I'm kind of curious on how the Mods as well as the folks who are on the boards see this subject.  I get the 'no hi-jack' premise and all that.  Still, I wonder at the same time about the supposed 'drift'.

Better yet, how much drift is too much drift?

Let's say somebody starts a thread about blueberry pie.  (I'm reaching here because I don't want to point to any thread in particular.)  By response four, somebody chimes in that they like blueberry pie, but they really do prefer apple.  Response number eight comes in, quotes response number four and says that they love apple pie too, especially with vanilla ice cream.  This brings people talking about ice cream of all flavors and what other kinds of deserts they like.  Point being, they aren't especially talking about blueberry pie anymore, but they've broadened the subject and it's become a discussion.

So, I guess what I'm asking here is, what is really considered too much drift and if an associated topic comes up through a thread, can it still be considered on topic?

If a thread is strong and well atteneded and derailment is ignored by the posters.

If the thread is weak and silly, everyone jumps on the derailment.

That is how I have seen it...



and I fucking swore I would stop this serious crap.

Now I must go derail a thread... I hope you are happy Pact...it is your fault!

Current mood of the group can also- sway it... as well as ongoing dialogues- tiffs- any number of oddities.

For instance- the massive snow in - alot of it went on there- but people more less wanted to let off stress.

Status: offline 		Well I guess it depends on what the derailment is. If it's a group of people laughing, I join in. Anyone can get it back on track by resuming the conversation. If it's someone coming in to a debated topic and derailing with a personal ax to grind, I think it's destructive (and yes I know I have done it). However, if the thread is complete blithering garbage and someone is way the hell out in left field. I think it's open to debate what the hell derailment might possibly be.

(turning the corner and perhaps derailing a bit here, but it is in the same ballpark).

Also, a very serious thread, well thought out with pretty strong ide as will often be an exceedingly short thread. A number of times I've seen these kinds of threads end on page 2 or 3. Often the derailment comes in when emotions come into play or when one twue wayism show up. That disappoints me, but it is the nature of things.

I see nothing wrong with thread drift (even thread hijacks). It is the nature of conversations. Often two or three other fairly strong topics will come out of one via thread drift. I rather enjoy the juggling that entails.

Thread hijacks in the guise of "hey how you been, where you been" are often the ones that pop in and pop out and are ignored by the rest of folks.

How much is too much? When a thread becomes personal attacks it is too much drift in my opinion.

Was the OP talking about how to make blueberry pie and asking for something like how to get the crust just the right mix of tender and flakey or good recipies for diabetics?  If so, then the comments about apple pie and ice cream would qualify as too much thread drift.  Maybe even a thread hijack, because the OP asked for specific answers related to blueberry pie.  Comments about other types of desert won't help the OP find the information xie wants.   
 
But if the OP is just about the enjoyment of pie, specifically blueberry, then the drift to other types of pie, ice cream with pie, and other deserts would be fine.  The devil is in the details.

Status: offline 		When talking or listening, we don’t have to be conscious of drifting because it happens very naturally, but we make ourselves think about it because we feel like it’s disrespectful. In the context of social norms, it MAY in fact be, but is that logical? If both parties recognized the quality or casualness or the silence within conversation fully,or the drift weather subtle or abrupt in subject change, disrespect would play no part. We would simply be. IMO conversations often drift because of how we relate as individuals or even our own individual communication styles.
