything even remotely connected to this story?
The dateline was not Arizona!

To clarify a couple of  points here, the article said that 40% of the students are Hispanic.  Not everyone who is Hispanic is Mexican.  We don't know what percentage of the student body is Mexican.  There are quite a few Hispanics who were born in the US and are proud of that fact.

Second point, everyone talks about what the principal did.  The article says that the principal has refused to comment.  He's ducking out on this issue...for reasons we can only guess at.  We're talking about the actions of the vice principal here. We do know that the school board is not backing the actions of the vice principal...for whatever you want to make of that.

I stand by my opinion that there's nothing wrong with wearing the American flag in America.  If this goes on, where do we stop?  Do  we have to stop celebrating Independence Day lest we offend the British?  Do we need to worry about offending the French on Bastille Day?  The citizens of Uruguay on Dia de la Independencia?  Before long we could probably find that every day on the calendar would offend someone.
