Status: offline 		I disagree. How do we need more people the "Work" part of the Workforce is disappearing? Part of the problem began with the outsourcing of jobs. Who ever though that a time would come when you need a law to force American companies to hire American Workers? But we do. We should not be taking better care of people who migrate here than our own people.

And thats another way to look at it. 


It is as large a question about National Security as anything else. We are an aging population. If we needed to meet a global challenge at this time that would require all able bodies for war and another similar group of able bodies to build that machinery. Could we do it? Today maybe, 20 years from now without an influx of able bodies? I am not so sure.

I wouldn't disagree. But any of the immigration that we need is going to be a messy thing that We as born Americans aren't going to jump up and down and love. Consider when your Grandfather came and the last great influxes of the late 1900's. There were riots in many cities between groups and tensions with the Born Americans of that age.

I guess I worry that there seems to be such a movement afoot to hold onto what is percieved is our Founding Fathers values or intentions. It is a futile struggle. This country will change and has changed with all these years. The best we can do is accept and work with the framework that they laid down and try to do the best we can as a Nation. At some point Spanish will be the legal language. I think we better get used to it

I understand exactly what you are saying.  One thing I learned working within the Medicare industry is as the population ages by around 2015 there are going to be at least 4 Medicare recipients to every one taxpayer.  It cannot work and is doomed to failure.  We will need more taxpayers if we are going to support just the programs we have and lets not forget the folks who want to add even more people to Medicare.

But in order to have taxpayers, we need something other than workers...we need jobs.  I honestly believe no one would be getting overly upset about the lawbreakers breaking and entering the country if there was 1% unemployment.  The argument that people need to break into our country illegally because otherwise no one would pick lettuce is simply a lie.   We can fluxuate the quotas according to need.  But we need to have jobs first.

Status: offline 		I don't disagree with you or MsAlisede on the jobs front. I am hopeful that we are learning painful lessons right now and the that American consumer will start demanding quality products made to the strict specifications that we have made for products currently made here. We also need politicians with courage to stand up to the Chinese and demand that the Yuan be floated just as other major currencies are against the dollar. Those two items would send production back to the US very quickly.

Your thinking is dead on. In the next 20 years we will need either an influx of youth, or an epidemic that will prune down Americans over 65 years old.

It is indeed, as about apprx. 4 years ago at a radio debate they said that in Germany in 10 or 20 years time (at that time) girls will be in high demand in Germany on the job front, as they are more likely to do the work in nursing homes and hospitals...and that will simply be one area where staff will be needed big time with the ageing population growing.

"Jobs" as we understand them will soon be obsolete.

I recommend "The End of Work" to the naysayers. Way ahead of its time.

The Know Nothing movement was a nativist American political movement of the 1840s and 1850s. It was empowered by popular fears that the country was being overwhelmed by German and Irish Catholic immigrants, who were often regarded as hostile to Anglo-Saxon values and controlled by the Pope in Rome. Mainly active from 1854 to 1856, it strove to curb immigration and naturalization, though its efforts met with little success. Membership was limited to Protestant males of British lineage over the age of twenty-one. There were few prominent leaders, and the largely middle-class and entirely Protestant membership fragmented over the issue of slavery. Most ended up joining the Republican Party by the time of the 1860 presidential election.[1][2]

The movement originated in New York in 1843 as the American Republican Party. It spread to other states as the Native American Party and became a national party in 1845. In 1855 it renamed itself the American Party.[3] The origin of the "Know Nothing" term was in the semi-secret organization of the party. When a member was asked about its activities, he was supposed to reply, "I know nothing."[4]

The platform of the American Party called for, among other things:[citation needed]
Severe limits on immigration, especially from Catholic countries.
Restricting political office to native-born Americans of English and/or Scottish lineage and Protestant persuasion.
Mandating a wait of 21 years before an immigrant could gain citizenship.
Restricting public school teacher positions to Protestants.
Mandating daily Bible readings in public schools.
Restricting the sale of liquor.
Restricting the use of languages other than English.

dont need jobs, just birth certificates

ever see how they badger people who do not want a BC for their kid?

The BC is a Bond that they float and gives them the authority to do so.

The reason often given is that legal immigration is a ten year process with endless and repeated paper-work due to gross inefficiency at our foreign embassies. Just what I heard.

Status: offline 		Yep, as I read it, Uncle Abraham held his nose and the American Party was absorbed by the Republican Party late 1850s. Evidently, it is still a vibrant wing of the Grand Ol Party but now called the Tea Party Movement

Sorry for your problems T.

However, immigrants are very entreprenuerial. Not only do they create businesses but increase demand for goods and services. I say this as a child of the great immigration from southern Italy and as a witness to the immigration of Latinos into South Florida.
